Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church PHAROS Celebrating Our 13th Year of Publication! NOVEMBER, 2005 “DO YOU BELIEVE IN ANGELS?” By Fr. Manuel J. Burdusi On November 8th, we commemorate the Archangels Michael and Gabriel and all the bodiless and heavenly orders - the angels. For Orthodox Christians, angels are not merely faithful decorations for Christmas trees, but real heavenly beings created by God. Angels do exist and they have a function in God’s plan of salvation. So how do I know there are angels when they can’t be seen? For the same reason there are satellite waves that carry our voices, pictures and music through the air. How can we speak with someone on a cell phone and hear someone thousands of miles away when there is no wire connection? It’s an invisible connection, yet it does exist. So it is with the angels. They do exist even if they can’t be seen. Just because I cannot see them does not mean that they do not exist. Others have seen them and the Bible, which is God’s word to us, has vouched for their existence. Jesus believed in angels. When they came to arrest Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane, He said that He could pray to His Father in heaven and He would send 12 legions of angels to His aid. The angels belong to Jesus, because He created them in the beginning before man. In his Epistle to the Hebrews, St. Paul says the angels are “ministering spirits sent forth to serve for the sake of those who are to obtain salvation.” (Heb. 1:14) There are over 300 references to angels in the Bible. The existence of angels tells us that God is constantly intervening in the world to guide, comfort, strengthen and protect us. The world is always open to God’s loving, caring intervention. Angels therefore are not only messengers, but also protectors. We also believe in guardian angels. In the prayers of the baptismal service, we ask God to assign a special guardian angel to the newly baptized child to protect him throughout the journey of life. Think about your own life and ask yourself how many times an angel has helped you, protected you or even healed you? I can think of many times in my life. Remember that when our prayers ascend to heaven, God sends the angels and they descend to help us. God loves us so much that He has assigned each of us an angel for our life’s journey. Have we come to know our guardian angel or do we forget that he is there. Let us make friends with the angel that is beside us at all times, for it is he that will carry us to God’s presence when we die. Each time we pray we should remind ourselves that an angel of the Lord is with us and thank God for keeping him near us. Let us also imitate our guardian angel and go out of our way to help people around us as we go through life. I conclude with a petition that we say at every Divine Liturgy, “For an angel of peace, a faithful guide, a guardian of our souls and bodies, let us ask of the Lord.” May you have an angelic November filled with a heart of gratitude and thanks to God. – Fr. PAGE 2 PHAROS/º∞ƒO™ November/¡Ô¤Ì‚ÚÈÔ˜—2005 GIVING THANKS “Thank you”, “efharisto”, - one of the very first phrases that as youngsters we have all been taught by our parents and reinforced by our teachers and caring adults who have helped to mold our character. We have been taught to thank God daily for our blessings; for all that we are and all that we possess have been bestowed through His Grace. Not only does God want each of us to communicate with Him individually through prayer in the privacy of our homes, but He wants us to praise and glorify Him and to thank Him collectively as we celebrate the liturgy, the Eucharist, together in the church edifice. We have been taught to thank persons who have shown us acts of kindness, for their thoughtfulness, as well as material gifts. When we receive gifts in response to formal invitations to celebratory occasions, we acknowledge them properly with formal cards of thanks. Knowing this to be proper etiquette greeting card companies conve- niently group their wares along side one another in their display cases. Why then are expressions of thanks becoming rarer in today’s society? Are we taking kindnesses for granted? It’s as though the words “thank you” are headed toward extinction. Will we be seeing them on the endangered list? It costs us nothing to express our appreciation to one another: to family members, close friends, mere acquaintances, the mail carrier, the clerk at the mall, persons you encounter whom you don’t know and will probably never meet whether offering you service by phone or giving you the right-ofway on the highway, etc., etc., etc. A pleasant smile and a simple “thanks” go a long way in helping the recipient of such a gesture enjoy a brighter day. Furthermore, this behavior is contagious. Repaying a favor by extending a favor to someone else is a meaningful way to express gratitude. “∂˘¯·ÚÈÛÙÒ”!! To paraphrase Mother Teresa: One should feel uplifted for having met and been with you. As our national holiday of Thanksgiving approaches may it serve as a reminder to us that just as our forefathers constantly gave thanks to God for their freedoms in the new nation; so, too, must we praise and thank God for the blessings He has bestowed on our beloved America.
