Celebrating Our 16th Year of Publication!
DECEMBER, 2007
Christmas Message from Father Michael
“Your Nativity, O Christ, our God, shines forth light of Reason
over the earth for, in it, they who served the stars, were by a star
taught to adore You, the Sun of Truth, and to see You from the
heights of the East, O Lord, glory to You.”
The Christmas Season is here and—the song is sung, “It’s the
most wonderful time of the year.”
Christians all over the world prepare to celebrate the birth of
our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as the Christmas Season
approaches.
For centuries we have been celebrating the coming of life in its
fullest into the world, bringing with it the right to fullest of life
given by God in Christ to every human being. And yet, we are
aware today, perhaps more than ever that people everywhere still
are yearning for their God given right to this fullness of life.
With Christmas around the corner, everyone begins to plan for
that big event on the horizon (Christmas!).
In our Orthodox tradition we have a 40 day preparation season which begins November 15 (Advent). This season of preparation stresses fasting, prayer, meditation, forgiveness, giving of
oneself to help another, (Christian fellowship stewardship) ad etc.
During this time of the year, we tend to concentrate on the non
essential factors of the celebration instead of truly preparing ourselves spiritually for the Lord. We realize today that commercialism has played a great role in the interference or the spiritual happiness that we experience during this Sacred Holiday.
I really don’t think that back then during the time of Christ’s
birth - that everyone was going out to the stores to buy gifts and
also to certain entertainment places to celebrate the birth of
Christ.
This is a spiritual celebration meaning that our focus as Christians during the Lenten Season should be on Christ and nothing
else.
Today we have so many parties, so many get togethers, we
spend hours, days and months preparing for this ordeal, and none
of these preparations include the true celebration of Christ’s birth.
We’ve gone away from the idea of caring for Christ, to the idea of
caring for our own pleasures and satisfaction of ourselves.
We buy gifts to exchange with others, with our loved ones, relatives and friends, but we forget that out there, there are thousands

Christmas Message from Father Michael
Continued from page one
of people who are less fortunate and don’t have the opportunity
and the luxury to celebrate the birth of Christ like we do.
As concerns the commercialism of Christmas, it is not bad to
give gifts, for after all, Christ’s birth was a gift to us. The Wisemen
offered their gifts to Jesus.
The problem comes when we only stress the gifts and in particular when we only think about the gifts that we receive. Even
the concept of “exchanging gifts” is weird when you think of our
Lord’s teachings: “It is better to give than to receive.”
Most of the time the one gift that we forget to give to Jesus is
ourselves. Many of us forget to give the Church, a Christmas Gift.
That should be our first priority, we always think and calculate
what each of our family members would want. Christmas, we
spend thousands of dollars to make them secure and satisfied,
thinking that this is the way to show our appreciation and love,
but for Christ, not only we do not think of Him, we do not even
attend the Christmas Services that were scheduled, or we do not
even do that small task of responsibility that we at least owe Him
for what He has done for us.
My brothers and sisters in Christ, you must ask yourself why is
it the most wonderful time of the year.
DECEMBER / ¢∂∫∂ªµƒπO™—2007
Is it for the Department Stores—they suck in the money). Is it
for the material gifts that we receive (they come and go.).
Christmas gives us the opportunity to commemorate and focus in on the birth of Christ. Our celebration of His incarnation is
not limited to a feast of celebration once a year, with all its festivities.
We are Orthodox Christians living in a New Orthodox environment. Let us plan ahead correctly this Holiday Season and let
us set our minds and our hearts to what is important for our souls
and not our bodies. I urge each of you to prepare for and live
Christmas in the true Orthodox Spirit. Let us all celebrate Christmas the way we celebrate PASCHA, first with a sincere preparation for the Holy Eucharist. Second, we should all, young and old,
come to worship Christ as a family during the Christmas Liturgy
on Christmas Eve and receive the Holy Eucharist with your family members, and then we can truly celebrate the real Nativity of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
May you enjoy the riches of God’s graces during this Christmas—tithe and abundance of His blessings during the New Year.
Merry Christmas to all!
With Love in our Incarnate Lord,
Fr. Michael Pastrikos

Reflections on Saint Nicholas, the Wonder Worker
By Bill Poulos Th.M.
St. Nicholas is one of the most revered saints in both the Orthodox and Latin Churches. His feast was being celebrated just
two centuries after his death during the reign of the Emperor Justinian who built a church in his honor at Constantinople. Since that
time it has been estimated that thousands of churches, chapels and
monasteries have been dedicated to him around the world. His
patronage includes children, sailors, fishermen, the falsely accused,
merchants, pawnbrokers and many cities.
Surprisingly, although he is one of the most honored and venerated saints to whom countless miracles have been attributed,
very little is historically certain about him except that he was
Bishop of Myra in the 4th Century. Most of the traditional details
about his life emerged during the Middle Ages. St. Methodius of
Constantinople, who, in the 9th century, wrote arguably the most
reliable and influential life of St. Nicholas noted at the time that
the majority of the faithful knew nothing of the great saint’s life.
It is highly probable, therefore, that St. Methodius relied primarily
on tradition and legend to produce his account of St. Nicholas.
These traditional details of St. Nicholas’ life that have survived
and resonated in Christian hearts for centuries after his death are a
powerful testimony to the impression and influence the holy hierarch must have had on those who were privileged to have him living and ministering among them. Much can be learned from a
brief examination of his life that can instruct and guide us in our
daily walk with Christ and our struggles to obey and serve Him as
He would have us.
St. Nicholas was born in Patara of Lycia to wealthy and influential parents who died when he was a young man. After their
deaths he resolved to devote his considerable inheritance to works
of charity and was soon attracted to the monastic life. Subsequently, he made a pilgrimage to Egypt and Palestine. Shortly
after his return he was elevated to Bishop of Myra and became
widely known for his ascetism, piety and acts of kindness. He was
imprisoned and tortured during the persecutions of Emperors
PAGE 3
Diocletian and Maximian and released after the accession of St.
Constantine.
St. Nicholas was an ardent defender of the faith against the
Arian heresy and it is reputed, though unproven, that he was
present at the 1st Ecumenical Council at Nicea in 325. There, he
is said to have struck Arius and was expelled by the Council Fathers for his action.
Among the most famous stories about him are his anonymously giving three bags of gold to three girls as dowry to save
them from prostitution; the deliverance of three wrongly accused
prisoners from execution; the raising from the dead of three murdered children; the saving of the residents of Myra from famine;
the rescue of drowning sailors and the destruction of several pagan temples.
He died at Myra in Lycia on Dec 6, sometime between 345 and
352. In 1087 Italian merchants stole his relics from Myra and
brought them to Bari, Italy, where they remain to this day. A
sweet smelling myrrh with miraculous powers is said to proceed
from them.
What do these brief glimpses into the great saint’s life reveal to
us about him and how to live a truly Christian life? One luminous
truth about St. Nicholas in particular shines through the many centuries to enlighten us. He was a living bearer of the Holy Spirit
who humbly and tirelessly obeyed and embodied his Master’s two
greatest commandments that we should, , “love the Lord God with
all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind”, and
“love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mat 22:37-39).
His life demonstrates a fearless devotion and love for Christ
and the truth of the Gospel as well as constant selfless and compassionate service to those suffering and in need. We would certainly please our Lord if we would emulate Him.
Perhaps this is why Saint Nicholas is a Wonderworker. The
Lord, we may respectfully assume, finds it exceptionally pleasing
to grant the intercessory requests of one who loves Him and his
fellow human beings so purely and fervently.

DECEMBER / ¢∂∫∂ªµƒπO™—2007
The Meaning of Christmas: Humility, Love
µy Eve Lallas
Decorated Christmas trees have been on display in retail stores
since early September along with advertisements for various holiday items. By the time the Holy Day of Christmas arrives we
probably will have been supersaturated with festive music, foods,
and parties. Such is what the commercial aspect of Christmas has
become; at times seeming to overshadow the sanctity of the holiday: the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The questions
remain: Have we abandoned the core meaning of Christmas?
What does this day mean? to the world at large? to Christians? to
Orthodox Christians in particular? to each of us personally?
Imagine the state of humanity prior to Christ’s birth: a world
of fallen morals, disobedience to God’s Commandments; and yet
God did not forsake us, His beloved children. Once again, as our
loving Father, He did not lose patience with us but sent His only
begotten Son to save us from our sinful ways, thus bringing us
closer to Him.
Christ showed us the way toward salvation by example. The
first lesson He taught us was that of Humility. It was by no accident that He was born in a manger surrounded by farm animals,
not in a royal palace of worldly splendor befitting the kings of the
day. Christ continued to live a humble life, being charitable and
leaving egotism to others, as He walked among ordinary folk
preaching His message of Love. He selected average men as His
Disciples, not well-to-do men of “stature”, to follow Him and
continue His ministry.
Living among them, Jesus taught and inspired them to spread
His doctrines, the greatest of which is Love: loving and caring for
our fellow man in the same manner in which we care for ourselves
and turning the other cheek when someone has wronged us. He
delivered this rather revolutionary message in the midst of a tumultuous world. Thus, during His brief life on earth, Christ influenced and drastically changed the world; even though civilization
has often regressed during the last 2,000 years forgetting our
Master’s core message of Love. Let us imagine, however, the
disintegrating state of our world if Christ had not been delivered
to us and humanity had continued in that morally corrupt downward spiral.
We Christians have received the Light, have been shown, and
have accepted the path to follow for our salvation; we are aware
of the difference between right and wrong. Following Christ’s
teachings, living a truly Christian life, however, is a difficult task,
but we can continually strive to stay on the straight and narrow
path. As Orthodox Christians we know that when we fail we can
regain our journey on the path of righteousness by sincerely repenting, asking forgiveness, and mending our wayward behavior.
The world at large, Christians as a whole, Orthodox Christians
in particular, and each of us personally have been transformed on
that first Christmas Day. How then can we Orthodox Christians
allow commercialism to distract and possibly obliterate the day
that brought us the True Light and the means to our salvation?
How can we allow ourselves to be sidetracked by Santas arriving at shopping malls early in November prior to the beginning of Lent? How can we spend hours decorating with bright
lights and candles but forget that Christmas lights symbolize the
coming of Jesus, the Light of the World?
How can we allow political correctness to dictate the elimination of the word Christmas from public school programs and vacations by substituting the word “winter”? How can we become
consumed in numerous hours of shopping for the “perfect” gift
and forget that gift-giving is the Christian tradition commemorating the greatest gift God gave us: the Christchild! As Orthodox
Christians how can we allow ourselves to be drawn into the frenzy
of pre-holiday galas ignoring the religious services, bible study,
and abstinence which help to acclimate our spirit to the earthly
arrival of our Lord to be followed by the twelve days of celebration which enrich the joy of Christmas? On a personal level, the
physical preparations of our homes for Christmas should merely
enhance our anticipation of our King’s arrival; they should not
take priority over our spiritual preparation for His birth.
Thus, for us Orthodox Christians, Advent serves to guide and
support each of us by keeping us focused in readying our hearts
for the joys of Christmas, the day that illuminated our world. As
believers in Christ our God, celebrating Christmas Day by first
attending the Liturgy to thank and praise God reminds each of us
that He is the essence of our being.
Wishing you a Blessed and
Merry Christmas!

STEWARDSHIP 2008
-
The Stewardship Committee extends a heartfelt thank you to
all who made Stewardship Sunday a huge success, including Rose
Tsakalos for the delicious luncheon and the United Chios Society
for the pastries. It was moving to hear sincere expressions of
gratitude for our St. Nicholas Community especially from our
youngsters. If you have not yet submitted your 2008 Pledge Card,
please do so during this month as St. Nicholas is depending on
YOU. In keeping with the harvest season, this is a fitting time to
thank God for the richness of the bounty He has bestowed upon
us.

PROPER CHURCH ETIQUETTE
One of the most important obligations that we have as worshippers attending the Divine Liturgy, is to maintain proper decorum so that all of the members of the Congregation may pray
sincerely, peacefully and meaningfully. It is with this fact in mind
that we set forth the following guidelines:
Upon entering the Church, at all times, but especially during Services, an individual should remember that he or she is in the House
of God. Reverence and good manners are required so as not to
disturb those who are already engaged in prayer, but even more
importantly, as an expression of sincere faith and awareness of
the presence of the Lord. No irrelevant conversations should take
place, either in the Narthex or any other part of the Church. No
chewing gum is permitted in Church. Proper attire is expected
for men and women.
There are various parts of the Liturgy during which no one should
be moving about. Wherever a person happens to be at these
moments, he or she should stop and stand reverently, until the
proper time to proceed to the pew. These parts of the Liturgy
are:
1. During the Procession of the Priest and the Altar Boys
with the Holy Gospel.
2. During the reading of the EPISTLE and the Gospel.
3. During the SERMON.
4. During the CHERUBIC HYMN and the Procession
of the Priest and the Altar Boys with the Holy Gifts.
5. During the recitation of the CREED (in which the
whole Congregation should participate).
6. During the SE YMNOUMEN and the prayers of
the Consecration of the Holy Gifts.
7. During the LORD’S PRAYER (in which the
whole Congregation should participate).
8. During HOLY COMMUNION.
9. During the Dismissal Prayers.
10. During any special Services (Memorial Services,
Processions, Special Prayers, e.t.c.)
PAGE 5
∫Oπ¡O∆π∫∞ ¡∂A
One basic rule to follow is that, whenever the Priest is outside of
the Altar either with the Censer or giving the Blessing, everyone
should stand wherever they are.
According to actual Church Service procedures, each and every member of the Congregation is required to be seated in the
pews at the beginning of the Service. It is only by leniency that
anyone is allowed to enter the Church once the Services have
begun. Thus, we ask that you do not take undue advantage of this
leniency. Also Liturgy Books are available in the pews to follow
the service.
Please remember that the Parish Council members are required to maintain order during Church Services. Thank you for
following their direction.

THE LADIES PANCHIAN SOCIETY
The Ladies Panchian Society “Chios” is asking for your help.
Four months ago, Stefanos Liparos from Lithi, Chios, was diagnosed with terminal leukemia. He is in his 30’s, married with one
year old little girl and another on the way.
The family is in desperate need of assistance. He spends most
of his time in Athens for treatment while his wife commutes back
and forth to Athens. With the high medical costs the family is in
financial trouble.
The Ladies Panchian Society has started an account, which will
be open through the end of the year. We ask all fellow Chians and
non-Chians to donate whatever they can. Please make your
checks payable to the Ladies Panchian Society and mail to 337
South Lehigh Street, Baltimore Maryland 21224. Please make
sure to write Stefanos Liparos in the the memo area. We extend
our deepest appreciation to everyone.

Greektown CDC
A MESSAGE FROM JOHN E. GAVRILIS, CEO
Greektown is currently undergoing several capital improvement projects; the Eastern Avenue underpass, Streetscape and
Athena Square. We ask everyone to be patient during the construction process. We have been waiting many years for development to happen in Greektown, now we can finally see the fruits
of our efforts. These improvements will assist in our
community’s economic well being.
As we see physical change happening throughout Greektown,
now is the time for the Community to work together. We are
proud to have had a good turnout at the most recent Greektown
CDC Community Meeting and the community cleanup. We urge
all of our residents to get more involved. Please mark your calendars for a Community clean up on December 8, 2007. A
dumpster will be placed at the 700 block of Quail Street from 9am
to 1pm. Please do not dump trash in the street if the dumpster is
full! The next Greektown CDC Community Meeting will be
January 15, 2008, 6pm, at Saint Nicholas Church in the small hall.
Please remember to dial 311 for all non-police related emergencies such as sanitation, housing violations and city maintenance needs. It only takes one minute out of your day to help
keep this neighborhood beautiful. We also remind our residents
to dial 911 for all criminal offenses, to include loitering, trespassing, and drug dealing. All phone calls remain confidential.
The Greektown CDC wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas
and Happy New Year!
If you are interested in helping monitor the CCTV cameras at
the Southeast District Police, please call John Gavrilis or Jason
Filippou at 410-327-3306.
Believe in your community!

Greetings and Wishes from Father Michael and Family
Christmas gives us the opportunity to commemorate and focus on the birth of our Lord. The presence of the Divine word is
manifested only within the Church and in the person of Jesus
Christ.
My sincere prayer to all of my parishioners as we approach this
most Holy Day is that families and friends love one another and
forgive one another. May each of you reach out and accept the
most blessed and eternal gift we could ever receive: the salvation
PAGE 9
of our souls, which our Heavenly Father offers us through His
Son, Jesus Christ, because of His love for us all.
I would like to express on behalf of myself, Presbytera Toula,
and my family a great big thank you for the love and respect that
you have shown to me and my family in the last few months. We
send our sincere best wishes to everyone in the Parish for a Joyous and fruitful Christmas, and a very prosperous and healthy
New Year.
May God Bless!
