FUTURE PROSPECTS
Some future prospects for the activities of the Telefono Verde AIDS can be
&oposed. F6r exampie, the help-line could expand its activities to include informatiori
on other communicable diseases. In fact, sexual behaviour that represents a nsk of
exposure to HIV infection aiso represents a risk of exposure to other sexually
transmitted diseases.
The Telefono Verde AIDS can also be considered as a rapid and effettive t001 in
emergency situations (as demonstrated for the Ebola Virus and Necrotising Fasciitis),
and as a unique means of evaluating over time eventual changes in the generai public's
information needs.
Since the help-line is accessible nationwide, it can provide useful indications for
planning socio-health interventions and the information campaigns developed by the
Ministry of Health. Moreover, the proven efficiency of the help-line. which can be
attributed to the professionality with which its researchers cany out their work and to
the experience gained over the years, leads to the proposai of creating a single point of
reference for information and health education. A single point of reference would aiso
be useful for creating a direct link between the world of public health and individuai
citizens and would allow the Istituto Superiore di Sanità to have an "open window" to
the public, as has occwed in other European countries.
