Vino del Mese / October This month we head north to Lombardia. Most visitors come to this region to relax on Lago di Como or shop in Milano. However, many people are not aware that Lombardia is also Italy’s top spumante producing region. Spumante, which is made using the same process as champagne, is also made from the same grape varietals as champagne (largely chardonnay and/or pinot nero/noir). Our wine pick this month is a Spumante called Franciacorta Gran Cuvee’ Brut from Bellavista. This sparkling wine comes from the Bellavista Franciacorta Estate which has been owned by the Moretti family since 1977. It’s made from mostly Chardonnay (75%) and the rest Pinot Nero (25%) (Pinot Noir in French) and aged for 7 months in barrique. It’s extremely pleasant on the nose calling to mind notes of pollin, bee’s wax, nuts, minerals and white flowers. It’s elegant and bright pairing very nicely with delicate seafood like lobster, but it’s also the perfect aperitivo or digestivo. There were only 80,000 bottles of this Spumante made. Excellent vintages include 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002. All month, Cittanuova patrons can take advantage of a 10% discount on our Franciacorta Gran Cuvee’ Brut 2000. Offer valid the entire month of October. 29 Newtown Lane East Hampton,NY 631-324-6300 www.cittanuova.com
