We will continue to follow the routeof quality and traceability of the supply chain in order to guarantee the incomparable organoleptic characteristics, healthy food values and dietary safety of our products. The presence of Apulia in a prestigious showcase like Berlin vouches for our attention towards this sector and ourdetermined effort to back up Apulian producers with endorsement and development strategies capable of safeguarding our production and maintaining the highest standards of excellence. Fabrizio Nardoni Regional Counselor to Agro-food Resources, Puglia Region The business exchange between Apulia and German in 2013 reached nearly 1.8 billion euro. Exports to the German Federal Republic increased by 17.3% in 2012 and by 6.4% in 2013 in clear contrast to national data. Among the areas which made the greatest contribution to obtaining these export results are agricultural, fish and forestry products: 216 million euro (+2.1% compared to 2012 ) and food products: 102 million euro (+16% compared to 2012). Our region is one of the main suppliers of agricultural products to Germany. We are made aware of this from year to year when participating in Fruit Logistica, a necessary appointment in our promotional calendar, where operators in our region have the opportunity to consolidate their presence in this market and expand it further. This participation takes place in cooperation with the Apulian chamber system and the Apulia Regional government, political branch for rural development. A consolidated partnership, which presents the German public with a basket of top quality products which, thanks to the commitment to excellence of the producers and an intense promotional campaign by these two institutions, has allowed Apulia to become the leading Italian region in many areas of production (table grapes, cherries, new potatoes and vegetables). The Apulia region is a land which has always worked to guarantee quality and the wellbeing of the international customer. In Apulia flavor really is health. Alessandro Ambrosi President Unioncamere Puglia MAN AND THE ENVIRONMENT THE STRENGTH OF APULIA Thanks to its natural climatic setting, which allows for the cultivation of a broad range of products, Apulia is one of the most important realities in the national panorama of fruit and vegetable production. Today this is backed up by the high appreciation of its products on the international market and the level of productive specialization achieved throughout the region, which sees a number of productive districts focusing on specialised top quality production. Apulia is now undergoing a consolidation phase in corporate restructuring, which has resulted in a noteworthy decrease in the number of businesses, linked to an increase in the average land area per farm. This process is especially evident in the vegetable crop area, where companies have been reduced to around 15,000, with a contraction of 47% in 10 years, in contrast to a 2.5 increase in total cultivated area (1) . In 2014 the number of businesses decreased by a further 4.1% compared to the previous year, while the number of employees increased significantly to nearly +20% (43,320 employees versus 36,267 in 2013) (2). Thanks to this concentration and productive restructuring, Apulian businesses in this sector are now poised to achieve winning results in a competitive environment governed by fewer clients who are increasing larger and better organised. The area of transformation and commercialization has also shown the presence of a consolidated category of medium sized businesses with good organizational and specialization levels. In addition to this, the proximity of the region to production poles keeps organoleptic and quality standards of products high. The challenges presented by the most important lines of distribution, Organised Distribution (demanding high volumes, qualitative and quantitative production planning, financial resources, standardization, prolonged shelf life, punctual delivery times and continuity of requested services) have been taken up by the Apulian companies, which today are among the main productive partners for the most important distributors in Europe. In terms of exports, one statistic stands out from the rest. Taking into account the adverse weather conditions which damaged part of the crop last year, for which data is not yet available, we can already confirm that from January to October 2014 fruit and vegetables from Apulia registered export values of 385 million euro, an amount that leads us to predict ongoing expansion capacities of this product compared to 2013 and, if the data for the fourth trimester 2014 are to be trusted, the possibility of an increase. This information is anything but secondary, especially if seen in the context of the contracted internal market and generally stagnant economic situation in the EU area. Apulia fruit /vegetable exports Values in Euro, cumulative data (1) source: ISMEA (2) source: Unioncamere Puglia 2012 2013 Jan/Oct 2014 393.839.943 442.481.123 679.886.240 The main target country for this high quality production is Germany, which during the first nine months of 2014 absorbed 26% of the total value of fruit and vegetable exports from Apulia, nearly 113 million euro. In addition to these overall values, the historical series is also surprising, as the partial values in this case confirm and foresee an increase compared to the 145million euro of 2013. These results place Apulia among the main Italian regions exporting fruit and vegetables to Germany: a high percentage of the fruit and vegetables reaching German tables comes from Apulia, by far the number one region in South Italy exporting these products to Germany. Apulian fruit and vegetable production is also firmly at the top of the list in terms of the number of farms per person employed. An overview of the third trimester of 2014 shows 25,900 businesses— definitely first place among all the regions in Italy and 16% of the total for the whole country, businesses that employ 43,320 people, 17% of the national total for this sector. 48 of these businesses have production values of over one million euro, increasing to 167 if total production is set at 250 thousand euro per year. This is the heart of the Apulian fruit and vegetable industrywhich grows, internationalizes, hires and sells. These businesses are to be found near practically every town, and underline the fact that this productive branch of our region also has a social, anthropogenic and historical value in addition to economic and employment aspects, actually having a significant influence on the landscape itself. Top areas with the highest numbers of fruit and vegetable producer are: Capitanata (Foggia and its province), Brindisi and its province, the northern and southern Bari areas and those parts of Salento which are not mainly given over to tourism. And this is just the tip of the iceberg of the strategic productive branch: this overview takes into account only the “primary” part of the fruit and vegetable supply chain (producers, consortiums and farm associations), without factoring in the role of spinoffs and the rest of the supply chain, from companies involved in transformation of agricultural products to commercial organizations, groups of buyers, markets for agricultural products, traditional and modern retailers and exporters right up to the specialized shippers. Taken as a whole, all of these economic stakeholders lead us to emphasize even further the propulsive role of this production for our region. There is still ample room for improvement, but the courage and entrepreneurship of our business community—this year devastated by the worst weather conditions on record—is beginning to receive its rewards. Apulian products have reached every corner of Europe and beyond. The largest investment has been made: what we need to do now is just carry on with coherence and tenacity, as our business community has always been capable of doing.
