Definizione
I pronomi relativi permettono di unire due frasi che hanno
un sostantivo in comune.
Il pronome relativo si riferisce a una cosa o persona già
citata nella frase precedente.
The woman lives next door.
The woman is a doctor.

is a doctor.
Come si forma
I pronomi relativi variano in base alla funzione del
sostantivo a cui si riferiscono secondo il seguente
schema:

Quando si usa -1
Per unire due frasi il cui soggetto è lo stesso
The film won an Oscar.
The film is French.

Quando si usa -2
Per unire due frasi collegate da un possessivo.
We’re playing against a team. Their shirts are
red.

We’re playing against a team whose shirts are
red.
Quando si usa -3
Per unire due frasi facendo riferimento al
complemento oggetto.
In questo caso si può omettere il pronome relativo.
I bought a car. It’s parked outside.

The car (that) I bought is parked outside.
Quando si usa -4
Per introdurre una subordinata che è
necessaria per identificare il sostantivo a cui si
riferisce (defining clause).
The person who helped me was
very kind.

Definisce quale persona.
Quando si usa -5
Per introdurre una subordinata, in genere tra
due virgole, senza la quale la frase mantiene
comunque senso compiuto (non-defining
clause).
Barbara, who likes animals
very much, wants
to be a vet.

la frase ha senso compiuto.
Altre forme
• Where: per indicare un luogo. Sostituisce in/at which:
The shop where (in which) he works is open on Sundays.
• When: per indicare quando. Sostituisce in/on which:
Spring is the season when flowers grow.
• Why: per indicare perché. Sostituisce for which:
We don’t know the reason why he decided to leave.
Per esercitarsi
Inserisci il pronome relativo nelle seguenti frasi. In alcuni
casi può essere omesso.
