Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church PHAROS Celebrating Our 14th Year of Publication! JUNE, 2006 REFLECTIONS ON PENTECOST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT As recorded in the Gospel of Saint John, Jesus in His Last Supper discourses explained to His disciples that although He would endure His Passion, be resurrected and finally ascend to His Father, He would not abandon them. He assured them that His ultimate departure would be to their benefit because He would ask His Father to send them, and by extension all those who would truly believe in Him, another “Comforter” or “Advocate” (parakleton) . This “Comforter” is, of course, the Holy Spirit whose descent upon the Apostles on the day of Pentecost, a traditional Jewish feast, is celebrated each year by the Church on the fiftieth day after Great and Holy Pascha. The Feast of Pentecost, which always falls on a Sunday, commemorates the empowerment and enlightening of the Apostles to preach the Gospel and the establishment of the Church through their preaching. It is also understood to be a profound revelation of the Holy Trinity and the complete divinity of the Holy Spirit. The Feast of Pentecost celebrates the fulfillment of the Lord’s pledge to his Apostles made at the Last Supper and also before His Ascension into Heaven that He would bestow the Holy Spirit upon them and then on the Church at large. This prom- ise was made and fulfilled because in light of the Savior’s physical absence from the earth His followers would need the Holy Spirit to recreate and realize His presence in themselves, the Church and in the world. Recognizing this truth the Orthodox Church, perhaps more than any other Christian denomination, places great emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit. It teaches that all Christians are called to be bearers, living temples, of the Holy Spirit. And, because the Church as a whole is the Body of Christ, the Church itself is understood to be a living temple of the Holy Spirit. The many roles of the Holy Spirit in each Christian’s life and in the life of the Church are far too profound and complex to be dealt with in a short article. However, a brief examination of some of the major aspects of the Holy Spirit’s ministry will be instructive in understanding the critical and indispensable part He plays in our salvation. First, it must be remembered that the Holy Spirit is one of the three eternal Persons of the Trinity sharing a common will with the Father and the Son and, therefore, equally initiates and participates in all the divine works of creation and salva- tion. Unlike the Son who is the image of the Father and the Spirit who is the image of the Son, the Person of the Holy Spirit has an elusive and hidden quality. We are aware of His might and presence but cannot easily picture Him. Reflecting this mysterious yet powerful quality of the Holy Spirit the Bible uses images of fire and wind to describe the nature and characteristics of the Paraclete. Second, it must be understand that although the Lord asked the Father to send The Holy Spirit to us it is The Holy Spirit who brings Christ to us by manifesting and forming Him within us. As the Lord said of the Spirit, “He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.” (John 16:14). A major function therefore of the Holy Spirit is to make Christ present in our hearts and minds and shape us into His image. He applies Christ’s work of salvation to each one of us individually by empowering us by His uncreated grace. Next, we must recall that the Holy Spirit is the “Spirit of truth” that would, as Christ promised, lead the Church into all truth (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit does this by revealing to us the truths of Holy See Page 6 ™∫∂æ∂π™ °π∞ ∆∏¡ ¶∂¡∆∏∫√™∆∏ ∫∞π ∆√ ∞°π√¡ ¶¡∂Àª∞ Ÿˆ˜ ¤¯ÂÈ Î·Ù·ÁÚ·Ê› ÛÙÔ ∂˘·ÁÁ¤ÏÈÔ ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ πˆ¿ÓÓË, Ô πËÛÔ‡˜, ÛÙÔ ª˘ÛÙÈÎfi ¢Â›ÓÔ, ÂÍ‹ÁËÛ ÛÙÔ˘˜ Ì·ıËÙ¤˜ ∆Ô˘ fiÙÈ, ·Ó Î·È ı· ˘¤ÊÂÚ ٷ ¶¿ıË ∆Ô˘, ı· ·Ó·ÛÙ·ÈÓfiÙ·Ó Î·È ÙÂÏÈο ı· ·ÓÂÚ¯fiÙ·Ó ÛÙÔÓ ¶·Ù¤Ú· ∆Ô˘, ‰ÂÓ ı· ÙÔ˘˜ ÂÁη٤ÏÂÈÂ. ∆Ô˘˜ ‰È·‚‚·›ˆÛ fiÙÈ, Ë ÙÂÏÈ΋ ·Ó·¯ÒÚËÛ‹ ∆Ô˘, ı· ‹Ù·Ó ÁÈ· ÙÔ ‰ÈÎfi ÙÔ˘˜ fiÊÂÏÔ˜, ÁÈ·Ù› ı· ˙ËÙÔ‡Û ·fi ÙÔÓ ¶·Ù¤Ú· ∆Ô˘ Ó· ÛÙ›ÏÂÈ Ûã·˘ÙÔ‡˜ ηÈ, ηÙã¤ÎÙ·ÛË, Û fiÏÔ˘˜, fiÛÔ˘˜ Ú·ÁÌ·ÙÈο ›ÛÙ¢·Ó Ûã∞˘ÙfiÓ, ¤Ó·Ó ¿ÏÏÔ «¶·ÚËÁÔÚËÙ‹», ‹ «ÀÂÚ·ÛÈÛÙ‹-™˘Ó‹ÁÔÚÔ», (¶·Ú¿ÎÏËÙÔ). √ «¶·ÚËÁÔÚËÙ‹˜» ·˘Ùfi˜ ›ӷÈ, Ê˘ÛÈο, ÙÔ ÕÁÈÔÓ ¶Ó‡̷, Ë ÂÈÊÔ›ÙËÛË ÙÔ˘ ÔÔ›Ô˘, ÙËÓ Ë̤ڷ Ù˘ ¶ÂÓÙËÎÔÛÙ‹˜, ‚ڷ˚΋˜ ·Ú·‰ÔÛȷ΋˜ ÁÈÔÚÙ‹˜, ÚÔ˜ ÙÔ˘˜ ∞ÔÛÙfiÏÔ˘˜, ÁÈÔÚÙ¿˙ÂÙ·È Î¿ı ¯ÚfiÓÔ ·fi ÙËÓ ∂ÎÎÏËÛ›· Ì·˜ ÙËÓ ÂÓÙËÎÔÛÙ‹ Ë̤ڷ ·fi ÙÔ ª¤Á· Î·È ÕÁÈÔ ¶¿Û¯·. ∏ ÂÔÚÙ‹ Ù˘ ¶ÂÓÙËÎÔÛÙ‹˜, Ô˘ ¿ÓÙ· Û˘Ì›ÙÂÈ ∫˘Úȷ΋, ÙÈÌ¿ ÙËÓ ÂÍÔ˘ÛÈÔ‰fiÙËÛË Î·È ‰È·ÊÒÙÈÛË ÙˆÓ ∞ÔÛÙfiÏˆÓ Ó· ÎËÚ‡ÍÔ˘Ó ÙÔ ∂˘·ÁÁ¤ÏÈÔ Î·È ÙËÓ ›‰Ú˘ÛË Ù˘ ∂ÎÎÏËÛ›·˜, ̤ۈ ÙÔ˘ ÎËÚ‡ÁÌ·Ùfi˜ ÙˆÓ. £ÂˆÚ›ٷÈ, ›Û˘, Û·Ó ÌÈ· ‚·ıÂÈ¿ ·ÔÎ¿Ï˘„Ë Ù˘ ∞Á›·˜ ∆ÚÈ¿‰Ô˜ Î·È Ù˘ Ï‹Ú˘ ıÂfiÙËÙ·˜ ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¶Ó‡̷ÙÔ˜. ∏ ÁÈÔÚÙ‹ Ù˘ ¶ÂÓÙËÎÔÛÙ‹˜ ·ÓËÁ˘Ú›˙ÂÈ ÙËÓ ÂÎÏ‹ÚˆÛË Ù˘ ˘fiÛ¯ÂÛ˘ ÙÔ˘ ∫˘Ú›Ô˘ ÚÔ˜ ÙÔ˘˜ ∞ÔÛÙfiÏÔ˘˜, Ô˘ ‰fiıËΠÛÙÔÓ ª˘ÛÙÈÎfi ¢Â›ÓÔ Î·ıÒ˜ Î·È ÚÈÓ ·fi ÙËÓ ∞Ó¿ÏË„‹ ∆Ô˘, fiÙÈ ‰ËÏ·‰‹, ı· ·¤ÓÂÌ ÙÔ ÕÁÈÔÓ ¶Ó‡̷ Ûã·˘ÙÔ‡˜ Î·È ÛÙË Û˘Ó¤¯ÂÈ·, ÛÙËÓ ∂ÎÎÏËÛ›· ÁÂÓÈÎÒÙÂÚ·. ∏ ˘fiÛ¯ÂÛË ·˘Ù‹ ‰fiıËÎÂ Î·È ÂÎÏËÚÒıËÎÂ, ÁÈ·Ù›, ÂÓ fi„ÂÈ Ù˘ Ê˘ÛÈ΋˜ ·Ô˘Û›·˜ ÙÔ˘ ™ˆÙ‹ÚÔ˜ ·fi ÙËÓ ÁË, ÔÈ ·ÎfiÏÔ˘ıÔ› ∆Ô˘ ›¯·Ó ÙËÓ ·Ó¿ÁÎË ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¶Ó‡̷ÙÔ˜ ÁÈ· Ó· ·Ó·‰ËÌÈÔ˘ÚÁ‹ÛÔ˘Ó Î·È Î·Ù·ÓÔ‹ÛÔ˘Ó Î·Ï¿ ÙËÓ ·ÚÔ˘Û›· ∆Ô˘ Ûã·˘ÙÔ‡˜ ÙÔ˘˜ ›‰ÈÔ˘˜, ÙËÓ ∂ÎÎÏËÛ›· Î·È ÙÔÓ ÎfiÛÌÔ. ªÂ ÙÔ Ó· ·Ó·ÁÓˆÚ›˙ÂÈ ÙËÓ ·Ï‹ıÂÈ· ·˘Ù‹, Ë √Úıfi‰ÔÍË ∂ÎÎÏËÛ›·, ÂÚÈÛÛfiÙÂÚÔ, ›Ûˆ˜, ·fi οı ¿ÏÏÔ ¯ÚÈÛÙÈ·ÓÈÎfi ‰fiÁÌ·, ‰›ÓÂÈ ÌÂÁ¿ÏË ¤ÌÊ·ÛË ÛÙÔ ¤ÚÁÔ ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¶Ó‡̷ÙÔ˜. ¢È‰¿ÛÎÂÈ fiÙÈ, fiÏÔÈ ÔÈ ÃÚÈÛÙÈ·ÓÔ› ηÏÔ‡ÓÙ·È Ó· Á›ÓÔ˘Ó ÊÔÚ›˜ Î·È ˙ˆÓÙ·ÓÔ› Ó·Ô› ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¶Ó‡̷ÙÔ˜. ∂Âȉ‹ Ë ∂ÎÎÏËÛ›·, ÛÙÔ Û‡ÓÔÏfi Ù˘, Â›Ó·È ÙÔ ÛÒÌ· ÙÔ˘ ÃÚÈÛÙÔ‡, Ë ∂ÎÎÏËÛ›· ·˘Ù‹ ηıã·˘Ù‹, ÂÓÓÔÂ›Ù·È fiÙÈ Â›Ó·È ¤Ó·˜ ˙ˆÓÙ·Ófi˜ Ó·fi˜ ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¶Ó‡̷ÙÔ˜. √È ÔÏÏ·ÏÔ› ÚfiÏÔÈ, ÙÔ˘˜ ÔÔ›Ô˘˜ ¤¯ÂÈ ÙÔ ÕÁÈÔ ¶Ó‡̷ ÛÙË ˙ˆ‹ ÙÔ˘ οı ¯ÚÈÛÙÈ·ÓÔ‡ Î·È ÛÙËÓ ˙ˆ‹ Ù˘ ∂ÎÎÏËÛ›·˜, Â›Ó·È Ôχ ‚·ı˘ÛÙfi¯·ÛÙÔÈ Î·È ÂÚ›ÏÔÎÔÈ, ÁÈ· Ó· ÌÔÚ¤ÛÔ˘Ì ӷ ÙÔ˘˜ ÂÍËÁ‹ÛÔ˘Ì Ûã¤Ó· ÌÈÎÚfi ¿ÚıÚÔ. °È· Ó· ηٷϿ‚ÔÌ fï˜ ÙÔ ÎÚ›ÛÈÌÔ Î·È ·Ó·ÓÙÈηٿÛÙ·ÙÔ ÚfiÏÔ, Ô˘ ·›˙ÂÈ ÙÔ ÕÁÈÔÓ ¶Ó‡̷ ÁÈ· ÙË ÛˆÙËÚ›· Ì·˜, ı· ‰ÒÛÔÌ ̛· Û‡ÓÙÔÌË, ‰È‰·ÎÙÈ΋ ÂͤٷÛË ÌÂÚÈÎÒÓ ÛËÌ·ÓÙÈÎÒÓ ·fi„ÂˆÓ Ù˘ ‰È·ÎÔÓ›·˜ ∆Ô˘. ¶ÚÒÙÔÓ, ı· Ú¤ÂÈ Ó· ı˘ÌfiÌ·ÛÙ fiÙÈ ÙÔ ÕÁÈÔÓ ¶Ó‡̷ Â›Ó·È ¤Ó· ·fi Ù· ÙÚ›· ·ÈÒÓÈ· ¶ÚfiÛˆ· Ù˘ ∞Á›·˜ ∆ÚÈ¿‰Ô˜. ™˘ÌÌÂÚ›˙ÂÙ·È ÙËÓ ›‰È· ÂÈı˘Ì›· Ì ÙÔÓ ¶·Ù¤Ú· Î·È ÙÔÓ ÀÈfi Î·È ÂÔ̤ӈ˜, ¤Íã›ÛÔ˘ ·Ú¯›˙ÂÈ Î·È Û˘ÌÌÂÙ¤¯ÂÈ Û fiÏ· Ù· ı›· ¤ÚÁ· Ù˘ ‰ËÌÈÔ˘ÚÁ›·˜ Î·È Ù˘ ÛˆÙËÚ›·˜. ∞ÓÙ›ıÂÙ· Ì ÙÔÓ ÀÈfi, Ô˘ Â›Ó·È Ë ÂÈÎfiÓ· ÙÔ˘ ¶·Ù¤Ú· Î·È Ì ÙÔ ¶Ó‡̷, Ô˘ Â›Ó·È Ë ÂÈÎfiÓ· ÙÔ˘ ÀÈÔ‡, ÙÔ ÚfiÛˆÔ ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¶Ó‡̷ÙÔ˜ ¤¯ÂÈ ÌÈ· ·Û‡ÏÏËÙË Î·È ÎÚ˘Ê‹ ÔÈfiÙËÙ·. °ÓˆÚ›˙ÔÌ ÙËÓ ‰‡Ó·ÌË Î·È ÙËÓ ·ÚÔ˘Û›· ∆Ô˘, fï˜ ‰ÂÓ ÌÔÚԇ̠‡ÎÔÏ· Ó· Û˘ÏÏ¿‚ÔÌ ÙËÓ ÂÈÎfiÓ· ∆Ô˘. ∏ ∞Á›· °Ú·Ê‹, ¤¯ÔÓÙ·˜ ˘ãfi„Ë, ÙËÓ Ì˘ÛÙ‹ÚÈ· ·ÏÏ¿ Î·È ‰˘Ó·Ù‹ ȉÈfiÙËÙ· ÙÔ˘ ∞Á›Ô˘ ¶Ó‡̷ÙÔ˜, ¯ÚËÛÈÌÔÔÈ› ÂÈÎfiÓ˜ ʈÙÈ¿˜ Î·È ·Ó¤ÌÔ˘ ÁÈ· Ó· ÂÚÈÁÚ¿„ÂÈ ÙËÓ Ê‡ÛË Î·È Ù· ¯·Ú·ÎÙËÚÈÛÙÈο ÙÔ˘ ¶·Ú¿ÎÏËÙÔ˘. ¢Â‡ÙÂÚÔÓ, ı· Ú¤ÂÈ Ó· Á›ÓÂÈ Î·Ù·ÓÔËÙfi fiÙÈ, ·Ó Î·È Ô ∫‡ÚÈÔ˜ ˙‹ÙËÛ ·fi ÙÔÓ ¶·Ù¤Ú· ∆Ô˘ Ó· ÛÙ›ÏÂÈ ÙÔ ÕÁÈÔÓ ¶Ó‡̷ Û ̷˜, ÙÔ ÕÁÈÔÓ ¶Ó‡̷ Â›Ó·È ÂΛÓÔ Ô˘ ʤÚÓÂÈ ÙÔ ÃÚÈÛÙfi Û µÏ¤Â ÛÂÏ›‰· 6 PAGE 2 PHAROS/º∞ƒO™ June/IÔ‡ÓÈÔ˜—2006 SAINT NICHOLAS — CHURCH AND SCHOOL Each Church Community is unique in its very own way; that quality which sets it apart and to which its communicants are drawn. Our beloved Saint Nicholas is unique throughout Maryland and surroundings in that the community adheres to the traditional practices of the motherland. This has been a natural outgrowth because our church was established in the area of southeast Baltimore inhabited by a concentration of Greek immigrants. Prior to the founding of Saint Nicholas, the only Greek Orthodox Church in Maryland was the Church of the Annunciation located in central Baltimore City. The Greek parents of Highlandtown, however, deemed in necessary that their children be educated in the Greek language and culture closer to home. This was accomplished by providing afternoon classes in the one-room schoolhouse built by the Church of the Annunciation on property at Ponca and Fleet Streets, the future site of our Saint Nicholas Church. The Highlandtown School, as it was known, became a center for the Greek youth, abuzz with activity five days a week; where the Greek language, religion, history, culture, song and dance were taught. At annual celebratory presentations for the entire Greek community given at the more spacious cultural center of the Annunciation the productions of the Highlandtown students shined, thanks to the diligence of excellent teachers and parents who were relentless in imparting and perpetuating their heritage to their children even in their newly-adopted country. Patriotism and honor of Greece served to instill and strengthen patriotism and love for America. The overriding spirit among the Greek families was devout dedication to their Orthodox faith and the promotion of education; holding to the hope that their children would excel in this land of opportunity through education. Is this not the reason that this “cradle of Hellenism” produced a high percentage of successful professionals? This thumbnail sketch may serve as background to the community which has evolved to our present Saint Nicholas Church. Although today’s community has grown in members, living beyond the confines of the immediate area, and is more structured in its ministries and activities, one aspect appears to have remained the same: the excellent afternoon Greek School program, literally the foundation of our Church. The names of the teachers and students may have changed, the physical atmosphere of the classrooms is enhanced, but the mission of the afternoon Greek School remains the same: to teach our present second and third generation GreekAmerican children their ethnic heritage. Teaching methods have improved and more class time is devoted to the teaching of culture and dance; our teachers have made class sessions more student-friendly. When attending the annual programs in which the students commemorate important events in the history of Greece as March 25th and October 28th, one is pleasantly reminded of similar presentations of bygone years. It is especially rewarding for the readers of the “Pharos” to get a glimpse of the accomplishments of our upper level students who share their thoughts with us each month written in their own words. We thank their teacher, Mrs. Eleni Monopolis, for her guidance and inspiration. It is our hope that students of the lower grades, Sunday School, as well as members of the G.O.Y.A. and Y.A.L. will also express their views with us because our youth is a vital part and the future of our community. The curriculum of the Saint Nicholas Greek School has been accredited by the Ministry of Education of Greece, it is not simply a superficial program. The Choir wishes to acknowledge those who generously donated funds toward our new robes: the Saint Nicholas Parish Community, Ladies Philoptochos Society of Saint Nicholas, Pan_Rhodian Society “Diagoras”, Macedonian Society, Mrs. Bessie Sfikas, Mrs Irene Tsambikos, Mrs. Eleni Bisbikis, Mrs. Despina Kaitis and Mrs. Irene Vavas, Mrs. Lea Karagiannopoulos and Mrs. Vaso Koumoudis, Mr. William and Mrs. Marie Poulos, Mrs. Maria Koutsonouris, Mrs. Athina Neofitou, Mrs. Fotini Anastasis, Mr. John & Mrs. Despina Glykiadis, Mr. George and Mrs. Rosa Cornias, Mr. Tony and Mrs. Calliope Cornias, Mrs. Panagiota Chrissomallis and Mrs. Metaxia Chrissomallis, Mrs. Helen Frapas and Anonymous. The Choir received a great surprise on the evening of Holy Saturday, just before the Anastasi service, when they found another new set of choir robes of maroon and gold in the choir room! The second set of choir robes was donated by the great generosity of one family - the family of Mr. John and Mrs. Joanna Zoulis. To the Zoulis Family and to all of the individuals and organizations that donated so generously to our choir robe fund drive, the Saint Nicholas Choir expresses its heartfelt thank you and wishes you many years of health, happiness, love and prosperity! George Rossis - Choir Director FESTIVAL Come One! Come All! Everyone is to come to the Annual Greek Folk Festival June 9, 10, and 11, 2006 from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. plus the Taverna nights. Bring your friends, your neighbors, your co workers to come and have a meal with you. Bring your kids, your parents, your grandparents to come and be with their fellow community members. Everyone is planning to have the best time of their life. So don’t miss out on this year’s Greek Festival. For more information call the church office at 410-633-5020. VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL We are pleased to announce that we will be having a Vacation Bible School for children ages 5 - 10 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, June 26, 27, and 28, 2006 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration fee is $15.00. For more information, speak with Fr. Manuel. Register ASAP, it is on a first come, first serve basis. SUMMER ATTENDANCE / SUNDAY SERMON Everyone is reminded to still attend church in the summer time. Even though we take off from school or work for a little while, doesn’t mean we take vacation away from God. God does’t take vacation away from us, why should we. Wherever you are in the United States or other parts of the world, there are Orthodox Churches. Search one out and go light a candle and pray. If you are here in Baltimore, it is essential to keep attending church for your spiritual welfare and growth. In addition, I wish to announce that the Sunday Sermon will be given immediately after the Gospel reading and everyone is to be in church by the Gospel reading. St. John Chrysostom in one of his sermons talks about how we all must be present for the reading of the Gospel, otherwise it is not counted that we attended church that day. In God’s Big Book of Life, for which I think He uses a huge computer now, He keeps a record of everything we do, but also everything we fail to do. A late mark after the Gospel reading is recorded as an absence. So please make sure you are in Church on time. That is why during the ancient Liturgy at one point when they said, The Doors , The Doors, ∆·˜ ı˘Ú·˜, ∆·˜ ı˘Ú·˜, the deacons would go and lock the doors, because only the faithful, no one who was a nonbeliever was allowed to be a part of the Anaphora, or the consecration of the gifts; it was such a holy and sacred moment that it was only reserved for those who truly believed. So let us make it to church on time. 10 a.m. 10 a.m. 10 a.m. is when the Liturgy starts, that has been the time for the past 54 years. Wishing everyone a good summer, and a spiritual summer as well. SATURDAY OF SOULS / PENTECOST The weekend of Saturday of Souls and Pentecost falls on the Festival weekend this year. Therefore, Church services will begin earlier on those days, which are Saturday, June 10 and Sunday June 11. Orthros is at 8 a.m. and Divine Liturgy at 9 a.m. Church will finish in time for the festival to open at 11 a.m. Thank you for your understanding. Also please remember that during the summer, church ends earlier since we do not have the choir singing with us. Church services will begin at 9 a.m. each Sunday, but will conclude by 11 a.m. GREEKTOWN CDC The Greektown CDC continues to hire off duty unif0rm Police on foot patrol in our community. They supplement the efforts of the Southeastern Police District. If you see a crime call 911. Community Dumpster Days have helped to keep our community clean. Please mark your calendars for the next dumpster days: June 3, July 22 and August 12. All are on Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. We encourage all our neighbors to pitch in and keep their community clean. Please put trash in trashcans and sweep your sidewalks and curbs. Call 311 to report neighbors who don’t. The Greektown CDC along with the Southeastern District Police Community Relations Council is proud to sponsor a community cookout on June 17, 2006 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. All Greektown residents are invited to gather at the corner of Bank and Lehigh Streets to enjoy hot dogs, drinks and snacks. Several units of the Baltimore City Police Department will be present to discuss public safety tips, provide demonstrations, and to meet with the residents. Please call John E. Gavrilis or Lori @ 410-327-3306, if you wish to volunteer. SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS Sunday, May 21st marked the end of another Church school year. We want to thank all of the students and especially the parents who made the effort to be here every Sunday so their son/ daughter can participate in the Divine Liturgy and attend the Sunday school lessons. At the closing ceremonies, the top students from each class were recognized. These students earned this honor due to their class attendance, knowledge of prayers, tests, class participation and Christian attitude and behavior. Special Congratulations went out to our 10th graders who graduated from Sunday school. We hope some of them will come back to help as aides and eventually as teachers. To our Graduates, you should never stop coming to church even though you have finished formal religious lessons. St. Nicholas and your Orthodox faith need each and every one of you. This past school year we were also fortunate to be represented at the District Level of the St. John Oratorical Festival which was held at St. Demetrios church by two senior level speakers: Markos Katsaros and Chrissy Cossis; and two junior level speakers: Vaso Katsaros and Theodore Sgouros. Congratulations to them for a job well done. Ke is Anotera. Which brings us to the answer to the question in the April issue of Pharos. The question was: There are Twelve Great Feasts that occupy an important position in the liturgical life of the Orthodox Church. Nine of them are fixed, three of them are moveable. Can you name them? Answer: The 9 fixed Feasts are: *Sept. 8th-The Birth of the Theotokos. *Sept. 14th- The Exaltation of the Cross *Nov. 21-The Entry of the Theotokos into the Temple *Dec.25th-The Birth of Jesus *Jan. 6th -The Baptism of Jesus *Feb. 2nd -The presentation of Jesus into the Temple *Mar 25th -The Annunciation of the Theotokos *Aug 6th - The Transfiguration of Jesus Christ *Aug. 15th - The Falling Asleep of the Theotokos. These are called fixed because the date never changes. However, the three moveable Feasts whose date changes, are: * Palm Sunday * The Ascension * Pentecost This year’s Oratorical Festival was devoted to one aspect of these Feasts that were associated with the life of Jesus and his mother, The Theotokos. You can find the services for these Feasts in one book called The Festal Menaion. If space permits, we would like to include one or two of the Oratorical speeches given by our four students who selected and made a presentation on one of these Feasts. Once again, we the Sunday school administration would like to extend our sincerest Thank You to all of our teachers and aides who volunteered their time to help teach our Orthodox Faith to our children. We look forward to having them return again in September. If you would like to volunteer as an aide or teacher, please contact the church office and leave your name and phone number so someone can get in touch with you. May all of parishioners have a happy and safe summer and God Bless you and your family and may we see you in church. Then, the Holy Spirit as the bearer of the many forms of spiritual gifts enables the faithful to personally understand and live out these great truths. Also, the Holy Spirit acts within the divine in- stitution of the Church to preserve both the truths of Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition. Finally, the Holy Spirit plays a major role in the liturgical life of the Church. He is invoked in each sacramental action performed by a priest most notably at the completion of the Eucharistic Prayer in the Divine Liturgy. The sacramental grace for sal- vation is made possible by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. This year as we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost and kneel during the prayers that call upon the Holy Spirit let us all meditate on His divine Person, power, gifts and blessings. By Bill Poulos SAINT NICHOLAS — CHURCH AND SCHOOL From page 2 well in learning Greek because of the dedication of teachers and parents, the support of the P.T.A., and the reinforcement within the community where the Greek language is spoken and the liturgical services are celebrated in Greek. These are the reasons that some parents travel for more than 30 minutes twice each week to bring their children to the school where 65 students are currently enrolled. They are rewarded in knowing that their children attain a valuable working use of Greek and an understanding of the culture of Greece. Following the model of the Saint Nicholas Greek School other neighboring ethnic communities have now initiated classes in which their language is taught. It is no wonder that the students and teach- ∞fi ÙËÓ ÛÂÏ›‰· 2 ers of our Greek School march proudly in the annual Greek Independence Day Parade! And so, our beloved Saint Nicholas community is unique in the Mid-Atlantic region not only because it was founded in a neighborhood of Greek immigrants, for many Greek Orthodox churches have had such a beginning, but because the continuous influx of Greek immigrants have maintained the Greek aspect of Orthodoxy through its priests and Greek School. The community has been fortunate in its 52 year history in having dedicated Greek American priests and personnel who have perpetuated the traditions and language of the Greek Orthodox Church. This distinction draws some worshippers from 40 mile distances passing several Greek Orthodox churches along the way. Another factor for the uniqueness of our community is our secretary, Ms. Maria Salpeas, who actually wears more hats than simply that of secretary. Her knowledge has enabled her to capably serve many of the needs of the parishioners during the last 25 years, making Saint Nicholas a true community church. As one parishioner aptly phrased it, “Maria is the glue that cements our community”! Just as the priests of the “secret schools” kept Orthodoxy and Hellenism alive during the centuries of Ottoman rule, the clergy and Greek School of Saint Nicholas are preserving them for us…in America in the 21st Century.
