The competition being held for the 16th time is for the best theses in geosciences and petroleum engineering by university and diploma graduates, as well as PhDs, at Italian universities or by Italian students abroad. The theses have to cover a subject related to geology, geophysics, formation evaluation, well drilling and completion, reservoir engineering, production and transport, HSE, or energy economics. This contest is a joint initiative of EAGE, SPE Italian Section and Assomineraria, which is the Italian Petroleum and Mining Industry Association, to encourage young students specializing in petroleum engineering and geosciences. The awards started in 1993 and since 2001 they have been associated with the name of Gustavo Sclocchi, the Eni manager, who was the main promoter of the event and who died unexpectedly in Moscow in 2001. Over the last 16 years some 353 theses have been submitted of which 94 have won awards. Six theses were awarded and four received an honourable mention. The officers of the three associations – Thomas Lockart (SPE Italian Section), Davide Calcagni (EAGE), and Giancarlo Dossena (Assomineraria) warmly greeted the winners and presented them with a cash prize of 2400 euro each. The recipients of the honourable mentions had a free membership for either SPE or EAGE for 2009. This year the winners are: Emmanuel Spadavecchia - Multiple prediction and removal via Kirchhoff extrapolation – Laurea Specialistica in Ingegneria della Telecomunicazioni Claudia Mattioli – Application of simulation techniques to the risk analysis of drilling projects - Laurea Specialistica in Ingegneria Gestionale Michel Cancelliere - Preconditioning Techniques for Unconventional Well Testing Problems - Laurea Specialistica in Ingegneria Matematica Matteo Magagni - Drill-Bit Performance Evaluation: theoretical studies, data analysis and technical-economic evaluations – Dottorato di Ricerca in Georisorse e Geotecnologie Paolo Bartelucci - Formation Evaluation in carbonatic reservoirs and integrated petrophysical study of the Cavone field (Mesozoic, Modena) – Laurea Specialistica in Scienze Geologiche Simone Fontana - Diagenetic and dolomitization study of Monte Zugna Formation (Calcari Grigi Group, Lower Jurassic): fluid inclusions analyses as a constrain for the thermal history modelling - Laurea Specialistica in Scienze Geologiche 1/4 Applicate The honourable mentions were awarded to: Gabriele Zaccaria - Kick Tolerance Definition, Calculation and Analysis of Results for the Application in Well Design, Drilling and Well Control Operations.
