biglietto prima del 15 Gennaio paga $75.00; dopo
questa data il prezzo è di $85.00.

Il parallelo tra il battesimo di Gesù e il nostro battesimo di
per sé non è esatto. Noi infatti siamo battezzati (immersi)
nella morte e nella risurrezione di Gesù, non nel Giordano.
Però il nome stesso della festa ci spinge a riflettere sul
nostro battesimo.
Ci si preoccupa molto della frequenza dei battezzati alla
messa della domenica. Giustamente! Perché la messa della
domenica è un indicatore della fedeltà al battesimo.
La vita cristiana infatti non può reggere senza il suo
nutrimento.
Però se la partecipazione alla messa e alle attività
parrocchiali non corrispondesse a una vita vissuta "da figli
amati dal padre", allora sì che ci si dovrebbe preoccupare.
E infatti ci si deve preoccupare. E molto!
Il passaggio dalla vita privata alla missione pubblica di Gesù
è segnato dall'evento del Battesimo, che i Vangeli
descrivono come dato certo nella zona meridionale del
fiume Giordano, luogo in cui Giovanni, chiamato il
Battista, durante una lunga predicazione alla conversione,
sta amministrando il battesimo in acqua per la conversione
dei peccatori.
Chi si avvicinava a Giovanni si mostrava convinto del
proprio peccato, intendeva ravvedersi dalla propria
condotta, optare per un serio emendamento di vita e
ottenere il perdono da Dio.
Perché Gesù vuole essere asperso dell'acqua battesimale
che indica la conversione dei peccatori, se lui peccatore non
è mai stato? Come mai vuole ricevere il battesimo se, come
si capisce anche nei vangeli, egli non si è mai accusato né si
accuserà mai di colpa alcuna davanti a Dio? L'interrogativo
è pertinente, soprattutto perché aiuterà a definire la
differenza fra il battesimo impartito da Giovanni e quello
che istituirà poi lo stesso Signore Risorto e occorre offrire
una spiegazione esauriente.
"Realizzare ogni giustizia e ottemperare
inderogabilmente alla volontà del Padre."
Questa volontà è senza dubbio che tutti gli uomini si
salvino dopo essersi riconciliati con Dio, che ottengano il
perdono dei peccati per il raggiungimento della salvezza.
C'è un'altro motivo che non è da meno: Gesù si lascia
battezzare perché, pur essendo senza peccato, vuole
condividere lo stato di precarietà di tutti i peccatori,
associarsi alle loro ansie, fare propri i loro sentimenti, le
angosce e le preoccupazioni, come pure la loro aspirazione
a guadagnare la comunione con Dio.
Gesù, lui che è Dio Incarnato, non disdegna di convivere
con i peccatori, ma appunto perché essi sono tali manifesta
di prediligere la loro compagnia rendendosi loro compagno
e amico, comunicando con essi facendosi loro pari e
soprattutto identificandosi, pur non essendolo, con
ciascuno di essi in questo umile atto di sottomissione che è
il lavacro di conversione operato dal Battista.
Gesù ci raggiunge tutti fino in fondo nella misura in cui
siamo disposti a riconoscere il nostro peccato, per quanto
grande esso sia, e a deciderci per una radicale svolta nella
nostra vita; egli è il compagno di viaggio, non l'impartitore
di ordini e di disposizioni. Cammina accanto a noi mentre
rechiamo sulle spalle il peso e la difficoltà che
inesorabilmente il peccato stesso comporta, ci risolleva
nelle pene e nelle sconfitte che esso ci procura e ci
incoraggia a perseverare nella ricerca della giustizia e del
bene con noi stessi, con Dio e con gli altri.
Le nostre celebrazioni battesimali, che riguardano nella
maggior parte dei casi i bambini appena nati, sono spesso
caratterizzate dal ritualismo di una mera consuetudine il cui
significato è estraneo ai genitori e ai padrini del
battezzando, che molte volte sono anche refrattari nel
volerlo accogliere e assimilare: pur di realizzare una
funzione in chiesa a cui faccia seguito un pranzo in
ristorante, si è disposti ad affrontare le "chiacchiere di un
sacerdote" o di un catechista nell'incontro previo di
preparazione. Senza contare poi la triste realtà di fatto che
molte famiglie trascurano di impartire al bambino
battezzato un'educazione conforme al Vangelo e alla
dottrina cristiana, come vogliono gli impegni stessi di
genitori e padrini.
Non ci si rende conto tuttavia che un simile atteggiamento
di indifferenza e di ritrosia costituisce un'occasione
mancata, perché ci distoglie dal privilegio che Cristo ci
concede di partecipare di se stesso e della sua missione, di
essere insomma vincolati a lui come il tralcio alla vite.
Un'occasione mancata verso noi stessi.

FROM THE GOSPEL Mk 1, 7-11
We receive Baptism as one of the Sacraments of Initiation
into God’s life, the other Sacraments of Initiation being
Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. Baptism is the primal
Sacrament. In it we are initiated into the life of God.
Related to Baptism is the question of why God sent His
Son to us. Some Christians emphasize that God sent His
Son to us to save us from our sins. They pretty much stop
there. But as important as it is to us that Christ saves us
from our sins, there is more.
For us as Catholics the important thing is that God has
come to us in Jesus Christ to share His very own life with
us. As Catholics, we encounter God and receive His life
into our lives in the Seven Sacraments. We are integrated
into and become an integral part of the Mystical Body of
the risen Christ. This is so that God’s intention to live in
union with us can be met. God loves us and wants to share
His life with us and become totally a part of how we live, in
all that we think, say and do. Baptism is a rite of initiation,
in which and through which we enter into a way of living.
Baptism gives you a new identity. You have a name in the
family of God, the name given to you when you are
baptized. God calls you by name and uniquely identifies
you in who you are. You have a heavenly Father, a Father
who is our Father, not just your father. Baptism is
incorporation into the family of Jesus. Regardless of any
difficulties we may have had in relating to our natural,
earthly fathers, we need to get into deeper touch with our
Father in heaven. No matter what emotional distance may
exist between our earthly fathers and us, God our Father in
heaven wants us to be intimate with him. He wants us to
know him, to love him, and to be close to him. He wants
us to work with Him to bring His creation into completion.
Baptism isn’t just a pretty ceremony that is perhaps a part
of our family’s tradition. We don’t bring our newborn to
church and have them baptized simply to please our
parents and our grandparents. Nor is it something that is of
a momentary character, as if everything happens when
we’re baptized. No. Baptism is an initiation into a way of
living, an inauguration into a lifetime adventure in which
we try to live God and with others in specific ways.
Being compassionate, considerate and caring is not a part
of the world in which we live. Being gentle, mild, and
self-restrained is definitely not the way of this world and
the culture that surrounds us. Being self-sacrificing is
something that this world regards as heroic and rare, not
normal and every day.
Jesus Christ began His public life when He accepted John
the Baptist’s baptism in the river Jordan. Rising up out of
those waters He was anointed by God’s Holy Spirit and
shortly thereafter Jesus went back to His own hometown
and to its synagogue. There on a Sabbath He stood up to
read, “and they handed Him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah.
Unrolling the scroll He found the place where it is written: The spirit
of the Lord has been given to me; for he has anointed me. He has sent
me to bring the good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and
to the blind new sight, to set the downtrodden free, to proclaim the
Lord’s year of favor.”
Then He began to speak to them saying, “This text is being
fulfilled today even as you listen.” This was His initiation into
His life among us; it inaugurated a life that led to suffering,
crucifixion and death. But it was followed by resurrection
into God’s life in heaven.
Baptism is our initiation into Christ’s life; our inaugurating
a way of living that is rejected by this world. If we would
walk in His way and life in His truth, we must live His life
and has everything to do with living the life God has
empowered us and called us to live. Fear is experienced in
the absence of faith. No faith, no God. Baptism, however,
puts us forever in the love of God and because of that we
have nothing to fear because ultimately, no matter what
happens to us in life, we will live forever in the caring love
of God to whom we belong.
