CarissimiAmici,
si puo' dire che ancora non
abbiamo tolto il Presepio dalle
nostre case e gia' cominciamo a
prepararci per la Quaresima.
Abbiamo alcune Oomeniche prima
delle Ceneri che si chiamano
Oomenica dell'Anno. Ancora queste
domeniche ci prilsentano una vita
che cammina verso Oio e che nelle
dilficolta' del mondo e in quelle
personali e' sempre iIIuminata dalla
bonta' e dalla misericordia di Cristo,
presente tra noi dal giorno del
Natale; e' una nascita che continuamente si rinnova nel mondo e in noi
stessi. Lanostra tristezza della vita
nasce anche, dal fatto che la mattina, quando apriamo gli occhi,
dimentichiamo che in quel momento
Oio e noi viviamo insieme.

E allora adesso, questo tempo cH
Quaresima ci vuole aiutare a ienere
presente Oio. 'E' uno di quei
momenti che si chiamano "i tempi
forti" perche' devono creare
qualche momento nuovo nella nostra vita.· Ci devono dare qualche

Abbiamo le messe alle 10 am,
12:15 pm, alle 7'pm.e alle,8 pm.
Oistribuiremo I,e ceneri per tutta la
giornata. Ancora noi distribuiremo
le Ceneri la Oomenica seguente.
Potete poi portare le ceneri anche.
alle altre persone che non vengono
o non possono venire in Chiesa. E'
un modo gia' di cominciare tuni
insieme iI cammino della Quaresima. Con iI pensiero della morte,
ma come un pensiero che ci aiuta a
purificarci, da tutto quello che e'
polvere e, tarnera' in polvere. Tutta
la nostra ricerca giornaliera consiste

Durante iI tempo della Quaresima

principalmente, la nostra meditazione della Parola di ·Oio deve
essere accompagnata dalla penitenza. Specialmente il giorno delle
Ceneri e' astinenza e digiuno. Cioe'
non si mangia carne 'e bisogna
privarsi di qualche cosa. Ma questo
senso di penitenza ci deve accompagnare per la Quaresima. Privarsi
di qualche cosa durante tutti i
quaranta giorni della Quaresima ci
fa bene. Anche perl:he' 10 possiamo
fare per qualche intenzione speciale. Cerchiamo pero' di riempire
la nostra settimana con i Sacramenti della Confessione e della
Comunione.

nostra vita, la vita delle altre persone. Tutto e' un dono di dio; e

These few words are a reminder

period of Lent.
Wednesday 28th February is Ash
Wednesday, a day of fasting and
abstinence, a day of Pena'nee, a
day on which the Church reminds,
us that we are dust and unto dust
we shall return. In other words the
Church reminds us that we all have
to die and this reminder is ever
preseltt i1i me, and I would like you
to meditate on this.
We all have to die, and strange as it
,may seem, there is probably no
lovelier thought to better our lives
that this, because the thought of
death not onlY reminds us that our
soul will then be reunited with God
but also that spiritually we are very
much enriched.
We have been created in the image
and likeness of God and God wants
our soul to be similar to His. And,
as we have been created in tlie"
image of likeness of God, we know
the meaning'of justice, goodness,
mercy, forgiveness and other sentiments that _better our lives. If at
,times we are not able to openly
manifest these sentiments it is
because of one thing, i.e. our sins.
But humble and sincere prayers to
God will lead us to His forgiveness,
to· the Sacraments of Confessions
and Holy Communion. These will
help us to retain in our hearts the
reality of God's life that is within us!.

Per iniziativa del Comitato Pro·
motore Itallani nel Mondo,
domenica 10 dicembre, con una
suggestiva lunzione religiosa
presso la Chiesa ltaliana di San
Pietro di Londra, con Autorita' civili
e religiose, e la panecipazione del
senatore Carlo Tani, ed un lolto
gruppo di anziani. E' siata varata la
prima giomata Italiani nel Mondo
con Anziani.
Dopo la Santa Messa e le loto,
questo gruppo di circa 80 anziani e'
stato ospite degli Italiani nel Mondo
nei locali del Club della Chiesa. E'
stato loro servito un, oitimo ,pranzo
di ,an,tipasto, tonellini in brodo,
arrosto di vitello con legumi, bollito
misto, tona tricolore, calle', vino ed
acqua minerale.

Once In the odd, blue moon, the
"box" does proffer some rare programme of truly exceptional value.
This Christmas was one siJch isolated occasion. I refer to the "Aida"
from the Met. on Christmas
Day.
•

Since the irreplaceable, incomparable Tebaldl hung up her Ethiopian
wig and drapes, I 'have steadfastly
listened to and studied innumerable
soprani. This is a most demanding
but, at the same time, extremely
rewarding soprano role. All these
talented and dedicated ladies have
had some good moments to offer,
but none to compare remotely to
Renata, my idol of long standing.
Some few years ago, on a special
televised "Callas Award" competition, I got so very excited over a
Iil\le soprano from America, with an
Italian name and a voice of such
rare beauty, of pure "bel canto" that
fair took my breath away. I turned
to my husband and predicted
"There she Is, the Aida of tomorrow, my search is over".'1 promptly
contacted relatives and friends and
generally spread the word. Well, my
friends, my prediction has to to
pass, sooner than I had expected.
The Aida on Christmas Day was
Aprile Millo - my Iil\le soprano of the
competition. What a voice!ll What a
performance!ll The clarity, the
purity, the poignancy, the pianis-,
simil Ohl! the pianlssimi, with 'un fil
di voce' that simply faded away into
the orchestra. Just perfect. The
tears, the anguish, the passion, the
despair, the pain, the love, were all
so very real. She has it all, my
• friends, she has It all. She has
already captured Verona and is in
much demand and no wonderlll

Dear Aprile - there are many, m~ny
singers who are, what I call muslCllI
technicians. Perfect sight readers
and perfect tempo keepers. Able,
competent and mostly pleasing to
the ear, but very few a,re b~essed
with that extra .somethmg In the
voice. God has seen fit to grant it!O
you, to trust it ,to you. Treasur~ It,
guard It. Use It Wisely. Just thl.~k,
you have in your hands the ability
with this rare gnt and, indeed, the
responsibility, to give untold pleasure to the whole world, for ma~y
years to come. We are sorely In
need of exceptions like you. Gone
are the days when th~ was more
the rule. The operatiC world of
today, must cherish and nurture the
likes of you and cannot afford
anymore losses.

As usual I have digressed. Let us
return to the opera. Dolora Zojick's
Amneris was extremely good, not
yet a Simionato, Stignani or 'CosSOI\O but she had some really
love~ moments. Placido Domingo
has, without doubt, a true, heroic
tenor voice. His rendering. of
"Celeste Aida" was evident proof of
th is. How I wish he had not failed
us in the last duet "0 terra addio",
I hope and pray' that "the powers
that be" will not, do an "Elena

fact that Apnle was so perfect
accentuated his falsemo in the la~t

the more, having heard 1n person,
and having had the great honour to
sing with, during the eleven o'clock
High Mass, the greatest exponent
ever of this most difficult and most
bea~tnul sound to come from the
human throat. Who else could I be
referring to but Beniamino Gigli. For
me, as for my parents before me,
our favourite tenor of all time. We
were literally brought up with the
glorious sound of this tenor echoing
through our home. I do know that
my father never missed any of his
London performances and took me
with him as soon as ,I reacl,1ed the
age of appreciation. There must be
very few of this recordings not
sitting In the family collection. How
often, in my mind, do I "hear" him
and TebalCli singing together.
Phewlll Can you imagine it? If only
they had been contemporarieslll It
would perhaps have been too perfect, just too much to ask......
Digressing again. I very much liked
Dimitri Kavratos' King of Egypt. Not
a Pinza certainly, but a basso to
follow, nevertheless. I sincerely look
forward to hearing more of this
lovely, easy voice. I am sure ve~i
would have been well pleased With
James Levine's conducting and
interpretation and Sonja Frisell's
direction. Bravi and grazie to them,
the rest of the Company and the
Met. for putting it on.
P.S. I have already phoned my Zia
Pierina in America and she fully
agrees with me about Aprile Millo.
At the same time, I hastily assured
her, before she verbally attacked
me, as, she did after my Callas
article (October 1977 and repeat
October 1987), that Tebaldi is still
my idol, despite my apprecia,tion
and recognition of other artISts.

What better way to sta'rt the new
year than with two recordings,' of
Verdi's masterpieces Rigoletto and
The Requiem.' Both are conducted
by Italians who have the works in
their, respective blood.
Rigol!ltto (EMI CD7496052) is con• Mcted by Riccardo Muti and right
from the start I am going to say that
to my ears this has been musically
the most revealing recording, since
the old GobbVSerafin set. That of
course, is in ,good Mono. The new
set, has the ,latest Digitalsound and
very excellent it isl
This is the first recording of the new
Ricordi critical edition. The edition
amends many mistakes found in
earlier printed sources. Some prominent notes are changed: at the
end of "Caro nome'" and in Rigoletto's second" act aria. Improvements alsO in rhytllmic note such as
at the beginning
of the opera in the
•
"festa di Ballo". Muti ensures that
he ..
follows, what is In the printed
score so, of course, no top notes in
.
No matter, this
., is still a great
Rlgoletto. The way MuU shapes the
drama as a wholeleavesyou in no
doubt that this is a masterpiece of
an opera. In scene 2 act 1 when
Rigoletto is accosted by Sparafucile
the assassin who offers' his services, Muti makes the singers
almost whisper . their' lines. This
gives an amazing chilling effect to
the w!lole scene and a warning of
what's to come. The Sparafucile is
the Russian bass Patta Burchuladze, and the best on record. And
what " a pleasure .to hear three
Italians in the principal roles. Zancanaro is a younger sounding Rigoletto that we normally hear. But
what feeling he puts into the role.
His "Cortigiani" is so heartfelt. The
Gllda;is sung by Daniela Dessi a
lyric spinto, a stronger voice than is
normally heard in the role. But
again this benefits the part in the
Inn scene when Gilda gives up her
life to save the Duke. No wilting
drip this, but a woman prepared to
die for the man she loves.
Vincenzo La Scala is Duke,
although well sung and in
character, he is' certainly no
match for Di Stefano or
Pavarotti in vocal panache or
ardor. But he, too,. is in
character and knows what the
part is about.
For the best Rigoletto both
yocal and dramatically, you
. must turn to Gobbi, Di Stefano
and Callas under Serafin
(CDS7 4759-8). This Muti runs
it a close second and, of

has the music in his bones. His old
recording has been felt by many to
be the perforl!lance by which others

which calls for a true spinto voice

you have the. hushed tension of the
choir's whispers in the same movement that are so telling. His soloists
are a uniform team. Not so good as
the Shaw set on Telarc but very
close. Sharon Sweet is the
soprano. Again an American like
Dunn on the Shaw set. Here is a
true' spinto voice able. to do full
justice to the music. She just lacks
that final pure floating sound in the
final Requiem. Something Dunn
brings to the part. The rest of the
soloists are also Americans.
Florence Quivar is no Cossotto, but
she brings an awa~eness to the line
that is most mOVing. Curry for Shaw
has that extra bit of tone, but Quivar
is a very close second. The :tenor
Vinson Cole at times sounds like a·
young Corelli, occasionally thrilling;
He misses the purer tone that
Hadley brings to the line for Shaw,
but there again Hadley could. do
with that extra strength in the "Ingemisco'!. Swings and roundabouts.
The least pleasing' singing comes
from the bass Simon Estes. He just
seems to be singing the part and
very little else. The voice is big 'and
a little rough at Um.es. Plishka on
the rival set may not have as large
a voice but it is certainly more
pleasing and more aware of what
the words mean.
I would recommend the Shaw
above all (CD 80152) but the Giulini
as a very close second. Both have
excellent sound and both have a
spiritual awareness and strength
that other recordings lack.

Apple Fritters

250 gr farina
9 oz flour
1 uovo
1 egg
sale
pinch of salt
1/8 litro di acqua}
1/4 pint of water}
1/8 litro di latte} misto

2 large apples

a little caster sugar
Metodo
Mettete la farina in una •terrina con
un
pizzico
di
sale,

I'uovo, latte e acqua. Mescolate bene finche' ottenete
una pastella piutosto liquida.' Pelate le mele e
tagliatele in spicchi sottili.Unitile alia pastella. Lasciatela riposare in' un luogo' tiepido per circa un'ora.
Versate cucchiaie della pastella in abbondante olio,
facendo dorare" le fritelline da una parte e I'altra.
Scolatele.· Sp6lverizzateie Con zucehero semolato.
Servitele.
Method
Place the f1our,salt, egg, milk and water in a bowl; Stir
all the -ingredients together; until you obtain a not too
,thick cream. Peel the apples and cut them into thin
quarter slices. Mix them into the cream. Leave for one
hour in warmish place. Put spoonfuls of the cream into
plE!.nty of hot oil and fry the "fritelle" turning them over
until they are golden on both sides. Drain. Coat them
with caster sugar and serve.

Ingredienti
Ingredients
120 gr riso
5 oz rice
1/2 Iitro di latte
1 pint milk
25 gr burro
1 oz butter
20 gr zucchero semolato
1 oz caster sugar
1 Iimone
1 lemon
3uova

80 gr di farina

3 oz flour
2 cucchiai di Rhun
2 tablespoon of rum

Lessate il riso nel latte. Dopo cinque minuti
aggiungete iI burro, un pizzico di sale, 10 zucchero e la
scorza grattugiata del Iimone. Quando iI riso sara'
pronto, lasciatelo raffredare. Poi aggungete i tre tuorli,
il Rhum e la farina. Mescolate bene. Lascite riposare
per un ora. Montate a neve ben sode i Ire albumi, e
uniteli al riso, mescolando con delicatezza. Fate
friggere iI composto a cucchiate in abbondante olio.
Girate le fritelle.· Scolatele e posatele su carta
assorbente. Cospargetele con zucchero semolato. e
servitele.
