Studies and Research
Since 2011, the Observatory produces an annual Report on
Tourism, which provides a comparative reading of tourism trends
and a unified view of the most relevant information on the tourism
sector. With the collaboration of Istat, the ONT processes and
disseminates information provided by surveys on tourist flows
and accommodation facilities, and contributes to improve the
production of tourism statistics, including the compilation of the
Tourism Satellite Account, based on international guidelines.
The ONT analyzes and processes data from Banca d’Italia
related to the sample survey on flows at national borders,
produced for the compilation of the tourism balance of payments.
Furthermore, it disseminates periodic sample surveys produced
by Unioncamere on Italian tourist behaviours, as well as on
trends of flows in accommodation bookings. It plans and carries
out, also in collaboration with Unioncamere, monographic
studies and surveys relating to specific product areas and or
source markets of the tourism demand.

The institutional website www.ontit.it ensures the best results in
disseminating research and scientific studies.
The website management team updates in real time the main
figures on tourism in Italy and in the world and prepares in-depth
analysis of specific topics related to the economy of tourism in
both its components of demand and supply, through a careful
monitoring of the sources.
The portal contains:
• a documentary library with more than 3,000 selected studies
and surveys from various sources, both Italian and foreign,
freely available and downloadable;
• two databases with statistical data produced by Istat and the
Bank of Italy available through special query filters;
• insights on current issues and focus on the most relevant
Italian and international tourism phenomena;
• an updated set of constantly updated indicators, on major
national and international tourism trends;
• a series of maps and charts showing main trends in Italian
tourism offer and demand;
• a collection of the main national and regional norms regulating
the tourism sector;
• a calendar of the most important national and international
sectoral events;
• a section on Italian tourism educational offer and a directory
of the main players of the tourism sector.

Le attività di ricerca e studio
The Italian National Tourism Observatory
L’Osservatorio Nazionale del Turismo (ONT) è stato istituito con
D.P.R. n. 207 del 6 aprile 2006 e regolamentato con D.P.C.M.
del 16 febbraio 2007. Ha sede a Roma, presso il Dipartimento
per gli Affari Regionali il Turismo e lo Sport della Presidenza del
Consiglio dei Ministri, Ufficio per le politiche del turismo. L’ONT
risponde all’esigenza di avere un organismo di riferimento per
la conoscenza e la rilevazione dei fenomeni turistici, in grado di
organizzare e sistematizzare la produzione statistica disponibile,
integrandola con altre analisi e indagini.
L’ONT, dal 2011, realizza il Rapporto sul turismo, che fornisce una
lettura comparata del fenomeno turistico su base annuale e una
visione unitaria delle informazioni più rilevanti per la conoscenza
del settore. L’ONT, con la collaborazione di Istat, divulga ed elabora
le informazioni derivanti dalla rilevazione censuaria sui flussi
turistici e sulla consistenza delle strutture ricettive e contribuisce al
miglioramento della produzione di statistiche sul turismo, compilando,
tra l’altro, il Conto Satellite del Turismo, sulla base delle linee guida
internazionali. Analizza ed elabora i dati della Banca d’Italia relativi
all’indagine campionaria alle frontiere, realizzata per la compilazione
della Bilancia turistica dei pagamenti. Divulga le indagini campionarie
prodotte da Unioncamere sui comportamenti turistici degli italiani e
sull’andamento delle prenotazioni presso gli operatori della ricettività.
Pianifica e realizza, inoltre, con la collaborazione di Unioncamere,
studi monografici e indagini su specifiche aree prodotto e/o mercati di
provenienza della domanda turistica.
The National Tourism Observatory (ONT) was established in
2006. Housed at the Department for Regional Affairs, Tourism
and Sport of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, Office
for Tourism Policies. The ONT meets the need for an organism
of reference at national level for the analysis and understanding
of the phenomena related to Italian tourism. It ensures a proper
systematization of data collection and statistical information,
organizes the whole national production of tourism statistics,
integrating it with other relevant analysis and surveys.
Gli obiettivi dell’ONT
• Unificare la ricerca esistente sul turismo in una visione
sistemica e aggiornata, arricchendola con approfondimenti su
temi specifici.
• Divulgare informazioni e dati sui principali trend e fenomeni
turistici.
• Promuovere iniziative per uniformare e ampliare la raccolta di
dati statistici di settore.
• Fornire indicazioni utili ai decisori politici per le strategie e gli
interventi di programmazione e promozione dell’offerta turistica
italiana.
• Fungere da raccordo tra i vari livelli istituzionali e territoriali sul
piano della conoscenza del turismo, ponendosi come modello
replicabile.
L’organizzazione
La presidenza dell’ONT è affidata al Capo del Dipartimento.
Le attività sono coordinate da una struttura che opera presso
l’Ufficio per le politiche del turismo, la quale, avvalendosi di un
gruppo redazionale, organizza le attività di studio, ricerca e
monitoraggio delle dinamiche, anche previsionali, del sistema
turistico. Nell’ottica di assicurare una governance condivisa, l’ONT
si avvale della collaborazione dei rappresentanti delle Regioni e
di un partenariato tecnico costituito da: Istat, Banca d’Italia e
Unioncamere.

Per garantire la massima diffusione delle attività di ricerca e
approfondimento scientifico, l’ONT si è dotato di un portale
istituzionale: www.ontit.it Il gruppo redazionale, che ne gestisce
i contenuti, lo aggiorna in tempo reale con i principali dati
sull’andamento del turismo in Italia e nel Mondo. Inoltre, redige
analisi e approfondimenti su specifici temi relativi all’economia del
turismo. Il portale contiene:
• una libreria documentale con oltre 3.000 studi e indagini, realizzate
da fonti italiane e straniere, liberamente consultabili e scaricabili;
• due database con i dati prodotti da Istat e da Banca d’Italia,
consultabili attraverso apposite maschere di interrogazione;
• approfondimenti su avvenimenti e fenomeni d’interesse turistico,
anche internazionale;
• un set aggiornato di indicatori sintetici sui principali trend di settore;
• una serie di mappe e grafici rappresentativi della domanda e
dell’offerta turistica italiana;
• una raccolta della principale normativa di settore;
• l’agenda dei più importanti eventi nazionali ed esteri;
• un’area contenente l’offerta formativa italiana di settore e la
rubrica dei principali attori che operano nel turismo.
Fundamental Objectives
• Unifying existing research on tourism into an integrated and
updated statistical system with focus on specific issues;
• Disseminating information and data on the main trends of
tourism phenomena;
• Promoting initiatives to standardize and enhance data
collection in the tourism field;
• Providing useful indications to policy makers for strategic and
action planning, as well as for promotion and communication
of the Italian tourism offer;
• Networking the various institutional and territorial levels in
charge of the production and analysis of tourism statistics
acting as a replicable model.
Organization
The National Observatory of Tourism is chaired by the Head
of the Department. Operational activities are coordinated by
a dedicated structure operating within the Office for Tourism
Policies, which organizes the activities of study, research and
monitoring on the economic and social dynamics of the tourism
system and tourism flows, including forecasts.
In order to ensure a shared governance, the ONT cooperates
with Regional administrations and has established partnerships
with Istat (the Italian National Institute of Statistics), Banca
d’Italia (Bank of Italy) and Unioncamere (the Italian Association
of Chambers of Commerce).
