wo separate exhibitions in
Rome celebrate the work of
cutting edge contemporary artist
Damien Hirst. The first (at Gagosian Gallery, Via F. Crispi 16), is
part of a larger exhibition conceived
to take place simultaneously in
each of Gagosian Gallery’s eleven
locations across the world. It features Hirst’s spot paintings which
are considered to be among the
most distinctive in contemporary
art, a symbol that is recognized
universally, cutting across boundaries of culture and language.
From 18th at Teatro dell’Opera
ome’s Opera Theatre opens
the New Year with “the best
of all possible worlds” in which
irony and wit come to life to the
notes of Bernstein’s comic operetta: “Candide”. First performed
in 1956, and with a libretto by
Lillian Hellman and others after
Voltaire, the story focuses on the
figure of Dr. Pangloss who has
taught the Westphalian nobleman
Candide and his beloved Cunegonde that this is “the best of all A scene from “Candide”
possible worlds”. In this belief
they go off on their travels – and experience exile, war, rape, the Inquisition
and frequent betrayals. In the end they realize that they must come to terms
with reality and “make their gardens grow”. On the podium, the British
conductor Wayne Marshall who has worked with Choir director Roberto
Gabbiani, and a cast that includes Michael Spyres, Bruno Taddia, Jessica
Pratt, Derek Welton, Jane Henschel. From 18th to 24th January at Teatro

he Orchestra di Santa Cecilia and conductor Antonio Pappano celebrate the great pianist Maurizio Pollini’s 70th birthday with the
performance of Mozart’s Piano Concert K488 with Pollini in the
leading role. This Concert was finished, according to Mozart's own catalogue, in March 1786, around the time of the premiere of his opera,
“The Marriage of Figaro”. Scored for piano solo and an orchestra, it
was one of three subscription concerts given that spring and was
probably played by Mozart himself
at one of these. The rest of the
programme foresees the symphony
from Rossini’s “Silken Ladder”
and Haydn’s “Sinfonia Concertante” n. 105. It’s a special occasion,
not only because it celebrates Pollini’s incredible lifelong career of
artistic excellency, but also because
all proceeds go to Umberto Veronesi’s Foundation for scientific research. Concert on Wednesday

season entitled “Musical Offering”. A long-time friend and supT
porter of the Rome ensemble, composer Ennio Morricone, is on the

music. Morricone is a household name throughout the world thanks
above all to the scores he has written for hundreds of films including box office hits such as Cinema Paradiso, The Good The Bad and
The Ugly, The Untouchables. But – Morricone points out – he is first
and foremost a composer of what he calls “absolute music”, and it is
to this genre the first part of the programme is dedicated. The
