activities. Short introducing of the foreigner delegations. Exchange of gifts.

15.00 – 19.00 Guided tour of Lecce, the capital of the province and the pearl of Barocco. Because of
the soft limestone that’s easy to work, Lecce became the center for the ornate architecture called the
barocco leccese and the city is filled with Baroque monuments. Lecce’s architectural history can be
surveyed in one sweep across the main piazza, Saint Oronzo. Towering above the scene is a statue of
Lecce’s patron saint (Saint Oronzo) perched atop a 25-metre-high marble pillar from Roman times
that had been one of two marking the end of the Appian way, stretching across Italy to Brindisi.Next to
the square is the half-uncovered Roman amphitheater, which was once big enough to seat up to 15,000
people. It was discovered in 1908, having been lost in the 1500s. Excavations were carried out under
Mussolini, who was intent on rebuilding a national sense of empire. In the process, the renaissance-era
town hall on the square’s edge was demolished, and municipal buildings erected instead. And last but

not least, Basilica of Santa Croce, on Via Umberto I, has a richly decorated facade and is considered
the emblem of the city .

10.00 Guided tour of Otranto and view of the sea and the southern coast. Otranto is often called the
pearl of Salento. Salento is the southern part of Puglia and Otranto is on the eastern coast of Salento
off of the Adriatic Sea. Aside from its beauty, Otranto has much historical significance: it is most
remembered for Federico II whose castle is still visitable today; and it is remembered for the invasion
of the Turks in 1480: the surviving 800 citizens, known as ‘the martyrs of Otranto’, were beheaded and
their skulls can be seen behind glass in the cathedral of the old city center. The cathedral is most
noted, however, for the mosaics covering the floors portraying the tree of life, mythological scenes,
and a zodiac with the signs of the constellations. Perhaps more than anything else, visitors flock to the
many shops in the old city center as well as dine in quaint sidewalk restaurants.

presented. Discussion and designing of work plans for future development of created network”: Main
themes (1) town twinning role in intercultural dialogue; (2) Europe for Citizens and town twinnings
network for fostering local traditions through a strong cooperation on future projects.
Speaches by istitutional represantatives: Mayor of Martano; Representative of each delegation- Sala

10.30 Sightseeing of Martano The main attraction in the town is the Baronial Castle or Aragona
Castle, largely rebuilt in the 15th century retaining some features of the previous century, while the
biggest churches are those devoted to Madonna dell'Assunta (of the Assumption) and to Madonna del
Rosario. The town also owns very stilish Palaces of the 17th century, the highest Menhir in Apulia
Region (Santu Totaru menhir, 4.80 m) and an ancient monastery (order of Cistercensi Fathers)
devoted to the Madonna of the Consolation.
