Sicilia En Primeur Welcome to Donnafugata Visiting the Donnafugata estate in Contessa Entellina, you come across the Sicilian countryside in spring: a shining landscape, rich in colors and scents of the Mediterranean. It is a place of the myth in literary Sicily, the novel Il Gattopardo (The Leopard) with its Donnafugata estate and its history, by which the company has always been inspired, is set in these lands. The Contessa Entellina estate, with its 270 hectares of vineyards, spread over 10 different districts is a complex production system which allows the winery to select, according to the characteristics of each vine variety, the ideal habitat. Exposure, slope, soil composition, along with the more typically climatic aspects, (rainfall, temperature and ventilation) together define the concept of terroir, the basis of the Rallo family's production philosophy. A philosophy that is reflected in the company's vineyards on the island of Pantelleria, spread over 68 hectares planted to vines, divided into 12 districts. A complexity of conditions that are a treasure-trove for the heroic viticulture on the island, centered on an agricultural system in which the vines are cultivated entirely by hand on terraces with the alberello training system. A productive excellence that has won over the top international wine critics and the favor of many wine lovers. The Tasting at Donnafugata Donnafugata has wished to reserve three mini-verticals dedicated to the Top Wines of the winery for guest journalists. It starts with Chiarandà, the most aristocratic of Donnafugata's whites, proposed in the 2001, 2006 and 2010 vintages. Following this, the mini-vertical dedicated to Mille e Una Notte – the red that is the symbol of Donnafugata, present with the 2004, 2006 and 2008 vintages. Lastly, the memorable Ben Ryé from Pantelleria, considered among the best naturally sweet Passito wines ever. The bottles proposed in the tasting are 2004, 2008 and 2011. Lunch will be the time to try the food and wine pairings, in the context of a gourmet picnic that plays with the seasonal nature of the vegetable garden. A series of tastes in search of the perfect union: bruschetta with fava beans and mint and the Grillo SurSur, or aubergine involtino with Sherazade, a fresh and fruity Nero d’Avola? Arancina with primo sale cheese and a mineral white as Vigna di Gabri, or the little meatball in sauce with a charming and versatile red as Tancredi? Everyone will agree on the dessert with a fresh radiant splendor of Kabir, Moscato di Pantelleria, matched with a Sicilianissima lemon granita and mignon brioche.
