This summer you will read “Va dove ti porta il cuore” (Follow you heart) Susanna Tamaro.
Please make sure you purchase the student versión with the blue cover, you can purchase it on
Class books website. You will read up through page 42.
This is the story of a grandmother (Olga) who became the mother to her granddaughter (Marta)
after the death of her daughter (Ilaria). After Marta leaves for America, the grandmother writes
her a long letter (in the form of a diary) tracing her own life; her life as a child, her relationship
with her parents, her marriage, and a deep dark secret which she reveals to her granddaughter.
Through her diary Olga hopes to recover her relationship with her granddaughter, and that
Olga’s own experiences will help Marta better live her own life.
It is important that you do not look up every word. As you read the book answer the questions
on pages 90-93. The questions are broken down by pages so you should answer the questions
after you have read the corresponding section. There are broader questions to reflect on deeply
and answer below. Answer the questions through “page 27”. You will use your answers to my
questions to participate in class discussion upon our return to school in September. I suggest you
mark your books with your thoughts as you read (Italian). We will have a quiz on this during
the first week of school
Vocabulary: Please keep a list of new and high usage words. Do not write down every word
that is new, but select important words that would retell the story, or perhaps a word or two that
you feel you would personally use. Write a definition of each word in Italian and an example
sentence. Do not overwhelm yourself with trying to record too many words, less is better. I
would estimate that between 20 to 30 words is ok. I will collect the list, and it will be part of
your grade
Remember when reading the book, it is not simply a series of events, but it will reveal the
character’s (la nonna) innermost thoughts, feelings and reflections. Try to understand these,
think about how the nipote and also her daughter would react when reading the Nonna’s diary,
jot down your opinions in a notebook
Finally here is link to one scene from the movie “Va dove ti porta il cuore”. In this 7 minute
sequence you will hear the narrator reading her diary. Also included is the selection of Buck.
We will watch the entire movie in Sept. There are no subtitles.

Pg 14. Per quali ragioni vanno via della casa gli adolescenti italiani/americani?
Pg 15 Perchè la nonna pensa che ‘andare via’ sia un’ottima idea per sua nipote (line 6-7)?
Pg 15 (line 16-17 Sei d’accordo o no?
“La vita non è una corsa ma l’essere capace di trovare un centro, uno scopo.”
Pg 18 (line 13-14) Perch`e la nonna non ha portato sua nipote dal psicólogo anche quando era
stata consigliata alla direttrice dell’asilo?
Pg 23 (line 15) Perchè Olga si chiede d’essere feminista? Secondo lei come era la vita di sua
madre e di sua nonna?
Pg 27 (line 5-6) La nipote ha dentro di se un inquietudine, mentre la mamma aveva l’ideologia.

Pg 31 Tamaro describe l’albero e perchè è bello accarezzarlo. Perchè e bello? Secondo te
sarebbe bello accarezzare un albero?
Pg 35 Cosa intende la nonna quando scrive che la felicità e la gioia sono diverse? Secondo te
sono differenti e perchè si o no?
Pg 37 Perchè le verità semplici sono le più difficili da capire?
Pg 62. (lines 11/12/13) Olga ha una visione del paradiso che ha datto alla bambina Marta. “….il
cielo era una specie di grande albergo, ognuno lassù aveva una stanza e in quella stanza tutte le
persone che si erano volute bene, dopo la norte si trovavano di nuovo e stavano insieme per
sempre.” Poi dopo dice alla sua nipote “Stanza fatti più grande!”
Hai un simile visione del paradiso? Cosa pensi di questa visione?
Pg 82 Il gesuita (Jesuit priest) crede che l’uomo è come la terra, metà illuminata dal sole e metà
in ombra. “Neanche i santi avevano luce dappertutto, “vivere è lottare perchè ci sia più luce che
ombra. Non si deve avere fiducia di chi è perfetto », « crede soltanto quello che le dice il suo
cuore » Cosa significa questo pensiero per te ?
