Full of monuments, its old town centre is deemed to be the most beautiful in the world for its wealth of works of art. For this reason, every year, about 5 million tourists come to Rome. The Roman emperors Julius Caesar and Augustus embellished the city by building majestic monuments such as the Theater of Marcellus, the Roman Forum, the Mausoleum Augusteo and the Pantheon. When you walk in the old town centre you can admire the Colosseum, the Arch of Costantinus, and Saint Angel Castle. The latter was built as a mausoleum by the Emperor Hadrian, in 139 A.D., later transformed in a real stronghold under Leone IV in the IX century. In Rome you can also see the most famous church in the world: the Basilica of St. Peter. In fact, Rome is the centre of Christianity and hosts the “Vatican City”- see of the Pope - where the works of the greatest artists of the Renaissance, such as Michelangelo, Raffaello, Bramante and Cellini can be admired. The popes had monuments built and palaces embellished by the masterpieces of Bernini and Borromini. Therefore, besides the galleries and parks, you can walk among museums under the open sky, such as Piazza Navona, with its “Four Rivers Fountain” by Bernini, Piazza del Campidoglio - built by Michelangelo - with the Marcus Aurelius Statue, Piazza di Spagna with its “Barcaccia”, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain. But Rome is not only art and history. The friendliness of Romans, the streets of the “made in Italy” shopping, the taste of the Castelli Romani food and wines and much more will make your evenings pleasant while strolling the many pedestrian precincts in the old town centre.
