“JESUS CHRIST IS THE REASON”
During recent years we have all observed the overwhelming
emphasis on the secular aspect of the Christmas holiday. The
commercialization of this holy day begins in early autumn,
when even on children’s TV programs advertisements implant
in their young minds which things they will want on their “wish”
lists. Would it not be more valuable for the children if, along
with the year’s “hot” toy or electronic game, they were told
about the Baby Jesus, the Gift we all receive at Christmas?
When we begin hearing the phrase “Only - days before
Christmas” the implication is that there are only so many shopping days remaining. Would it not be more significant for us if
the message heralding Christmas were, “Advent has begun; let
us prepare for the birth of the King”? If it were not for the
anticipation of mounting Christmas sales putting the retailers
in the black for the year, it appears that the trend would be to
obliterate this religious holiday.
In America the shift away from the religious core of the holiday and toward the commercial emphasis has been occurring
rather gradually; a subtle attempt to hijack the real meaning of
Christmas, public schools no longer close for Christmas, but for
the “Winter” holiday (similar wording of “Spring” holiday at
Easter). This trend has been apparent in the winter music concerts of our public schools (formerly known as Christmas concerts) at which religious Christmas Carols are avoided, giving
way to musical compositions extolling the joys of the winter
season.
Generic greetings of “Happy Holidays” abound instead of
“Merry Christmas” specifying the holiday that we are honoring. Some have even taken to substituting “Xmas” for Christmas, the day on which our Lord was delivered to us. The shift
of Christmas merrymaking has fled from the twelve days following Christmas through Epiphany to party time beginning
early in December and all but forgotten on December 26th. As
the late Very Rev. Fr. George Gallos of the Annunciation
Church in Baltimore noted in a sermon many years ago, it is
almost impossible to hear Christmas Carols on the day after
Christmas. Unfortunately, most of us have simply accepted
these trends not realizing that they are all serving to erode
Christianity in our nation. How could this be since America
was founded on Judeo-Christian principles, assuring each of us
freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion?

SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS
∂˘ÏÔÁ›Ù (Evlogite). Greetings once again to all of our church
family.
How quickly, as the calendar shows us, the year has gone by.
December is here and we once again will be caught up in the spirit
of the holiday. As the commercials proclaim. But let us not forget
to keep within our hearts the real meaning of this most beautiful
season….that is the joyous Birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
As the Advent began on November 15th and runs through Christmas Eve, let’s remember that this is a 40 day fast period too, not
just a countdown period to how many shopping days are left to buy
the perfect gift…but what the meaning of each day is leading to the
Birthday of Jesus. This is what we in Sunday school strive to teach
our students.
Every year, the Sunday school usually hosts a big Holiday Program. This year, however, on Sunday, December 17th, the students
will gather in front of the Christmas tree in the Atrium and present
a few of the traditional Kalanta in Greek and English.
But first most in our minds and hearts, we were all saddened to
learn of the death of the father of our Principal, Sophia and teachers, Penny and Stavroula Gerapetritis. From all the teachers and
aides of Sunday School we would like to extend our deepest sympathies in the loss of a great husband and father, to Mrs. Fotoula,
Sophia, Penny, Stavroula and Tommy. May God give rest to the
soul of Mr. Michael Gerapetritis and may his Memory be Eternal.
To our church families, the Sunday School Staff wishes everyone a Blessed Christmas and may the New Year of 2007 bring
peace, joy, prosperity and much faith and blessings to you and your
families. May God Bless all of you.

GREEKTOWN CDC
We had a successful Community Clean Up on October 21, 2006
in conjunction with Baltimore City Mayor’s office. Thirty neighbors turned out to serve their community.
Recently, a problem with the back up of sewage has occurred at
several streets in Greektown. John Gavrilis met with City officials
and the problem streets will have the sewage lines cleaned on a
quarterly basis.
John Gavrilis and the Greektown CDC Board of Directors have
met with a state transportation official on a proposed sound barrier along I-895, parallel to Quail and Rappolla Streets.
Our next monthly dumpster will be located at Quail & Foster
Streets on Saturday, December 9, 2006 from 9-2 pm.
The Greektown CDC is currently in need of volunteers to monitor the CCTV cameras at the Southeastern Police Department for
one hour, once a month. Please call John Gavrilis or Lori at 410327-3306 to volunteer. Believe in your Community!
John E. Gavrilis, CEO, the Board of Directors and Staff wish everyone Happy Holidays.

DECEMBER/¢∂∫∂ªµƒπO™—2006
PHAROS/º∞ƒO™
“JESUS CHRIST IS THE REASON”
On the positive side, however, we are now beginning to witness a surprising and pleasant turnaround during this Christmas
season. Although commercialism still appears to dominate this
holy season, the greeting which some major retailers are once
again incorporating and encouraging their staffs to use is
“Merry Christmas” not merely “Happy Holidays”. This is primarily due to the outcry of the public made known by many
Christian churches. Likewise, music/drama programs in a few
of our public schools are proudly proclaiming Christmas programs which include Christmas Carols and religious themes.
Once again these traditional presentations are in response to
active Christian groups. Should we Orthodox not follow their
lead and become active reinstating Christian observances
whenever and wherever we can? Can we afford to remain passive, taking our religion for granted? If we are devout Orthodox Christians, each of us has an obligation to proclaim, defend,
and preserve Christianity. Of course, we must we must first
LIVE our Orthodox faith following the principles set for us by
Christ, our teacher and role model. We must stand united in a
secular world defending our high holy days such as Christmas.
Just as we prepare and decorate our homes to receive Christ
externally, as Orthodox Christians we must prepare our hearts
to receive Him. Coming closer to Him should head our “Wish”
list as we pray, attend and participate in religious services, and
follow dietary abstinence as prescribed by the Church.
PAGE 7
From page 1
All the hype of our Christmas observance should not simply
be done in a pagan style to brighten the darkness of winter days
or in anticipation of the material gifts that we are about to receive. The use of Christmas lights to welcome Jesus should remind us that we are about to receive the Light of the World.
The giving of Christmas presents should remind us that this tradition is in remembrance of our joy in receiving God’s greatest
gift: His Son Jesus. Displaying the crèche in our homes reminds us of Christ’s humility; our Savior was born in a manger
among the farm animals, not in a royal palace. Thinking of and
sharing with others, especially at this time of the year should
serve to reinforce in us the life that Jesus led: shunning no one,
walking among and mingling with the common folk, not the
select few of a certain class, while teaching and living His message of LOVE. Sending cards and contacting others at
Christmastime gives us an opportunity to extol our joy that
Christ, the King is born!
Our traditions should aid in warming our hearts and enriching our celebration of Christmas - the fulfillment of God’s plan
as prophesied in the Old Testament: the coming of His Son to
save us from our sinful ways.
The staff of the PHAROS wishes everyone
A VERY BLESSED AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Eve Lallas
