GEBIRGE IM KRIEG
Drei Jahre dauerte der Stellungskrieg in den Dolomiten und am Ortler im Rahmen des Ersten
Weltkrieges. Für die Männer an der Front ein unmenschlicher Zustand: Kälte, Hunger, Lawinen,
Steinschlag! Die Ausrüstung der Standschützen und Soldaten war mehr als unzureichend, die
Verproviantierung im Winter oft unmöglich. Auf beiden Seiten. Die Männer starben weniger unter
„Feindeinwirkung“ als durch Naturkatastrophen.
Dreißig Jahre dauert ein Stellungskrieg zwischen Indien und Pakistan am Siachen-Gletscher im
Karakorum. Bis in 6000m Höhe verläuft die Frontlinie. Wieder sterben Soldaten in Lawinen, in
Gletscherspalten, in der Winterkälte. Dabei geht es nur um einen Gebirgszug: Eis, Fels und dünne
Luft.

besichtigt werden. Das Museum ist von
10 bis 18 Uhr geöffnet, letzter Einlass 17 Uhr,
Donnerstag Ruhetag.

MONTI IN GUERRA
La guerra di posizione combattuta nelle Dolomiti e sul massiccio dell’Ortles durante la prima guerra
mondiale dura tre anni, esponendo i soldati sul fronte a sofferenze disumane, tra freddo, fame,
valanghe e cadute di massi. L’equipaggiamento dei tiratori civili e dei soldati è decisamente
insufficiente, e l’inverno spesso impedisce gli approvvigionamenti da entrambi i lati. Più che per le
azioni del nemico, si muore a causa dei disastri naturali.
Dura 30 anni la guerra di posizione tra India e Pakistan sul ghiacciaio Siachen, nel Karakorum,
lungo una linea del fronte che raggiunge quota seimila metri. Ancora una volta, i soldati muoiono
sotto le valanghe, nei crepacci e per il freddo. Ma l’oggetto del contendere tra i due Paesi non è
altro che una catena montuosa fatta di ghiaccio, roccia e aria rarefatta.

MOUNTAINS IN WAR
In the course of the First World War, the two sides were dug in in the Dolomites and on the Ortler
for three whole years. For the soldiers at the front, conditions were appalling: freezing cold, bitter
hunger and deathly avalanches and rockfalls - on both sides. Fewer lives were lost to enemy action
than to natural disasters.
For the last thirty years, India and Pakistan have been fighting a static war on the Siachen Glacier in
the Karakoram mountains - with the front line reaching 6000 metres above sea-level. Again it is
mainly the avalanches, crevasses and subzero temperatures that kill the soldiers. And all they are
fighting for is a glaciated mountain, i.e. rock, ice and thin air.
