Workshop aims
The regenerative medicine with its potential to repair and
replace tissues and organs, is offering great expectations
for the medical treatments of the future and it is
contributing to the development of a new generation
of diagnostics and therapeutics. Many of them are of
human origin and prepared by different techniques to
obtain life-saving therapies or to improve the quality of
life, e.g. the treatment of severe burns, the delivery of
autologous stem cells in peripheral ischemia and the
transplant of pancreatic islands in diabetic patients. A
very fervent research in this field has developed several
innovative products that are now tested in clinical phase
like decellularized tissues (tracheas, cardiac valves etc.)
that allow to reduce immunosuppressive regimens and
the occurrence of graft versus host disease (GVHD).
The availability of very complex tissue preparations, some
of which in combination with drugs and medical devices,
is a new challenge for all the stakeholders involved,
including regulatory bodies that have to evaluate the
quality and robustness of new manufacturing processes,
as well as the safety and clinical follow up in patients.
The aim of the meeting is to illustrate the technical,
regulatory and scientific aspects of these innovative
products and to outline the state of the art through
experienced testimonials of the academic, healthcare
and industrial sectors.
