It is 30 years since Charles Carey jumped into his car and drove to
Tuscany to find some olive oil to sell. At that time olive oil was only
sold by chemists, by one or two wine merchants as a favour for
the estates that they were representing, and by Italian,
Spanish and Greek families who imported food from
their respective countries.
Now Charles and his wife’s company, The Oil
Merchant, represents specialist olive oil producers
from Europe, and one from South Africa,
as well as producers of oil-related products
such as wine and balsamic vinegars,
and pasta sauces and pestos.

Priorat has come of age, firmly established as one of Spain’s top wine regions. In this tasting, three of Priorat’s most
prestigious producers join forces to tell the story of this outstanding region through their award-winning wines. These
are wines that speak strongly of their terroir: a land of steep slopes, unforgiving slate soils and old vines – particularly
Garnacha and Cariñena – yielding intensely concentrated fruit. The line-up includes a very rare opportunity to taste
the first wine to be bottled in Priorat, as well as the DWWA Trophy-winning Scala Dei, Cartoxia 2007.
