He wishes me to reiterate his gratitude for the numerous gifts and well wishes that you extended to him. It is customary for a new priest to receive a chalice and paten as a gift from his family. Father Gabriel’s parents, brothers and sister as well as Father Daniel and I have given him his chalice. But, you, my dear parishioners, have given Father Gabriel the paten. For the rest of his life, whenever he offers the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the faithful of Saint Rocco will be intimately joined to the sacrifice because the host will rest on the paten, which you have given to him. Pray for him, and pray for vocations to the priesthood. Some of you have already seen our new exhibition by the artist, Gloria Thomas, in the parish center, which recounts the twenty centuries of the history of the Church. The exhibition, installed on the occasion of the Year of Faith, closes the renovation to the parish center that we started in 2011 and was made possible by the generous donation of Frank and Mary Spano. We will soon install a plaque in their memory. This series of twenty-one paintings with descriptions becomes an valuable tool for extending our understanding of the Church as a historical and transhistorical body whose membership include not only those baptized and presently living on the earth, but also those who have preceded us on the same journey to the New Creation. I would like to have all the description translated into Italian. If anyone would be interested in working on this important project, please, contact me. The Church is not only the Mystical Body of Christ moving through and beyond time, it also embraces the whole world, reaching out to every nation. I am sure you will enjoy the experience of the international embrace of the Church with the visit of two confreres this week: Father Benedict, who celebrated his Mass of Thanksgiving with us last February, and also Dom Sebastian, who makes his first visit to Glen Cove, and also America. They will be joining us for the March for Life in Washington, DC on January 25, 2013, the feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul. If you have never been, you really ought to go because the March is an incredibly joyful gathering of Americans who recognize that all life is valuable, and that any nation that claims to be a democracy cannot so callously disregard human dignity without dire consequences. Let’s see if Newsday even bothers to cover the March. It failed to take note of the enormous demonstration of hundreds of thousands – some say up to a million people – in Paris and other French cities in favor of marriage, and against the current fad to redefine marriage to mean anything that the powers of this world want it to mean. Since the United States observes Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, reminding us of another struggle for human dignity, it is fitting that that week should close with the contemporary struggle to protect and extend human dignity by the eradication of child sacrifice in the form of abortion from America. ROCCO, GLEN COVE, NEW YORK The protection and education of children is a responsibility for every adult, but especially for parents. I invite all parents to consider the benefits you and your family might receive from enrolling your children in our regional Catholic School, All Saints. You will have chances this week to find out how “Catholic Schools raise the standards” during Catholic Schools week (January 27-February 2, 2013). Finally, I will be away from January 21-25, 2013 to visit my family in Virginia. Father Daniel, Father Gabriel and Father Benedict will take good care of you in my absence. Dio vi benedica, Padre Elias Saturday: 3:00pm — 3:45pm BULLETIN REFLECTION In today’s second reading, St. Paul tells the Corinthians (and us) that all of our gifts are from God and they are given, not for us alone, but for the common good. The generosity of God knows no limits—the miracle at Cana reminds us that whenever we faithfully do as God asks, He can change our gifts of water into wine! LIVING STEWARDSHIP We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who are open to God’s call and stand ready to make the best use of their gifts in service to their neighbor through such efforts such as Catholic Charities. OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL LEGION OF MARY Will meet on Saturday morning at 10:30a.m. in the classroom at St. Rocco’s January 26th. All are welcome! Please consider joining us. Teaching, and encouraging people to come back to Mass and the Sacraments, teaching people how to pray the rosary, and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
