DAL VANGELO
Lc 3,15-16.21-22
In questa domenica la nostra attenzione si sposta sulle
rive del fiume Giordano dove c'è Giovanni il Battista
che battezza con l'acqua. Ma l'evangelista Luca ci
informa anche che il tempo del Battista è quasi
compiuto e che sta per entrare sulla scena del mondo
Colui che battezza in Spirito Santo e Fuoco. In questa
espressione troviamo tutta la superiorità del battesimo
cristiano che ha il suo fondamento nella persona di
Gesù... come dirà qualche versetto più avanti lo stesso
evangelista riproponendo il racconto del battesimo di
Gesù Cristo.
In cosa consiste la superiorità del battesimo cristiano?
Il testo evidenzia come Gesù e il popolo sono una
"cosa sola". Il battesimo è sostanzialmente un
sacramento che mette in comunione e deve essere la
base della comunione; con il battesimo si è radicati in
Gesù Cristo e siamo costituiti popolo della Nuova
Alleanza e Corpo di Cristo. I fedeli, dopo essere stati
incorporati a Cristo col Battesimo e costituiti popolo di
Dio e, nella loro misura, resi partecipi dell'ufficio
sacerdotale, profetico e regale di Cristo, per la loro
parte compiono, nella Chiesa e nel mondo, la missione
propria di tutto il popolo cristiano (L.G. 31).
Il santo Battesimo è il fondamento di tutta la vita
cristiana, il vestibolo d'ingresso alla vita nello Spirito
(" vitae spiritualis ianua "), e la porta che apre l'accesso
agli altri sacramenti. Mediante il Battesimo siamo
liberati dal peccato e rigenerati come figli di Dio,
diventiamo membra di Cristo; siamo incorporati alla
Chiesa e resi partecipi della sua missione... CCC 1213.
Per cui i battezzati sono chiamati fondamentalmente ad
essere il luogo ideale e visibile in cui si vive in
comunione e la comunione... è importante stare con
Gesù... perché Gesù è con noi... e noi dobbiamo essere
solidali con Lui e tra noi. Una comunità di battezzati
che ha come fulcro della sua esistenza la persona di
Gesù vive stabile, ferma e non teme nessun tipo di
terremoto... perché si è circondati e immersi
dell'/nell'Amore Divino.
Una seconda sottolineatura di questo evento: il Signore
viene.
Nella sua predicazione, Giovanni annunciava uno "più
forte" di lui, che avrebbe battezzato "in Spirito e
fuoco" (v. 16). Questi è colui che ci viene incontro nel
battesimo.
Gesù viene verso di noi: la preghiera è proprio questo
incontrarlo nel nostro quotidiano, ma non solo: è anche
e soprattutto essere visti da Lui. E se siamo visti da
Lui, tante cose cambiano in noi. E' questa la grande
grazia da chiedere: non avere visioni o apparizioni, ma
essere visti da Lui. Le visioni e apparizioni ci possono
lasciare tali e quali: i contemporanei di Gesù l'hanno
ben visto. E lo hanno visto mentre guariva i malati e
risuscitava i morti, eppure l'hanno crocefisso. Ma il
buon ladrone che è stato visto da Lui fino in fondo al
cuore, è cambiato dentro e lo ha riconosciuto.
Un test per sapere se abbiamo veramente incontrato il
Signore nella preghiera, è che non ne usciamo come
prima: cioè vediamo tutto ciò che in noi non va e che è
da cambiare, come il raggio di sole che illumina il
vetro facendo risaltare le macchie che non si vedevano
quando era nell'ombra.
Così come non si esce indenni dal confronto con la
Parola di Dio. Nessuno esce indenne da questo
confronto: quando siamo alla presenza di Dio, succede
come quando il Sole sfavillante che illumina con la
Sua luce il vetro della nostra anima, facendone
risaltare le macchie. E allora decidiamo di toglierle,
decidiamo di cambiare vita. Iniziamo veramente un
cammino di conversione.
E' questo il battesimo in Spirito Santo e fuoco.

LOTTERY
Una parte importante di questa attività è la Lotteria.
La lotteria ci permette di tenere basso il prezzo del
biglietto di entrata mantenendo alto il netto finanziario
in sostegno della Parrocchia.
I biglietti sono ne sono rimasti tanti per essere
distribuiti e venduti: abbiamo ancora un'altra settimana
per venderli... diamoci da fare!
A very important part of this event is the Lottery.
It permits us to keep the admission price low at the same
time help maintain the Parish financially.
The lottery tickets are ready to be distributed and sold.
There are still many tickets left to be distributed and
sold: we have one more week to Friday ...let’s get
ourselves involved.

Prossima attività sociale in Parrocchia è prevista per il sabato 16 Febbraio.
Non potendola celebrare il 14 (giorno feriale) si posticipa al sabato seguente.

FROM THE GOSPEL Lk 3,15-16.21-22
St. Luke tells us of the Baptist's preaching and
baptizing at the Jordan. This appearance of John the
Baptist was causing great excitement. The people
flocked to him from all over the country. We learn
from St. John's Gospel that some men from Galilee had
become his disciples, Andrew, and most probably
John, and that others including Peter, brother of
Andrew, and Philip were in the vicinity.
John's baptism was only a symbol representing the
interior conversion from sin and worldliness. The
baptism which Jesus would confer on those really
converted to him, would do what it signified, it would
be a reality not a symbol. Those receiving Christ's
baptism will receive grace, the friendship, as well as
other gifts through the giving of the Holy Spirit, the
Sanctifier.
At the beginning of his mission of salvation for all, the
Messiah, in his human nature, received the fullness of
divine assistance. God the Father, at the same time,
proclaims that this is the Messiah, the "servant of God
, foretold by the second-Isaiah, which we have heard in
the first reading today. That he was more than a mere
human servant, that he was God as well, was not
understood by those at the Jordan that day, but it was
understood and accepted by the disciples and their
converts from the day of Pentecost.
Of the hundreds of Jews who had flocked to hear the
Baptist's message, and who were present when Christ
insisted on going through John's baptismal rite and
who had probably heard the words from heaven
proclaiming him to be the expected Messiah, only two
left the Baptist and followed him. One of these was
Andrew and the other was most probably John the
Evangelist. Later in that day Andrew told Peter, his
brother, that he had found the Messiah and Peter joined
him too.
What was wrong with the hundreds of others? We are
told they were all agog about the Messiah and were
wondering in their hearts if John was not he. Yet when
the real Messiah was pointed out to them they did
nothing about it. John had told them the Messiah
would baptize them, not with water as he did, but with
the Holy Spirit of God, and with fire.
Were they so anxious for a king, a messiah, who would
set them free from the hated pagan Romans and give
them once more a powerful earthly kingdom, that talk
of the kingdom of God and of a spiritual life made no
impression on them?
Their dealings with Christ during his public mission
amongst them, their disbelief, their opposition, their
persecution, which led eventually to the death on the
cross answer these questions for us. The vast majority
of the Jews of that day did not want a spiritual Messiah
or kingdom. They were not interested in a heaven of
the future, they wanted their heaven, their happiness,
and prosperity here on earth.
Before we pass any judgement on such folly let us
have a look into our own hearts today. We are
Christians, we are followers of Christ, we know he was
God, we believe his word. We are convinced that
getting to heaven is more important than getting all the
treasures and pleasures this earth has to offer. In our
work, in our speech, in our dealings with others, in our
family life are we truly following Christ and his
teaching?
Is our way of life, our daily conduct, such that it would
cause a non-Christian to say: "These people have
something noble and sensible about them; they have an
inward peace and sense of security which I have not
got, a sense of peace and security which comes not
from the things of this world. I must find out what it is
and get it for myself?"
In all sincerity I cannot see any non-Christian speaking
thus of me today, but helped by God's grace, it could
and may be truly said of me in the days to come. God
grant that this may be so.
CELEBRAZIONE ECUMENICA 2013 ECUMENICAL CELEBRATION
Domenica prossima, 20 Gennaio, celebrazione Ecumenica
di Preghiera per l’Unità dei Cristiani.
Si svolgerà per la 10ma volta nella chiesa S. Marc the
Evangelist alle ore 19:30. Potremo seguire e partecipare con
un libretto bilingue (inglese e italiano) preparato per
l'occasione; seguirà un momento di "fraternità" nella loro sala
parrocchiale.
Si uniranno alla celebrazione oltre la Parrocchia di S. Marco
l’Evangelista (anglicana) anche St. Mesrob, Armenian
Church of Canada e Ottawa Mar Thoma Church, Diocese of
North America and Europe e St. Mark and St. Monica, coptic
Orthodox Church.
Next Sunday, January 20, Ecumenical Celebration of
Prayer for the Unity of Christians.
It will take place, for the tenth time, in their church at 19:30.
A bilingual (English & Italian) booklet prepared specifically
for this occasion will be made available for full participation.
A moment of "fraternity" will follow in their parish hall.
Along wih St. Mark the Evangelist, St. Mesrob, Armenian
Church of Canada, Ottawa Mar Thoma Church, Diocese of
North America and Europe, St Mark and St Monica, Coptic
Orthodox Church, will be joining the celebration.
