Charlotte Sq., Edinburgh
Right in the heart of Georgian Edinburgh, Charlotte Square
is designated a UNESCO World heritage site.
Charlotte Square was the last part of the initial phase of the
New Town to be completed in 1820. Much of it was the
design of Robert Adam.
For the last three weeks in August each year Charlotte
Square Gardens are the site of the Edinburgh International
Book Festival.

Whether it is baroque Rome, migrant
modern Milan, or classical Georgian
Edinburgh,
City effects city defects takes its cue
from Gadda’s satirical redevelopment of
Milan in L’Adalgisa (1944).
planning and changing the City through
real or fictional development is a
temptation only few manage to resist.
In this book the people of Milan are
forced to migrate within the old urban
(existential) premises under the pressure
of redevelopment (the ageless utopia of
collective and invidual renovation).
