I materiali reperiti on line(opinioni,
In classe o a casa
3
indicazioni suggerite dalle apposite icone.
LE ICONE PRESENTI NEL VOLUME PER LO STUDENTE
(1)
(2)
(3)
(4)
Per far conoscere Londra e New York propone 19 micro filmati a tema

EDUCATION IN GERMANY
Hi, my name’s Marlene Hildebrand, I’m 21 years old and I want to tell you about my school experience. When I
was three years old I went to a kindergarten called St Pankratius in Iserlohn, near Dortmund. I stayed there for three
years. We played a lot and had fun in our gym classes.
When I was six I went to an elementary school called Grundschule im Wiesengrund, where I learned how to read,
write and count. In Germany, elementary school takes four years. At the end, teachers decide which school is the best
for you based on your final report. If you have very good marks you can go to the Gymnasium or the Realschule,
otherwise you can go to the Hauptschule.
I went to the Gymnasium an der Stenner where I studied for nine years. Of course you do not have to attend all the
nine years, you can leave school after the 10th grade.
If you leave school before the 10th year, you don’t get the Abitur, the highest diploma you can get in Germany. I
attended school until the 13th grade, and did my Abitur which allows me to continue my studies.
The last three years (from 11th to 13th grade) of Gymnasium were the most interesting part of my schooltime. I took
both optional and obligatory subjects: I took classes in German, French, Maths and Religion. I worked hard and I
received quite a good Abitur at the end. And now? Well, after I received the “Abi” (that’s how we always refer to
it), I went to Berlin where I now live and study. But I still like to remember my time at school, in which I received a
good education, and which was filled with unforgettable experiences.

THE THIRD MILLENNIUM CINEMA
Technology and science have developped tremendously in the last few years, and the movie industry has benefited
from these great advantages. Modern cameras and computers create so many special effects that the movie set has
become the centre of all sorts of spectacular events, stunts and disasters. Extraordinary creatures of the imagination
like monsters and fairies, wizards and witches, elves and goblins, aliens and robots, have been created.
Thanks to modern technology anything can happen and seem real!
Science-fiction films such as Avatar (leading actors Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana) and digital-animation films
like Shrek Forever After have been highly appreciated.
In the last few years, films based on historical or mithological events, such as Chi Bi have also won great success.
Speaking of remakes we mustn’t fail to mention Robin Hood (played by Russel Crowe) and Tim Burton’s amazing version of Alice in Wonderland, starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Mia Wasikowska.
In this early third millennium a lot of movies have become famous through the world of magic and by use of special
effects. Two novels, adapted into the language of images, have done better than others and have become worldwide
blockbusters: the third and fourth episodes of the “Twilight” saga: Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.

SPORTS
Sports play a fundamental role in both physical and psychological development of the child, especially at an early
age. In addition, sports create opportunities that teach children to rely on partners, to play together, and, especially
for ill-behaved children who lack self-control, to respect the rules of the game.
SPORTS IN ITALY
Professional athletes are heroes in Italy, and they earn very high salaries for their performances. Sport related activities are also a huge business, but in spite of all the money spent on sporting events, Italians prefer to stay at home and
sit in their comfortable armchairs rather than exercise. On Saturdays and Sundays, the majority of TV programmes are
devoted to sports, and Italians spend their free time watching soccer matches on TV without actually participating in
any sport whatsoever. This situation, however, is slowly changing, but even though there is an increasing number of
people who spend hours keeping fit and exercising, spectator sports are still the most popular ones in Italy.
Read through the two texts above then answer the following questions.
1.
Why is sport important? ......................................................................................................................................

DREAMS
Our dreams are about the things we would like to have, or the events we would like to happen. Most young people
dream of becoming rich and famous. An expensive car, a beautiful house, a successful career are some of the most
common dreams. My father dreams that I will get a good job. My mother wants my boyfriend to be loyal, friendly
and affectionate.
Teenage boys dream of becoming successful footballers. Teenage girls usually dream of becoming actresses, or
famous singers or dancers. That’s why TV programmes introducing talented young people into the world of show
business are a huge success.
I too like singing and acting very much. As a child I took part in a number of school dramas in which I tried to do
my best. They were unforgettable! I’m older now and my dreams have changed over the years. I don’t dream of
becoming a famous star anymore.
My dream is to fulfil myself. I don't exactly know how, but it would be nice to become a good doctor, engineer, or
lawyer. I hope I can be good at the job I choose. If I am good, I would feel proud of and confident about what I have
chosen to do.

BEDROOM IN ARLES
Read through Van Gogh’s letter to his brother Theo and colour the drawing below as the painter suggests.
“This time it simply reproduces my bedroom; but colour must be abundant... to suggest a certain rest or dream.
I have painted the walls pale violet. The ground with checked material.
The wooden bed and the chairs, yellow like fresh butter; the sheet and the pillows, lemon light green. The bedspread,
scarlet coloured. The window, green. The washbasin, orange; the tank, blue.
The doors, lilac. And, that is all. There is not anything else in this room with closed shutters.
The square pieces of furniture must express unswerving rest; also the portraits on the wall, the mirror, the bottle,
and some costumes. The white colour has not been applied to the picture, so its frame will be white, aimed to get
me even with the compulsory rest recommended for me.
I have depicted no type of shade or shadow; I have only applied simple plain colours, like those in crepes.”

William Blake
William Blake, born in 1757, was one of the major lyrical
poets. He was a rebel and expressed his Romantic ideals
through his poetry. He was against industrialization, reason and science, rules and conventions as they imprison
man’s freedom. In 1783 he published Poetical Sketches
and in 1789 he published Songs of Innocence, where he
contemplated love, purity, and beauty and used a very
simple language. In 1794 he published Songs of Experience, where he expressed the contrast between good and
evil and used a more serious style.
NURSE’S SONG
(from: Songs of Innocence, William Blake)
When the voices of children are heard on the green
And laughing is heard on the hill
My heart is at rest within my breast
And every thing else is still.
Then come home my children the sun is gone down
and the dews of night arise;
Come, come, leave off play, and let us away
Till morning appears in the skies.
“No, no, let us play for it is yet day
And we cannot go to sleep;
Besides, in the sky the little birds fly
And the hills are all covered with sheep.
“Well, well, go and play till the light fades away
And then go home to bed”
The little ones leaped and shouted and laughed
And all the hills echoed.

Extract 2
Piggy and Ralph arrive at the place where the other boys (except from Simon) are having a
party. Here is the description of the place and the party.
Long before Ralph and Piggy came up with Jack’s lot, they could hear the party.
There was a stretch of grass in a place where the palms left a wide band of turf
between the forest and the shore. Just one step down from the edge of the turf was
the white, blown sand of above high water, warm, dry, trodden. Below that again
was a rock that stretched away towards the lagoon. Beyond was a short stretch of
sand and then the edge of the water. A fire burned on the rock and fat dripped from
the roasting pig-meat into the invisible flames. All the boys of the island, except
Piggy, Ralph, Simon, and the two tending the pig, were grouped on the turf. They
were laughing, singing, lying, squatting, or standing on the grass, holding food in
their hands. But to judge by the greasy faces, the meat-eating was almost done;
and some held coconut shells in their hands and were drinking from them. Before
the Party had started a great log had been drugged into the centre of the lawn, and
Jack painted and garlanded, sat there like an idol. There were piles of meat on green
leaves near him, and fruit, and coconut shells full of drink.

Ralph and Piggy decide to join the group.
At this moment the boys who were cooking at the fire suddenly hauled off a great
chunk of meat and ran with it towards the grass. They bumped Piggy who was burnt,
and yelled and danced. Immediately, Ralph and the crowd of boys were united and
relieved by a storm of laughter. Piggy once more was the centre of social derision,
so that everyone felt cheerful and normal.
Jack stood up and waved his spear.
“Take them some meat.” The boys with the spit gave Ralph and Piggy each a succulent chunk. They took the gift, dribbling. So they stood and ate beneath a sky of
thunderous brass that rang with the storm-coming.
Jack waved his spear again.
“Has everybody eaten as much as they want?”
There was still food left, sizzling on the wooden spits, heaped on the green platters. Betrayed by his stomach, Piggy threw a picked bone down on the beach and
stooped for more.
Jack spoke again, impatiently.
“Has everybody eaten as much as they want?”
His tone conveyed a warning, given out of the pride of ownership, and the boys
ate faster while there was still time. Seeing there was no immediate likelihood of a
pause, Jack rose from the log that was his throne and sauntered to the edge of the
grass. He looked down from behind his paint at Ralph and watched the fire as he
ate. He noticed without understanding, how the flames were visible now against the
dull light. Evening was come, not with calm beauty but with the threat of violence.
Jack spoke.
“Give me a drink.”
Henry brought him a shell and he drank, watching Piggy and Ralph over the jagged
rim. Power lay in the brown swell of his forearms: authority sat on his shoulder
and chattered in his ear like an ape.

Jack turns the boys fear of the beast and the storm to his advantage and enacts a ritual dance
to take control of them.
The hunters were looking uneasily at the sky, flinching from the stroke of the drops.
A wave of restlessness set the boys swaying and moving aimlessly. The flickering
light became brighter and the blows of the thunder were only just bearable. The littluns began to run about, screaming.
Jack leapt on to the sand.
“Do our dance! Come on! Dance!”
“He ran stumbling through the thick sand to the open space of rock beyond the
fire. Between the flashes of lightning the air was dark and terrible; and the boys
followed him, clamorously. Roger became the pig, grunting and charging at Jack,
who sidestepped. The hunters took their spears, the cooks took spits, and the rest
clubs of fire-wood.
A circling movement developped and a chant. While Roger mimed the terror of the
pig, the littluns run and jumped on the outside of the circle.

Piggy and Ralph, afraid of both the storm and the beast, join the group and take part in the
tribal dance.
“Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!”
The movement became regular while the chant lost its first superficial excitement
and began to beat like a steady pulse. Roger ceased to be a pig and became a hunter,
so that the centre of the ring yawned emptily.
There was the throb and stamp of a single organism.
The dark sky was shattered by a blue-white scar. An instant later the noise was on
them like the blow of a gigantic whip. The chant rose a tone in agony.
“Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!”
Again the blue-white scar jagged above them and the sulphurous explosion beat
down. The littluns screamed and blundered about, fleeing from the edge of the
forest, and one of them broke the ring of biguns in his terror.
“Him! Him!”
The circle became a horseshoe. A thing was crawling out of the forest. It came
darkly, uncertainly.
The shrill screaming that rose before the beast was like a pain. The beast stumbled
into the horseshoe.
“Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!”
The blue-white scar was constant, the noise unendurable. Simon was crying out
something about dead man on a hill.
“Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! Do him in!”
The hunters in their blind excitement, like fierce cannibals, killed their friend Simon,
who was the only boy to know the truth about the cruel beast. In fact he had discovered
that the thing the hunters had supposed to be a beast was a dead parachutist and he
had come and tell them.

THE PERFECT DOG
(From Marley and Me)
In the summer of 1967, when I was ten years old, my father caved in to my persistent pleas and took me to get my
own dog. Together we drove in the family station wagon far into the Michigan countryside to a farm run by a woman
and her ancient mother.
The farm produced just one commodity: dogs. Dogs of every imaginable size and shape and age and temperament.
They had two only things in common: each was a mongrel and each was free to a good home. “Now, take your
time, son,” Dad said: “Your decision today is going to be with you for many years to come”. I immediately raced to
the puppy cage. “You want to pick one that’s not timid”, my father coached. “Try rattling the cage and see which
ones aren’t afraid”.
I grabbed the chain-link gate and yanked on it with loud clang. The dozen or so puppies reeled backward, collapsing on top of one another. Just one remained. He was gold with a blaze on his chest and he charged the gate
yapping fearlessly. He jumped up and excitedly licked my fingers through the fencing. I brought him home in a card
box and named him Shaun.
Shaun was spirited but controlled, affectionate but calm.
He gave me the childhood every kid deserves.

SHAUN
(adapted from Marley and Me, Ch. 1)
He was one of those dogs that give dogs a good name. He effortlessly
mastered every command I taught him and was naturally well-behaved.
I could drop a crust on the floor and he would not touch it until I gave the
okay. He came when I called him and stayed when I told him to. We could
let him out alone at night, knowing he would be back after making his
rounds. Not that we often did, but we could leave him alone in the house
for hours, confident he wouldn’t have an accident or disturb a thing. He
raced cars without chasing them and walked beside me without a leash.
He could dive to the bottom of our lake and emerge with rocks so big they
sometimes got stuck in his jaws. He loved nothing more than riding in the
car and would sit quietly in the backseat beside me on family road trips,
content to spend hours gazing out the window at the passing world. Perhaps
best of all, I trained him to pull me through the neighborhood dog-sled-style
as I sat on my bicycle, making me the hands-down envy of my friends.
Never once he led me into hazard.
He was with me when I smoked my first cigarette (and my last) and when
I kissed my first girl.
He was right there beside me in the front seat when I snuck out my older
brother’s Corvair for my first joyride.

ENGLISH AND AMERICAN HOUSES
Although today large blocks of flats have been built everywhere and cities have very similar suburbs it is still possible
to distinguish the traditional houses of a country from those built elsewhere in the world. They often have typical
features and architectural style. The first typical American house was the Saltbox. It was built in New England in the
17th century. The Saltbox was comfortable with a sloping roof and rooms both downstairs and upstairs.Traditional
American houses built in colonial, Georgian, neoclassical, Dutch or Italian style have wooden or brick walls, a sloping roof and bedrooms both upstairs and downstairs. The traditional American house called Foursquare was built
in the 19th century. It has four square rooms upstairs, three rooms and a hall downstairs. Attached to the front there
is the most typical feature of the American house: a large veranda where people sit and chat with their neighbours.
The typical English houses are detached, semi-detached and terraced with a front and a back garden, a colourful front
door, a colourful garden gate and lacy curtains at the windows. They have one or two rooms, a kitchen and a toilet
downstairs and one or more bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. Detached and semi-detached houses were built in
the late Victorian Age. Long rows of terraced houses can be found in the suburbs of every English town.

MEALS IN BRITAIN
Many people think that having a good breakfast is an excellent way to start a day. So they try to do their best. Some
of them have a mid-morning break, but the types of food and drink they eat can be quite different according to where
they are.
If you have a school break you usually eat a “packed snack” or just a piece of fruit. If you have a break at work, you
can choose from a large variety of snacks, sandwiches and cakes.
Lunch in Britain is usually at about one o’clock. Don’t be surprised if it’s that early!
British lunch is a light meal generally made up of just one course (meat with vegetables or fish with salad or potatoes)
plus milk, tea or beer as a beverage.
Children usually have their midday meal in the school canteen, if they haven’t got time to go back home for lunch.
After the midday meal comes teatime in the late afternoon or in the early part of the evening and if you have the
chance to participate in this old tradition, you may enjoy hot or cold fish, sausages or cheese dishes and biscuits or
cakes together with your hot “cuppa”, of course!
Dinner, the main British meal, is usually eaten at home together with the family and served at about six thirty or
seven. You have a choice of soup, fish and potatoes or salad, meat and vegetables, pudding and fresh fruit. If you had
a substantial meal at midday your next meal will be lighter (supper).
British eating habits are changing just like in many other countries of the world and new trends are spreading. The
traditional “Full English Breakfast” is disappearing. It has a revival from time to time and is still served in good
hotels around the world.
Good hotels usually set out a hot buffet made up of almost all of the courses traditionally included in the “Full
English Breakfast”.
Next to milk, coffee and croissants (for guests who
appreciate the typical continental breakfast) you can
find kippers with brown bread and butter or
porridge with brown sugar and cream
or milk. You can choose
from the main course between fried or scrambled
eggs, bacon or sausages,
grilled or fried tomatoes
or black pudding. You can
finish your substantial
breakfast with toast
and marmalade and one
or more cups of your
favourite flavour of tea.

POLLUTION
Since the second half of the 20th century overpopulation and industrial and economic growth have brought about
many serious environmental problems. Toxic waste and chemicals, released into the atmosphere from factories and
cars, have caused dangerous effects. Carbon dioxide from fossil fuels and other gases, especially CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) produce global warming and deplete the ozone layer. Some scientists say that world climate is changing
and the planet is becoming hotter. More and more land is becoming dry and unsuitable for growing plants; glaciers
are melting and the waters of the oceans are continuing to rise. Ultraviolet rays, that pass through the atmosphere
due to the hole in the ozone layer, are considered responsible for the increase of skin cancer. Pollution is destroying
wildlife on Earth. Acid rain damages plants and trees and in many places the balance between plants, animals and
their environment has changed. Acid rains have already killed forests in the Czech Republic and lakes in Sweden. In
these forests no trees can grow and no fish can live in the lakes. Lots of natural habitats are disappearing and some
species of plants and animals such as lynx, wolves and vultures are endangered.
Deforestation has turned large areas of the Earth, where once luxurious plants and trees grew, into rapidly expanding
deserts. Nowadays, scientists express concern about life on Earth and more and more people are concerned with the
preservation of the environment and improving the quality of life.
A global ecological effort should be made to save the planet and environmental problems should be tackled in a
radical and efficient way. Renewable resources, such as wind, water and sunlight should replace oil, gas and coal,
the traditional energy resources still in use. Recycling should reduce the need for waste dumps.

Hi Gary,
just a short note about my plans.
Tomorrow I’m going to Regent’s Park by tube for some fun and recreation. I’ll rent
a boat and take photos of the birds nesting on the island. I’ll take a picnic hamper.
I’m sure it will be exciting! What are you planning to do next weekend? BTW,
don’t forget we’ve a tennis match at 7:30 Saturday evening.

Hi Sam,
FYI I’m going to visit New York’s Guggenheim Museum on Friday. I’ll take one
of the legendary yellow taxi cabs into the upper East side of Manhattan to 1071
Fifth Avenue. I am sure I will recognize the museum’s big white building with its
large glass dome.
I’m going to see both the sculpture collection and works by many famous artists.
I’m sure it will be a very interesting cultural experience.

A PAGE FROM NIGEL’S DIARY
When summer came, we often cruised around the Ionian islands. In August 1994 we started renting a beachfront
house with a beautiful patio on the Isle of Corfu. Since that time my summer holidays became unforgettable. I spent
hours and hours playing with my brothers and friends on the beach. We didn’t lie on the sand in the sun because we
could not stop playing, and we often got a sunburn, even though my mother had rubbed sun cream onto our back
and shoulders before we went out in the sun.
Other times we got a bad cold. The sea in front of us was a magnetic attraction. Since we were four years old we
never tired of carrying water from the sea to the beach umbrella. We liked playing on the sand and stay wet all day.
We had brightly coloured buckets and spades and plastic moulds of many shapes. We used to spend the day moulding
starfish out of sand or making sand castles under the beach umbrella.
We also liked to pick up seashells and shiny bits of glass (dressed by the sea) while walking on the beach. Sometimes dad played marbles with us, but his marble never rolled along the track. He always missed his target and we
laughed heartily.
Dad tried to devise all sorts of ways of making us dry off, but we would not hear of staying in the sun.
Once he thought up a game to play: we had to close our eyes and sit on our bath towel, while he was counting to one
hundred. The prize for the most persevering was the biggest ice-cream.
He was only able to count to fifty, before we rushed into the sea.
When we got older, we started eying the girls on the beach and playing water polo and beach volleyball... everlasting matches!
When there were high waves we were in seventh heaven! We happily dived into the sea and swam races with our
friends. We loved to be tossed by the waves. We were mad with joy! Nothing could be more exciting.
Mum was scared to death. ”Come out!”, she shouted repeteadly. Nobody listened. We got out of the water only when
we were really exausted.
Then I had the first crush...

BARBIE DOLL
WAS MY PASSION
When I was a child I used to spend my free time watching
cartoons. It was quite funny, but once something new happened that changed the way I would spend my afternoons.
When I was five my mother gave me a Barbie doll as a
birthday present. I was astonished and since then I started
loving clothes and accessories.
I had a great time dressing my doll as a top model.
In a short time I got a collection of them. I spent school
holidays organizing fashion parades with my friends pretending that our Barbies were top models. Naomi Campbell and Claudia Shiffer were mythical heroines! We had
lots of small Barbie dresses, shoes, boots, hats and caps...
our Barbies had both a very elegant, expensive wardrobe
and a casual wardobe. Our dolls could change their wardrobe every season and on many occasions, and we had to
choose the nicest and most original outfits.

It’s 9.15 a.m. Our daily school assembly is over. We talked about school trips and extra-curricular activities. Each
department has organized a lot of trips. Other than visiting museums, art galleries and other places of interest regularly planned every year, we are going skiing in Italy and practising water sports in France. How lucky we are! And
if that’s not enough we are going to put on a show in our studio. It will be amazing! I’d never miss the contests
which usually take place in the indoor swimming pool area of my school, on the tennis courts and sports fields. We
have got special rooms to study and special places for each subject and for each activity. If I could I would stay in
school all my life. It’s so exciting!

FROM PAUL’S DIARY: WHEN READING BECAME MY FAVOURITE HOBBY
I learnt how to read when I was about five. I was at nursery school and my teacher used to tell us fairy-tales. I liked to listen
to her very much. Since she was not only a good reader but also a real actress, she used to act while reading. She used facial
expressions and gestures, she changed her voice according to the character she was interpreting.
She was such an excellent reader we stayed in silence until she had finished the story. Coloured books full of attractive
pictures were everywhere in the classroom. You could find them on your desk, on the shelf of your cupboard, in the big
basket next to the teacher’s desk. You could open them and enjoy their contents. Once I took the one with a funny pirate
on its cover. First I just glanced at it, but it appeared to be so interesting that I began to turn over the pages. Learning how
to read was as natural as eating or drinking. When I realized that I could do it I felt so excited I cried with joy. I kept on
reading and reading it over and over again. I felt as if I was the protagonist of the story and started telling it and acting as
my teacher did.

I HATE SCHOOL
Dear Lauren,
I feel very sad because my holidays are over and I have
to go back to school. I hate school. My classmates are
not nice. Most of them are quite bored and keep their
sunglasses and caps on at school. They play all sorts of
pranks and frequently someone bullies someone else.
Some of them sing and whistle while teachers are giving
lessons. Teachers say that there is a high “truancy rate”
and so they are always tired and angry. That’s why they
always assign detention and additional work every day!
I am not a bad guy but last year I did something dishonest. I cheated on the English test, and when my teacher
realized what I had done he shouted at me. I had to stay
at school until 5.00 p.m. It was such an awful day I’ll
never forget it! I feel very upset. Please, Lauren, help
me! What shall I do?
I’m waiting for your reply.
With love

THE MOST ENJOYABLE HOLIDAY
Dear Claire,
I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed my holidays. Where
did I go? I went to a youth hostel in England. Did you
get my card? I stayed there for two weeks and enjoyed
every moment of my stay. I never got homesick. It was a
busy holiday. I had to wash my clothes, cook and do the
washing up, but there were no adults organizing our day
or anything: it was just fun.
The food was good and the atmosphere very friendly. I
enjoyed meeting boys and girls with interests similar to
my own and the hours I spent with them at the nearest
recreation centre made my holiday unforgettable. I have
such happy memories I cannot wait for next summer to
arrive. I’ll never forget all those guys. It was one of the
most enjoyable holidays I have ever had.
I wish you had been there!

THE WORST HOLIDAY OF MY LIFE
Dear Richard,
my one-week holiday is over at last! And I’m very happy to be
at home again. I had the worst holiday of my life this year. I
went to Mudstone, a small and noisy town 13 kilometres from
Blackpod. It takes 3 hours by car to get there. Mudstone is such
an awful place. I will never go there again! Never! There are
neither interesting sights, nor beautiful landscapes. Absolutely
nothing worth seeing. People are not friendly and life is quite
unbearable for anyone over 10 and under 85! I stayed in a small
hotel with my family. I’ll never forget the cramped rooms with
their little windows looking out onto a noisy street. I did nothing special. We just had picnics and went to the cinema. I’m not
used to such a boring life and I really missed you. I hope we
can go somewhere better next year. Where did you go for your
holidays? Did you go anywhere exciting?
Write and tell me.
kisses

JOE
Joe began climbing the tree. He reached up to the first branch with both hands, then swung his legs up to grip it. He
grunted loudly as he lifted himself onto the branch. From there he still couldn’t see into the garden next door, so he
climbed up a little higher. He stopped to have another look through the leaves. He could see most of the lawn now,
but his ball was nowhere in sight.
Joe decided to climb just a bit further even though the tree was swaying in the breeze.
The branches were getting rather thin now too. He reached up with his hand and moved his leg forward, then suddenly... CRACK...
Joe felt himself falling. Leaves were brushing against his face, branches were scraping his arms, then... BUMP...
He had reached the bottom. He felt himself all over and looked at his arms and legs. There were a few scratches and a
few bruises were going to appear soon, but he was still alive. There was only one thing to do, he thought to himself...
He reached up to the first branch with both hands then swung his legs up to grip it.

SOPHIE COMES HOME
Music still blared out from the open window. Sophie knocked on the door for the third time, this time beating it with
her fists.”Let me in”, she shouted. The sudden stop to the loud music took Sophie by surprise. She stepped back from
the door and looked up towards the upstairs window. Nick appeared extremely cross.
“Have you forgotten your key again?”he said.
“Yes”, she replied in a voice which showed her crossness.
“Well that’s your own hard luck then”, he said, “ because I’m not letting you in”.
He disappeared from the window and before she had time to shout the music started again even louder.
“NICK...NICK...PLEASE!”
The music again stopped abruptly.
“What did you say?”said the voice from above.
Sophie hesitated. “I said please actually”. Her voice wasn’t much louder than a whisper.
Again Nick vanished but this time the music didn’t start and within a few seconds the front door was open with Nick
smiling behind it.
“Thank you very much,”Sophie said as she walked in. Nick fell to the floor in a pretend faint.

A FRENCHMAN IN ENGLAND
A Frechman was once travelling in England. He could speak English fairly well, but his vocabulary was limited. Once,
for example, he was eating in a small country hotel and he wanted to order some eggs, but he couldn’t remember
the word for eggs.
Fortunately he saw a rooster walking in the yard. “What is the name of that bird?” he asked first. “It is called a
rooster,” the waiter said.
“What is a rooster’s wife called?” the Frenchman asked. “She is called a hen”, the waiter answered.
“And what are the hen’s children called?” the Frenchman asked. “They are called chickens,” the waiter told him.
At last the Frenchman asked “What are chickens called before they are born?”
“They are called eggs,” the waiter said.
So the Frenchman said: “Fine! Please bring me two with some coffee and some toast.”

JONATHAN SWIFT AND HIS SERVANT
The following story is about Jonathan Swift, who was a famous English writer. One morning, when Swift was getting dressed, he found that his shoes were covered with mud. He called his servant to him and said: “My shoes are
covered with mud. Why didn’t you clean them? You are supposed to clean them every night.”
“I thought it was useless to clean them in such bad weather,” the servant said.
“They will only be dirty again shortly.”
Later that day, when the servant appeared for his dinner, there was no food on the table for him. He went to Swift
and asked the reason for this.
“I thought it was useless for you to eat,” Swift said, because you will only be hungry again shortly.”
