TROVAROMA From Tuesday 18th at Teatro dell’Opera A view from the bridge T his is the European première of a two-act opera by William Bolcom based on the famous play by Arthur Miller. Staged for the first time in Chicago in 1999, on a libretto by Arnold Weinstein in collaboration with Miller himself who wrote some new lyrics especially for the opera. The story is set among immigrants in New York, a community made up of struggling dock workers and their families, some of whom are in the country illegally. The opera's vibrant setting is an Italian-American neighbourhood in Brooklyn, back in the 1950s, but the issues underlying the story seem both ancient and cut from modern headlines - ranging from the problems of illegal immigrants to ethnic and social stereotypes. Bruno Bartoletti conducts an all-American cast, Frank Galati directs, and Woody Allen’s set designer, Santo Loquasto, impresses his own cinematographic perspective. 18th January, repeated on 20th, 22nd, 23rd and 25th.
