What does Lent mean for us?
The season of Lent will start this week with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. So it is a good time to ask
ourselves what this traditional season of penance might mean for us nowadays.
One writer with a Protestant background, David Maddalena, has noted the fact that Lent has figured much
more in Catholic and Orthodox practice than it has in his own tradition. But he decided to give our
approach a trial. He recorded his experience. “Several years ago I followed a fast through the forty days
of Lent and found that it changed my view of Easter, and that it changed me. Fasting and meditating on
my weaknesses helped me grasp the intense significance of the crucifixion, and gave me a deep and
powerful longing for the resurrection, which then became joy on Easter Sunday.” Lent is a chance to
remember the darkness of the cross before the dawn of the resurrection. In the orthodox Church, Lent is
called the season of Bright Sadness, because it is a time of both celebration and mourning. Our Catholic
practice during Lent used to be quite severe. In earlier times it meant going without food until the evening
on every day in Lent except the Sundays. No meat was to be eaten until Easter. The term “Carnival”
came to be applied to the two or three days of last-minute relaxation before Ash Wednesday. The Latin
“Carne vale” means “Goodbye to meat”. Our Catholic approach to Lent became less stringent over the
years. Daily fasting was no longer required. Then the meatless days were limited to the Fridays of Lent.
In our time the meatless days have been further cut back to Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, which are
also days of fasting. Does this mean the Church has given up the idea of Lent being a time of penance? In
no way. What it does mean is that the Church realises that there may be other acts of penance more
realistic for us than eating fish, eggs or a vegetarian dish in place of meat, or having a light snack at lunch
and putting off our main meal of the day until the evening, something many folk do anyway. Going
without a favourite program on television could be a more genuine act of penance today than those that
used to be prescribed for the forty days of Lent. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday as days of fast and
abstinence remain useful signposts of the Lenten call to penance. But the Church is treating us as adults,
trusting us to recognise the need for penance throughout the other days of Lent as well and confident that
we will work out for ourselves what are genuine acts of penance in our day and age. One other thing to
keep in mind. As well as being a time of penance, Lent is a call to charity, to bring aid to those less
fortunate than ourselves. It is proper that at least some of our acts of penance are money-saving. They
can contribute to the wherewithal we have to aid those in need. Not that what we save financially through
our penance should be the limit of our giving. But the call to penance and the call to charity tie in nicely
with each other.
