Sassari - Alghero 27-31 October 2014 Dear Colleagues and Friends, It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to Sardinia and to the 12th Conference of the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics. The conference will take place at Sassari and Alghero and we are here at the invitation of the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici per le province di Sassari e Nuoro (Ministero dei Beni, delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo). The conference would not have been possible without the support of the University of Sassari, The Getty Foundation and the University of Cyprus, as well as all the other local authorities and organisations whose logos feature on the back cover of this booklet. I extend to all of them my most sincere thanks and gratitude. For deciding on the theme of the conference, the Scientific Committee met and, as on previous occasions, discussed several topics related to mosaic conservation. One of the themes that has been cropping up for a number of years now is that of Cost – cost understood in its wider sense. For this reason we have decided to dedicate this 12th conference of the ICCM to ”Conservation and Presentation of Mosaics: At What Cost?”. The cost of conservation and presentation of mosaics is usually defied in financial terms. This may entail preventive measures such as maintenance, or remedial ones such as stabilisation. In fact, the act of conservation and presentation exacts many different costs, which may be beneficial or detrimental to mosaic heritage: t "FTUIFUJDDPTUTUISPVHIJOUFSWFOUJPOBQQFBSBODFBOEBVUIFOUJDJUZ t )VNBODPTUTPGNBOBHFNFOUUSBJOJOHBOETUBóOH t 4PDJPQPMJUJDBMDPTUTTVDIBTUIFJNQBDUPGFYDBWBUJPOEFWFMPQNFOU and tourism. Conservation decisions are heavily influenced by the financial resources available, requiring some degree of compromise, which may affect the display of mosaics and their original context, as well as the implementation of preventive conservation measures. What types of approaches mitigate 3 these compromises to reach ethical and sustainable solutions? What is the acceptable limit of such compromises? There are no exemplary models for costing mosaic conservation, particularly for mosaics in situ on archaeological sites, where monetary costs are often VOSFDPSEFE NBLJOH CVEHFUJOH BOE QMBOOJOH WFSZ EJóDVMU5IJT IBNQFST good site maintenance. The conference has invited presentations of the financial planning and execution of conservation and maintenance of mosaics on sites, in storage and in museums.
