DAL VANGELO
Gv 2,1-11
Oggi come Parrocchia, in unione con tutte le comunità
cristiane del mondo, siamo invitati a celebrare e
pregare, assieme a tutti i credenti in Cristo per l'unità
dei cristiani. Da quando i cristiani delle diverse
confessioni - cattolici, ortodossi, anglicani, luterani, ...
eccetera - pregano tutti con questa intenzione, la causa
ha compiuto straordinari progressi; è opportuno
pertanto continuare e intensificare la preghiera, perché
si affretti il giorno in cui si realizzerà appieno la volontà
del nostro comune Signore.
Concluso il tempo natalizio, rientriamo nel tempo
ordinario, con un fatto straordinario. In questa
domenica siamo invitati a nozze: il Vangelo ci parla del
miracolo dell'acqua trasformata in vino alle nozze di
Cana. "Ci fu uno sposalizio a Cana di Galilea e c'era
anche la madre di Gesù. Fu invitato alle nozze pure
Gesù con i suoi discepoli. Nel frattempo venuto a
mancare il vino, la madre disse al Figlio: "Non hanno
più vino".
E' stata proprio la Madre che annunciò al Figlio che gli
sposi erano rimasti senza vino. Ma Gesù risponde:
"Che ho da fare con te o donna, non è ancora giunta
la mia ora". Maria però, a questa apparente risposta
negativa non si scompone per niente e dice con
incredibile audacia nella fede: "Fate tutto ciò che vi
dirà".
Gesù obbedisce immediatamente alla Madre e ordina ai
servi di riempire subito d'acqua le sei giare di pietra che
erano lì.
Maria non ha avuto la minima indecisione nel dire ai
servi, ancor prima di avere la sua risposta positiva.
"fate tutto ciò che Egli vi dirà". Sa benissimo che la
fiducia totale in Lui non viene mai delusa.
Lei è il Vangelo vivente, è l'esperta di Dio.
Nell'episodio si distingue la figura di Maria: è lei ad
accorgersi della difficoltà in cui stanno per incorrere gli
sposi, e subito, prima che il problema si manifesti, se ne
fa carico, segnalandolo a chi sa che lo può risolvere.
"Non hanno più vino", dice al Figlio.
Anche in base a questo episodio si è diffuso nei secoli il
ricorso a Maria da parte dei cristiani, fiduciosi che ella
possa continuare ad ottenere il benefico intervento del
suo Figlio. Tuttavia sorprende quanti hanno del
cristianesimo una cupa visione di penitenze e rinunce, il
fatto che Gesù compia un miracolo - e per di più il
primo, che è in certo modo programmatico - per un
motivo apparentemente futile: fornire altro vino a chi
pure ne aveva già bevuto. E invece questo miracolo la
dice lunga su come Gesù intenda la vita degli uomini.
Egli non li vuole certo tristi: guarisce i malati perché
siano in buona salute; nei suoi insegnamenti indica
come vivere in armonia; e non è affatto contrario alla
festa di chi banchetta in compagnia. Una gioia
perseguita senza malizia dà agli uomini la percezione di
come sarà la vita eterna, la felicità piena e senza fine
che Dio assicura agli eletti. Già Isaia (25,6) l'aveva
annunciata con l'esempio di un banchetto: il Signore
preparerà per tutti i popoli "un banchetto di grasse
vivande, un banchetto di vini eccellenti, di cibi
succulenti, di vini raffinati". E lo stesso Gesù ha
ripreso il concetto, come si legge in Matteo 8,11: "Ora
io vi dico che molti verranno dall'oriente e
dall'occidente e siederanno a mensa con Abramo,
Isacco e Giacobbe nel regno dei cieli".
La lezione principale che ci viene da questo Vangelo è
questa: dobbiamo aspettarci sempre tutto da Dio, senza
mai scoraggiarci davanti alle apparenti risposte negative
o domande inascoltate, sapendo che l'oggi di Dio, non è
il nostro oggi, e che la preghiera fatta con fede è sempre
ascoltata.
Infallibilmente. L'unico vero ostacolo è la nostra
incredulità, che può vanificare le grazie in arrivo.

planning travel tours to see Italy beginning next
September 6 to 17.
We will begin with Sicily departing from Montreal, (“Air
Canada ” &” Alitalia”). We will visit exclusively this
region which is rich in history, culture and nature.

FROM THE GOSPEL John 2,1-11
The story of the marriage feast at Cana is narrated by St. John
only. The event had probably made a deep impression on him,
as it happened only a few days after he and the other first four
disciples had decided to follow Christ. At this wedding he
witnessed the first miracle worked by our Lord. It is possible
too, that at the time he was writing his Gospel, stories were
already in circulation relating extraordinary miracles worked
by Christ as a child and youth in Nazareth. He emphatically
denies these stories by asserting this miracle at Cana as the first
of Christ's miracles.
Very probably Mary was a relative or close friend of the
groom, as she shows a deep interest in what concerned him and
seems to have a certain amount of authority in the house as she
gives orders to the servants. Jesus would be invited because of
the probable family ties.
It was the custom among the Jews at the time that a wedding
feast would go on for a week. Each guest was expected to bring
some of the necessaries for the feast. Wine was, and still is, the
ordinary drink at meals, in Mediterranean countries. The
shortage was due to oversight or perhaps because of extra
guests. Because of Mary's kindly interest in the family
concerned, she wished to save them embarrassment and
approached her Son, Jesus, knowing that he was able to help.
The time, appointed for manifesting himself as the Messiah
sent by God, had not yet come. He had not begun his public
mission yet.
The servants filled the water-jars as Christ told them, took
some of the water-turned-into-wine to the chief steward who
was so amazed at its fine quality that he questioned the groom
about it. Miracles are signs, i.e. proofs of his claim to be from
God, and stimulants to faith in his word. St. John had reason to
stress this fact.
There are many lessons we can learn from this incident in
Christ's life: for example, Christ's approval of marriage, there
were some heretical sects later who said marriage was sinful,
unfit for a Christian. Or we could see in it the intercessory
power of our blessed Mother. Christ anticipated his "hour" for
working miracles in order to grant her request. But the theme
of today's readings is the goodness and kindness of God and we
surely have a convincing proof of that loving kindness in
today's gospel story.
Christ worked his first miracle in order to grant a temporal
favor, an earthly gift, to save the newly married groom from
embarrassment. It had the other effects of convincing his very
recent disciples of their belief that he was the expected
Messiah, and also it convinces all Christians of the efficacy of
our Lady's intercession for us, but its primary purpose was to
confer a temporal benefit on the groom.
By this kind act he has shown us that he is interested in our
earthly affairs also. He became man in order that we could
become sons of God, he came on earth so that we could go to
heaven, but this miracle at Cana proves that he has a deep
interest in our many and varied activities during the course of
our journey to heaven.
He told us "ask and you shall receive." That "shall" is very
definite, our prayers will be answered, and what we should ask
for is not only spiritual gifts, but the temporal aids also which
we need. The "shall" applies to them too, as the miracle of
Cana proves. We shall get our temporal requests, provided of
course that they won't impede us on our journey to heaven. No
kind father would give his child a gift that would injure him--God is the kindest of fathers and he sees what will or will not
impede or endanger our eternal happiness. We can and should
therefore make our temporal needs known to God in our
prayers, confident that he will give us what we ask if it is for
our real good.
We have a father in heaven who really loves us, and cares for
us, let us make our temporal, as well as our spiritual needs,
known to him in confident prayer. Our requests will not go
unanswered.
CELEBRAZIONE ECUMENICA 2013 ECUMENICAL CELEBRATION
Oggi, Domenica 20 Gennaio, celebrazione Ecumenica di
Preghiera per l’Unità dei Cristiani.
Si svolgerà per la 10ma volta nella chiesa S. Marc the
Evangelist alle ore 19:30. Potremo seguire e partecipare con
un libretto bilingue (inglese e italiano) preparato per
l'occasione; seguirà un momento di "fraternità" nella loro
sala parrocchiale.
Si uniranno alla celebrazione oltre la Parrocchia di S.
Marco l’Evangelista (anglicana) anche St. Mesrob,
Armenian Church of Canada e Ottawa Mar Thoma
Church, Diocese of North America and Europe e
St. Mark and St. Monica, coptic Orthodox Church.
Today Sunday, January 20, Ecumenical Celebration of
Prayer for the Unity of Christians.
It will take place, for the tenth time, in their church at 19:30.
A bilingual (English & Italian) booklet prepared specifically
for this occasion will be made available for full
participation.
A moment of "fraternity" will follow in their parish hall.
Along wih St. Mark the Evangelist, St. Mesrob,
Armenian Church of Canada, Ottawa Mar Thoma Church,
Diocese of North America and Europe, St Mark and St
Monica, Coptic Orthodox Church, will be joining the
celebration.
