Homer was the first to mention the island in the Odyssey (0, line 409). Syros was also home to Ferekides, Pythagoras’ teacher. You can still visit the cavern where the great philosopher lived. An independent democracy during the Classical Era, Syros was a member of the Athenian Alliance. Therefore, its fate followed that of the rest of the Aegean islands: it fell under the rule of the Macedonians, the Rhodians, and the Romans. In the Byzantine years, it ended up a poor and insignificant island with very few inhabitants, the perfect pirate lair. When the French, led by Markos Sanoudos invaded Syros in 1207, they founded the Ducat of the Aegean. During the 360 years of French rule, the locals converted to Catholicism. Syros was the only Aegean island with its whole population of 3,000 becoming Catholics. The Italians used to call Syros ISOLA DEL PAPA (the island of the Pope). The island was protected and supported by France. After Syros was reduced to rubble by the Ottoman Turks in 1821, it was rebuilt as Ermoupolis (city of Hermes, god of commerce) by refugees from Kydonies, Smyrna, Chios, and Psara. The commercial and industrial growth that followed was unprecedented for the newly-liberated Greek state. One can imagine the glory of the times by a simple look at the impressive buildings of the town, designed by Italian and German architects. SIGHTSEEING The Town Hall, by Ernst Chiller, looks more like a palace. The first plans were made in 1854 and Chiller broke ground in 1876. The Mayor of Ermoupolis, Dimitris Vafiadakis, was a great supporter of the endeavor. In the Town Hall, you can still see the straw cart that brought legendary theater actress Maria Kotopouli to her last performance. The Apollon theater, is an exact replica of La Skala of Milan. The St. Nicholas church, one of the richest in the Balkans, features works by Russian artists, the most famous of which are the Last Supper and The Pulpit. The Evangelistria Catholic church. A TRIKLITI (afto einai oros, den to vrisko) basilica, it was built in the beginning of the 19th century. ∆Ô ÈÛÙÔÚÈÎfi °˘ÌÓ¿ÛÈÔ.
