7 SEPTEMBER 2014
RESPONSORIAL PSALM
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
O that today you would listen to his voice!
Harden not your hearts.
Alleluia, alleluia!
God was in Christ,
to reconcile the world to himself;
and the Good News of reconciliation he has
entrusted to us.
Alleluia!
Come, ring out our joy to the Lord;
hail the rock who saves us.
Let us come before him, giving thanks,
with songs let us hail the Lord.
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II
Come in; let us bow and bend low;
let us kneel before the God who made us
for he is our God and we
the people who belong to his pasture,
the flock that is led by his hand.
O that today you would listen to his voice!
‘Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
as on that day at Massah in the desert
when your fathers put me to the test;
when they tried me, though they saw my work.’

WHERE TWO OR THREE ARE GATHERED
Jesus states directly, ‘I shall be there.’ With no
Temple or priest or special rituals, all that is
needed for Jesus’ presence is two. This saying of
Jesus is very similar to a rabbinic saying
attributed to a Jewish rabbi in the second
century CE who taught, ‘When two sit and there
are between them the words of the Torah, the
divine presence (Shekinah) rests upon them.’
The passage gives us a small
glimpse into the life of one
early Christian community.
Obviously, it was a
community that had its
difficulties and struggles,
hence Matthew’s need to
offer a way of handling
disagreements within the community. If this
community is predominantly Jewish as most
commentators believe, then it is a community
used to praying when a group of ten men
gathered. Now, within a smaller Christian
community it may be more difficult to gather
such a group so Matthew offers further pastoral
advice that Jesus is present when only a small
number gather – even just two people. As we
glimpse some of the struggles within Matthew’s
community this may provide a source of
encouragement for our own communities as we
face the difficulties of being Church in our time.
And, above all, remember Jesus’ promise – he is
Emmanuel, God with us – even when it might
seem God is distant. Mary Coloe
FATHERS’ DAY
Happy Fathers’ Day to all the fathers in our
parish community. We pray that
God may bless and guide you in
your very special vocation. We
pray for our own fathers, living
or deceased. We pray in thanks
for the goodness we have
received from our fathers.
FATHERS’ DAY APPEAL
This weekend there will be the Annual collection
for the Priests’ Retirement Foundation – a
foundation that provides ongoing
accommodation and support for the retired
priests of the Melbourne Archdiocese. Priests
generally retire at 75 years of age and there are
presently 87 retired priests. The Retirement
Foundation meets their needs. There will be an
average of 6 retirements per year for the next
six years. Last financial year it cost the
Archdiocese 3 million dollars to care for these
retired priests. As well as today’s collection,
12.5% of our presbytery collection goes to the
Retirement Foundation.
FIRST SUNDAY CUPPA TODAY
After the 10.30am Mass today there will be a
cuppa in the St Ambrose’s Community
Centre. Come along and enjoy tea,
coffee, cake and biscuits – as well as
each other’s company. All welcome!
FR MICHAEL ON RETREAT THIS WEEK
Fr Michael will be making his annual retreat at
the Cistercian Abbey in Tarrawarra this week.
We wish him a prayerful and peaceful time there.
He will return to the parish on Friday afternoon.
WEEKDAY MASSES THIS WEEK
The times of weekday Masses for this week will
be:
• Our Lady’s 9.15am Tuesday and Wednesday
• St Ambrose’s 10.00am Thursday to Friday.
There will be no morning Mass next Saturday as
both Fr Michael and Fr Vinh will be attending the
ordinations at St Patrick’s Cathedral.
There will be Communion Services at St
Ambrose’s on Tuesday and Wednesday at
10.00am as well as at Our Lady’s on Thursday
9.15am and Friday at 9.00am.
FACING THE TRUTH
All parishioners are invited to a parish meeting,
on Tuesday 23 September from 7.30pm to
9.00pm in the Community Centre at St
Ambrose’s, to discuss the dark
area of criminal abuse of children
in the Catholic Church in
Australia. This will be an evening
of prayer and discussion. It will
also be an opportunity for all of us to express
how we are feeling personally, and as a
community, about the Church’s approach in the
past and present to victims and perpetrators.
WHAT’S IN A NAME?
With Our Lady’s and St Ambrose’s preparing to
take the step toward becoming one parish, we
need to consider an over-riding name that will be
used on our official correspondence/website, etc.
Of course each church will keep its own name –
Our Lady’s and St Ambrose’s. At the last PLT
meeting it was suggested we adopt the simple
name: The Catholic Parish of Brunswick and
Brunswick East. If you have any further
comments or suggestions about a name, please
see a member of the Parish Leadership Team
over the next couple of weeks.
MEALS IN SMALL GROUPS
It is almost time for our next
round of Meals in Small Groups.
This initiative provides an
opportunity for priests and
parishioners to come together in someone’s
home to share an evening meal and conversation
and, in this way, to get to know one another a
little better. If you have never attended one of
the meals, please think about this great
opportunity. The forthcoming dates will be:
• Saturday 18 October
• Saturday 1 November
• Saturday 8 November
PREFACE AND EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Just a reminder for those who use a missal to
pray the Mass. The Eucharistic Prayer for the
Mass is always indicated on the front of the
Sunday newsletter. This Prayer with its
associated Preface will also normally be prayed
throughout the coming week.

GIORNO DEL PAPÀ
Felice giorno del Papà a tutti i padri
nella nostra comunità parrocchiale.
Preghiamo che Dio possa benedire e
guidarvi nella vostra vocazione molto
speciale. Preghiamo per i nostri
padri, viventi o defunti.
Sacerdoti in generale vanno
sacerdoti in pensione. La Fondazione sacerdoti Pensionati
prende cura delle loro esigenze. Ci sarà una media di 6
pensionati all'anno per i prossimi sei anni. L’ultimo anno
Così come
Sant’Ambrogio. Vieni e gustare tè, caffè, torta
e biscotti – così come la reciproca compagnia. Tutti
Benvenuti!
P. MICHAEL IN RITIRO QUESTA SETTIMANA

Cistercense in Tarrawarra questa settimana. Gli
auguriamo momenti oranti e tranquilli.

in Australia.
esprimere come ci sentiamo personalmente e come
corrispondenza/sito ufficiale, ecc. Naturalmente ogni
parrocchia nelle prossime settimane.
PASTI IN PICCOLI GRUPPI
saranno:
• Sabato 18 Ottobre
• Sabato 1 Novembre
• Sabato 8 Novembre
