Featuring a famous conductor and serial womaniser with a sick wife and a Polish maid, it was described by the Times critic as “ironic, blisteringly funny, fast-paced, pithy and with a surprise comeuppance for the ghastly main character that makes the end very dark indeed. Typical McEwan, in other words.” The author and the composer first worked together in 1983 with a pacifist oratorio entitled ‘Or Shall We Die?’ denouncing the stockpiling of deadly nuclear weapons. For the Italian premier of this latest work at the Teatro Olimpico, Vittorio Parisi conducts the Ensemble Roma Sinfonietta with soloists Piia Komsi, Virginia Kerr, Harriet Williams, Hector Guedes, Daniel Broad and Philip Sheffield.
