SUNDAY, MARCH 8, 2015: THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
Carissimi Parrocchiani di San Rocco
Dear Friends in Christ,
This Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm in the Parish Center, we are
hosting our first health fair from our parishioner, Dr Perry
Frankel. Perry is making available to us this Sunday four tests
for common health problems. The bulletin insert explains this
in greater detail. Suffice it to say, it might be to your benefit to
avail yourself to this opportunity. No insurance is necessary,
but if you do have insurance, please bring your card. No one
will be turned away.
Something for the body, something for the soul. Starting
next Saturday, Father Enzo del Brocco returns to Saint Rocco to
deliver a Lenten Mission. He will preach at all the Masses next
weekend and then hold a preaching service on Monday in Italian, on Tuesday in English, and a bilingual Mass on Wednesday, all at 7:30 pm. He is available for confessions and home
visits during the daytime. Please contact the office if you would
an appointment.
On Sunday morning we will present the children preparing to
receive First Holy Communion at the 10:15 am and 11:30 am
Masses. This year First Holy Communion will be celebrated in
small groups of six-eight children at six Sunday Masses during
the Easter Season on April 26th, May 3rd and May 10th. This
shift in practice aims to integrate the children into our regular
worship of God as a parish community every Sunday.
We do not live in a social context in which a First Holy
Communion outside of the normal Sunday schedule makes
sense because we can no longer depend on the fact that those
who attend a First Communion Mass participate regularly at
Sunday Mass at Saint Rocco for whatever reason. The worshipping community -- the Church -- God's family -- welcomes its
younger brothers and sisters to the share in the privilege of Holy
Communion as an expression of our love for God and for one
another.
We will offer the possibility to you to pray for one of these
children as a special way of connecting them to our parish.
Please consider taking one of the intentions. I hope these initiatives will strengthen our parish.
As we continue to cultivate a more intentional style of the
worship of God in which we consciously and fully participate in
terms not only of the responses and singing, but also and even
more importantly, in terms of our interior disposition and attentive to our encounter with God in the Sacred Liturgy, I intend
on restoring the missing section of the altar rail to make Holy
Communion easier. This renovation will take place sometime
before the summer and the Rosarians have graciously offered to
donate the funds to do so. The restoration will incorporate the
old altar gates as a decorative motif.
As far as Holy Communion goes, I have two additional comments that I hope will be helpful. I am hopeful that we are resolving the problem of the mistreatment of the Blessed Sacrament. Just to be entirely clear, to do anything with the Blessed
Sacrament other than to consume it immediately after one has
Perry ci mette a
intenzioni. Spero che queste iniziative rafforzeranno la nostra
parrocchia.
come decorazione.
Sacramento.
CHURCH OF ST. ROCCO, GLEN COVE, NEW YORK
received it is inappropriate. Please consume the host in the
presence of the priest, deacon or extraordinary minister of Holy
Communion. Do not walk away with the host in the palm of
your hand, but please place it in your mouth immediately.
Thank you.
Second, occasionally, some parishioners have asked me why
we do not ordinarily distribute the Precious Blood – please,
never call it the wine because it is not wine after the consecration but the Blessed Sacrament. The reason is simple: every
particle of the host and every drop of the precious blood is the
whole Christ – Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity – to use the
theological language. In biblical language, in Hebrew, the body
and blood refers to a living being. When we receive Christ, we
receive the entire Person, not just bits and pieces of Him.
Consequently, it logically follows that the Church imposes
no obligation to receive Holy Communion in both species;
when you receive the Host, you receive the whole Christ –
nothing is missing and nothing is added by receiving from the
Chalice – there is no more grace. Let me conclude by quoting
Father Daniel on the matter: “Don’t be a dogmatic utraquist!”
I’ll let him explain another time. He’s the Latin teacher.
God bless you,
Father Elias
Let us pray for the intentions of our Holy Father
during the month of March...
dogmatica!" Lo lascerò spiegare un'altra volta. Lui è il
professore di latino.
Dio Vi benedica,
Padre Elias
Universal Intention: That those involved in scientific
research may serve the well-being o f the whole human
person.
For Evangelization Intention: That the unique
contribution of women to the life of the Church may be
recognized always.
Bulletin Reflection
“You shall not covet” is a difficult commandment to
keep in our consumer society. But as Christian
stewards, we know that we are the recipients and
caretakers of God’s many gifts. May this realization
that all is gift help us to be less resentful of the gifts
of others.
The regular collection on 3/1/2015 was $4,449.00 The
second collection for School Support was
$1,544.00. May God bless you for your continued
support and generosity.
Thank you,
Fr. Elias
