Ever since he was very young, Oscar Pistorius
has had to cope with a serious malformation
in his legs, which caused their amputation
below the knee when he was only eleven
months old. Yet, what has always appeared to
the world’s eyes as a cruel impairment is also
what has transformed him into a special person endowed with an unequalled will-power.
He has attracted the general public’s attention
since 2004, when he became a track-and-field
star thanks to the prodigious results achieved
in his specialties, competing both against athletes of his category and against able-bodied
athletes.
Winner of three gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and three-world-record
holder in the 100m, 200m and 400m events
for his category, he is also committed in front
line to the cause of the Mozambican children
maimed by landmines.

Fin da piccolo ha dovuto fare i conti con
una grave malformazione alle gambe,
amputate sotto il ginocchio quando aveva
solo undici mesi. Eppure, ciò che agli
occhi del mondo è sempre apparsa come
una crudele menomazione è anche ciò
che lo ha trasformato in una persona speciale con una forza di volontà senza
uguali. Si è imposto all’attenzione del
grande pubblico a partire dal 2004,
quando è diventato un astro dell’atletica
leggera grazie ai prodigiosi risultati ottenuti nelle sue specialità, gareggiando
tanto contro atleti della sua categoria,
quanto contro atleti normodotati.
Vincitore di tre ori alle Paralimpiadi di Pechino 2008 e detentore di tre record mondiali sui 100, 200 e 400 metri per la sua
categoria, è impegnato in prima linea a
favore dei bambini mozambichiani menomati dalle mine antiuomo.

and surveys the fundamental stages of his
growth up to his first, prodigious sports successes.
Thanks to an activity of excellence, which involved twelve students of the “Ginnasio-liceo
Giovanni Paolo I” of Venice, the contents of the
meeting took the shape of a book: in it you can
find a testimony which spurs all the readers
to get rid of their prejudices on physical disabilities, to accept their limitations as intrinsic
to our common human condition and to discover the thousands of unexpressed abilities
we all have inside ourselves.
OSCAR PISTORIUS si racconta agli studenti veneziani incontrati il 28 gennaio
2010 e ripercorre le tappe fondamentali
della propria crescita fino ai primi prodigiosi successi nello sport.
Grazie ad un’attività di eccellenza, che ha
impegnato dodici alunni del liceo “Giovanni Paolo I” di Venezia, i contenuti di
questo incontro hanno preso forma di
libro: vi è racchiusa una testimonianza
che stimola i lettori ad uscire dal pregiudizio sulla disabilità fisica, ad accettare il
limite come elemento intrinseco alla condizione umana e a scoprire le mille abilità
inespresse che ognuno ha dentro di sé.
