a) Per esprimere un azione abituale al passato (=used to)

b)Per esprimere un’azione che si sta svolgendo al passato
Ieri a quest’ora stavo mangiando un panino
(At this time yesterday I was eating a sandwich)
c) Per esprimere due azioni simultanee
Mentre lavavo I piatti, I bambini dormivano
(The children were sleeping while I was washing the dishes)
L’imperfetto si usa
d) Per descrivere condizioni e stati di esistenza (fisica, mentale
e emotiva) al passato, incluso il tempo, il tempo atmosferico,
l’età.
Quan’ero bambina, avevo I capelli ricci
(When I was a child, I had curly hair)
Quando pioveva e faceva freddo, nessuno aveva voglia di giocare
fuori.
(When it was raining and cold, nobody felt like playing outside)
Tutti sapevano che Patrizia era innamorata di Lorenzo
(Everybody knew that Patrizia was in love with Lorenzo)

e) Per indicare da quanto tempo si faceva qualcosa
Da quanto tempo lavoravi?
(How long had you been working)
Lavoravo da due mesi
(I had been working for two months?
f) Per indicare un’azione in corso che viene interrotta da un’altra
azione.
Luigi e’ arrivato mentre guardavo la televisione.
L’imperfetto si usa
e) Con “essere” e “avere e converbi che esprimono emozioni
stati mentali (amare, credere, desiderare, pensare, potere,
ricordare, sapere, sperare,volere, ecc.
Erano stanchi perche’ avevano troppo lavoro.
(They were tired because they had oo much work)
Giovanni amava Laura e sperava di sposarla.
(Giovanni loved Laura and was hoping to marry her)
f) Per specificare l’ora, date o stagioni
Erano le 10 quando le ho telefonato.
(It was 10 o’clock when I called her)
L’imperfetto vs. il passato prossimo
Il passato prossimo è un tempo narrativo usato per parlare di una
Specifica azione completata in passato. L’azione può essere durata
Erano stanchi perche’ avevano troppo lavoro.
(They were tired because they had oo much work)
Giovanni amava Laura e sperava di sposarla.
(Giovanni loved Laura and was hoping to marry her)
f) Per specificare l’ora, date o stagioni
