Language courses:
The University of Genova organizes courses in Italian for foreign students. The major aim of the
courses is to provide the students with the linguistic tools which will enable them to make the
best of their stay in Genova.
The courses, entrusted by the University to the Dipartimento di Italianistica, Romanistica, Arti e
Spettacolo of the Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia (scientific responsible: Professor Claudia Caffi),
are free and open to:
- students involved in EU funded schemes (Socrates-Erasmus, Leonardo and other EU mobility
programmes);
- students enrolled at the University of Genova through international university agreements.
Admission is also open to non-EU students resident abroad:
- who enrol for the first year of an undergraduate course, a specialist degree, a specialization or a
period of research (Ph.D);
- who enrol for individual training programmes;
- who enrol for a Masters degree (1st or 2nd level) and other postgraduate courses.
Structure and duration of the courses
The courses are of 40 hours and may be intensive (10 hours a week) or non-intensive (4-6 hours
a week).
The starting dates are the following:
- intensive course: 8 September 2003
- non-intensive course: 13 October 2003
- intensive course: 2 February 2004
- non-intensive course: 8 March 2004.
The courses are divided into levels from A1 (breakthrough) to C2 (mastery) in keeping with the
criteria laid down by the Common European Framework of Reference for Modern Languages of
the Council of Europe.
The students are to sit for an entrance test.
The classes are established on the basis of the test results - the test usually coincides with the
beginning of the course - and do not exceed 25 students.
All the teachers are specialized in T.I.F.L. (Teaching Italian as a Foreign Language).
Students completing the course will receive an attendance certificate bearing the total hours attended. The certificate may be presented to the students’ original university that will assign
credits according to its own rules.
