th PRESS RELEASE July 6 2015 MUSICA SULLE BOCCHE JAZZ AND MUSIC FROM THE WORLD AT SANTA TERESA GALLURA TH TH FROM 26 TO 30 AUGUST Musica sulle Bocche celebrates its 15th birthday The International Jazz Festival “Musica sulle Bocche”, in its fifteenth edition this year, will take place in Santa th th Teresa di Gallura from 26 to 30 August. Located in one of the most beautiful and well known natural sceneries of the Mediterranean, “Musica sulle Bocche” has immediately been characterised by the strong connection between music and landscape: the concerts at dawn on the Arena Bianca beach and at sunset near the lighthouse of Capo Testa have become events you simply can’t miss, among the most awaited of the whole Sardinian summer music festival season. “Musica sulle Bocche”, under the stage management of Enzo Favata, has presented high quality artists and musical projects during the years, from jazz to classical music, from experimental to electronic music, without forgetting the island’s great traditional music. Many are the names of those who have ensued one another in the different locations of the Festival: Michael Nyman, Anouhar Brahem, Dino Saluzzi, Dhafer Youssef, Stephan Micus, Ralph Towner, the Area, Les Violons Barbares, the violinist Anna Tifu, Marcus Stockhausen, Django Bates, Anja Lechner, Alexander Balanescu and many other artists who demonstrate the variety and the quality of the offer. Innovation is ongoing, for both the musical choices and the planning of a programme in order to please different types of audience, including the youngest ones, towards whom Musica sulle Bocche has showed particular interest. Other artistic languages are always present: photography, video-art and this year also dance. 2015 programme: concerts and new additions th The concerts programme opens on August 26 with an inaugural concert in one of the most beautiful sites of Santa Teresa Gallura, Cala Grande, also known as “the Moon Valley”. The audience will be accompanied along the route to the beach, where at sunset the Caracas Café trio will play, with Enzo Favata (saxophones), Marcello Peghin (guitars), UT Gandhi (drums), and to delight a few moments also the Ethiopian dancer Melaku Belay. (Entrance ticket €5,00 including guided tour of the site) Melaku Belay, very famous in his country as a performer of traditional Ethiopian dance, will be present every day at the Festival and will meet his passionate public with lessons and performances. th August 27 there will be the opening of the master classes, this edition’s new entry: jazz piano with Enrico Zanisi, double bass and ensemble music with Danilo Gallo and drums with UT Gandhi. You can sign up and participate; the fee is €30,00 per lesson. The four days will also be accompanied by workshops: “Guided listenings” with Valerio Corzani, musician and well-known radio presenter on Rai Radiotre; “Everything is sound”, with the musician Alessandro Olla, a workshop for adults and children meant to develop the ability to listen to sounds in a creative way and in touch with the natural environment. Other new entry of this year is the “Musica sulle Bocche Market” located in via Santa Lucia, near the central stage, dedicated to high quality food, human rights and sustainability. Open from 8:00pm until the end of each concert. th The concerts programme starts on August 27 in the afternoon, at 7:00 pm, with the arrival of the brass band from Livorno, BadaBimBumBand, which continues the Musica sulle Bocca’s tradition of itinerant shows through the streets of the town centre, on the beaches and in other historical places of Santa Teresa. The group is made up of 12 elements and will be present every day of the festival, both in the morning and afternoon with three different performances having different arrangements, choreography and costumes: Opus Band, Bandita and Wanna Gonna Show. th Also on August 27 , at 9:00pm, the first series of shows in the characteristic square of Santa Lucia, illuminated by the visual games and special effects of “Qoelet Pro” who renew their presence of the festival for the fourth time: the music starts with an entirely Sardinian quartet “Four and More” with Massimo Carboni at the tenor saxophone, ensued at 10:00pm by the quartet of Stefano Di Battista, one of the greatest sax performers at the moment (Single ticket for two concerts €15,00) th The concerts on August 28 will start in the morning, at noon, with the entrance of the BadaBimBumBand on the Rena Bianca beach, to be continued in the afternoon through the streets of the town centre. At 7:00pm, one of the traditional moments of the festival: the great popular music from Sardinia will be represented this year by the “canto in re” with Daniele Giallara (voice) and Bruno Maludrottu (guitar), in front of the rural church of Nostra Signora di Buoncammino. (free admission) The evening will continue on the main stage at 9:00pm with the quartet guided by the Mozambican saxophonist Ivan Mazuze, joined by Enrico Zanisi at the piano; while at 10:00pm the famous French clarinettist Louis Sclavis will go on stage with the show “Silk and Salt Melodies” in a quartet featuring Gilles Coronado at the guitar, Benjamin Moussay at the piano and keyboard, and the master of zarb, the Iranian percussionist Keyvan Chemirani. (Single ticket for the two concerts €15,00). th On August 29 , the programme of itinerant concerts will be repeated for the BadaBimBumBand as the day before. At 7:00 pm, under the centuries-old olive trees of the rural sanctuary of Buoncammino, one of the special events of the festival will take place with Mamadou and the Gouney of Africa: a show dedicated to migrants, made up and performed by young Africans living in Sardinia. The Senegalese Mamdou Mbengas, in griot style, that is the style of the great story tellers of his country, will narrate the story of pain and hope of those forced to leave, of the great migrations of yesterday and today, accompanied by six percussionists. (free entrance). th The evening of August 29 continues at 9:00 pm in the square “piazza Santa Lucia” with the Sardinian trio Ollantaytambo, followed at 10:00 pm by the original work “Mesa – the Table of Music”, in collaboration with the Italian Embassy in Ethiopia, that sees the combination of Enzo Favata, at the saxophones and synthesizer, and the Ethiopian vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke, international leading figure for his long career, in which he has met Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, considered the father of “Ethiojazz”, where Ethiopian tradition, jazz instruments African rhythms and improvisation meet. The show, already presented in nd Addis Abeba on June 2 will be renewed at Santa Teresa Gallura with a team of 7 musicians on the stage. (Single ticket for two concerts €15,00). th The last day, August 30 , begins at dawn with the concert on the Rena Bianca beach, which through the years has become one of the most celebrated events in European jazz festivals. This year the scene at dawn will be entrusted to the magic percussions of Alfio Antico, Sicilian, shepherd-musician, authentic miracle worker of the frame drum. At noon, 12:00pm, the BadaBimBumBand’s farewell that finishes its performances on the Rena Bianca beach. During the day there will be the closing of the master classes and of the “Guided listenings” with Valerio Corzani, while the laboratory “Everything is sound” will present its results by composing a “festival soundtrack”. At 7:00 pm another special event of the Festival which is also its symbolic closing: the concert at sunset at Capo Testa lighthouse, “Sonata per luna crescente – Jazz for two keyboards” with Giuliana Soscia at the accordion and Pino Jodice at the piano. (Entrance ticket €5,00, bus transport from town included) Starting at 9:00 pm, on the stage of piazza Santa Lucia, all the artists present will play for the final party with jam session, together with several young talented locals. The photographic show of the fifteen years of the Festival can be visited every day at the tower Longonsardo.. For each edition, the stage manager entrusts the creation of an original image for the Festival to a visual artist. This year, the image belongs to the Sardinian artist Toni Demuro, who will also be present during the Festival with an exhibition of his works. ………………………………………………………….. The Festival is organised by the Concert Association Jana Project that this year works as a “Green Team”, both as an internal work method, and as a method to externally promote a series of initiatives to increase awareness about ecology and sustainability. Musica sulle Bocche is carried out with the support of the Town Council of Santa Teresa Gallura, the Autonomous Region of Sardinia, through the Public Education, Events and Cultural Heritage Department, the Tourism Department, the Banco di Sardegna Foundation and thanks to the tourist operators of Santa Teresa Gallura. Since this year, Musica sulle Bocche is part of the Europe Jazz Network, the largest European network of jazz festivals.
