FEBRUARY 19, 2012: SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Dear Friends in Christ,
Lent starts on Wednesday, February 22nd. You can
find our Ash Wednesday schedule in the bulletin.
Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation. It
is, however, a much-loved tradition to attend Mass,
or at least, to receive ashes to start this penitential
season.
Lent is a penitential season. It is divided into two
parts. The first part runs until the fifth Sunday of
Lent, traditionally called Passion Sunday. The first
four weeks emphasize the necessity of ongoing conversion in the Christian life. To this end, this season
proposes three means by which we can grow in holiness through expressions of love of God (prayer),
self (fasting and abstinence) and neighbor
(almsgiving).
Prayer – Every Friday we will remember the Passion of Lord through the devotion of the Stations of
the Cross. In addition, the pamphlet, The Busy Family’s Guide to Lent, is available for you to take home
and infuse your household with the spirit of Lent.
Finally, each of us should renew our commitment to
daily, personal prayer, or more frequent attendance
at Mass during the week. However much we are now
praying, we should increase the amount of time and
frequency of prayer. God will not fail to reward our
generosity.
Fasting & Abstinence – we must properly distinguish
between these two, related practices. (1) The law of fasting requires a Catholic from the 18th birthday (Canon 97)
to the 59th birthday (i.e. the beginning of the 60th year, a
year which will be completed on the 60th birthday) to
reduce the amount of food eaten from normal. The
Church defines this as one meal a day, and two smaller
meals which if added together would not exceed the main
meal in quantity. Such fasting is obligatory on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. The fast is broken by
eating between meals and by drinks, which could be considered food (milk shakes, but not milk). Alcoholic beverages do not break the fast; however, they seem to be contrary to the spirit of doing penance.
To be continued next week...
God bless you,
Father Elias
Cari amici in Cristo,
Quaresima inizia Mercoledì, 22 Febbraio. Potete
Via Crucis. Inoltre, l'opuscolo, The Busy Family’s
Guide to Lent, è a vostra disposizione per portare a
Dio Vi Benedica,
Padre Elias

BULLETIN REFLECTION
Forgiveness, too, is a gift from God. Freed from the
paralysis of sin, the man in today’s Gospel was
able to stand and give witness to the power of God.
How do I let sin cripple me? Am I a good steward
of the gift of God’s forgiveness?
In the Parish Hall
Once again volunteers are needed to help make this
feast a success. One of the themes of this year’s
Feast will be recognizing our Parishes 75 year anniversary. Anyone with questions comments or
suggestions can contact
