Description of the PhD Programme
The 31st cycle PhD programme in Preservation of the Architectural Heritage was first held at
Milan-based Politecnico back in 1983. In addition to the professors of architectural restoration,
history of architecture, structural strengthening of the Politecnico di Milano, the Faculty Board
includes representatives from other well-known universities and research institutes: in particular
the professors of the Università di Genova, IUAV - Venezia and the experts at the highest level in
the field of preservation of cultural heritage from Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione e il
Restauro ISCR and from Institute for the Conservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage
ICVBC of the CNR. The ultimate purpose of the enlarged Faculty Board not only resides in
broadening the experiences that the PhD candidates will acquire over the first three years of the
course, it chiefly aims at providing the PhD candidates with a unique training experience in the
Italian panorama, so far unparalleled also in domains other than the preservation and restoration.
Such context investigates the synergies and responses to the contemporary themes of cultural
heritage protection. The PhD programme is meant as the place where theorization, methodology,
investigation into the most significant chapters of the protection of historic architectural and
cultural heritage will be connected to complex, challenging operating research themes, on-site
and lab experimentation of analytical and diagnostic stages and, finally, the experimentation at
building sites which cater for the foremost Italian works. The Faculty Board organization allows to
investigate and share relevant topics, that describe the complex domain of preservation, a
strategic field and, at the same time, one of the chief resources of the Italian economy and future.
The on-going contact with the breakthroughs from studies and research carried out in Italian and
international contexts and the will to promote joint projects, are fostered through expanding the
network of relations with other foreign universities. In this regard, over the past 3 years the PhD
programme has been committed to promoting and coordinating inter-doctoral courses,
contributed by foreign professors from different European countries. Such activity will further
benefit from the co-operation with other PhD programmes in the Politecnico di Milano and the
universities that collaborate with the PhD programme activities. Administrative location:

Preservation of the Architectural Heritage welcomes foreign and Italian students. All candidates
will be admitted with the basic departmental scholarships, and the specific research subject will
be assigned, with the agreement of the PhD candidate and the Board of Professors, within the
first years. Within the 31st cycle PhD Programme, the following additional subjects are proposed:Damage and reconstruction in ethnic conflict- Modernity and Preservation - Transformation and
preservation of traditional buildings in different cultural context (Europe, Asia, South-America)
Studies on traditional settlements and related construction techniques in the far East RegionsStructural problems and seismic prevention (diagnosis and monitoring)- Contemporary
Restoration sites (UNESCO) - Organic components in the ancient mortars - Documentation of the
architectural heritage: ICT integrated system for the data collection and management- Energy
issue about traditional and modern buildings.

In case of a change of the welfare rates during the three-year period, the amount could be modified.
Context of the research activity
The PhD programme calls for the acquisition of 180
credits overall.
30 credits are concentrated in the first year: 25 (minimum)
offered by PhD courses organized by the PhD programme
in Preservation of the architectural heritage, and 5 offered
by the PhD School.
The remaining credits are aimed at personal study and
research for preparation of the PhD thesis.

The academic plan of the PhD programme revolves
around 5 main research areas:
- Heritage Preservation: culture and practice;
- Diagnostics of materials and structures and rehabilitation
of historic buildings;
- Methods and themes of historical research;
- Construction history;
- Historical territory and landscape.
PhD candidates may also attend courses offered by the
School for Specialists in Milan and in Genoa, in order to
add more specific knowledge to that acquired in the
Master of Science courses as well as in relation to the
various topics of the thesis.

Besides the doctoral courses, the PhD programme
comprises workshops, visits and intensive courses
dealing with innovative themes.
To the aim of their thesis research, PhD candidates will
have the opportunity to rely on facilities and laboratories

the breadth and width of which provides them with a
crucial support to the aim of acquiring competence for
highly qualified research activities in the domain of cultural
heritage protection

Studying material substance of buildings, techniques and
treatments has a cognitive purpose, is a necessary
premise of planning and design processes, if it is strongly
related to the theoretical aspects and to the debate on
history and historiography of architecture and
preservation.
The doctoral activities also include attendance of
workshops, seminars, international conferences related to
individual research, with great attention to conferences
wherein PhD candidates present the results, even partial,
of their research theses.
Graduates of the PhD programme often find employment
in public sector, preservation institutions at progressively
higher levels, as well as in professional practices and in
the business world, in specific specialized fields.

There are various forms of financial aid supporting the teaching practice.
The PhD candidate is encouraged to take part in these activities, within the limits allowed by the
regulations.
Computer availability:
In the CBA PhD room are available 4 workstations for shared use, connected with the printer and
a plotter. All the PhD students can use their own laptop with the wireless connection.
Workstations and other equipment are available in the various laboratories linked with the
doctoral programme.
