ARCHITONIC TREND ANALYSIS
TILES & SANITARY WARE 2015
Architonic is the world’s leading research tool for the specification of premium architectural and design products.
Our curated database currently provides information about more than 200,000 products from 1,500 brands and
6,200 designers. 16 million architects, interior designers and design enthusiasts annually choose Architonic as their
guide to the very best. This gives us an insight into developments in the architecture and design markets, which
we would like to share with our community. For Cersaie 2015, we have identified the top-ten most popular ceramic
tile & mosaic and sanitary ware brands on architonic.com that are exhibiting at the fair. In addition, we’ve also
created a ranking of the ten most-viewed floor and wall tiles on architonic.com, also from Cersaie 2015 exhibitors.
All rankings shown are based on traffic information collected on architonic.com. The brand rankings are based on
the number of relevant search queries entered in the text search field on architonic.com. The product ranking is
based on the number of called-up product sheets on architonic.com, which depends on different traffic sources
linking to the respective product sheets, such as product-group navigation on architonic.com, Google relevance of
the product sheet itself, and advertising campaigns linking to the product sheet among others. The rankings are
limited to Architonic Member brands exhibiting at Cersaie 2015 and their products. All information was collected in
the period 1 January–30 June 2015.

SCHOLTEN & BAIJINGS
If you had to pick one material to work with for the next three years, what would
it be? Architonic posed this very question to a number of renowned designers. Their
reflections provide the basis of our new ‘Materials Tendencies’ series. We caught up
with Dutch Design duo Stefan Scholten and Carole Baijings to talk about their material
preferences and their passion for ceramics.
‘Our 2016/ project uses the specialist porcelain skills found in the town of Arita,
Japan. It’s opened up a world of possibilities, which we wish to explore more. It’s actually a good idea to focus on just one material to get a greater understanding of it.’
In 2013, Scholten & Baijings started working in Arita, the oldest Japanese porcelain
region. After their ‘Colour Porcelain’ collection for 1616/ Arita Japan, they decided to
continue working with porcelain and were invited to take part in this initiative on the
400th anniversary of Arita.
Baijings: ‘In the 17th century, Arita porcelain was transported to Europe by the ships
of the Dutch East India Company. The Netherlands has had a long relationship with
Japanese craft businesses! Together with Teruhiro Yanagihara, artistic director of
1616/ Arita Japan, we are the project’s art directors. The idea – inspired by the
founding of Arita in 1616 – is to link 16 international designers to 16 artisanal porcelain companies in Japan. We are fascinated by Arita’s connection with the past, but
also with the possibilities for new production technologies. At the ceramic technical
research laboratory in Arita, they have invented a way to produce porcelain that is
12% lighter. New methods of production that use CNC milling machines and injection
moulding can be further exploited. We will encourage the designers to combine these
new technologies with traditional handcraft processes.’
Carole Baijings and Stefan Scholten in Milan, 2015

Baijings, Photography Inga Powilleit
‘There are not many industries left that have 400 years of history and knowledge,’
adds Scholten. ‘This is a great draw for the designers involved, who will become
immersed in the culture and the porcelain-making traditions, the structure and geography of the industry and the many skills of the local makers.’
The 2016/ project brings together the porcelain-making skills of potteries in Arita, with the talent of 16 international designers: Tomás Alonso, Scholten & Baijings,
BIGGAME, Kueng Caputo, Pauline Deltour, Saskia Diez, Stefan Diez, Shigeki Fujishiro,
Christian Haas, Christien Meindertsma, Kirstie van Noort, Ingegerd Råman, Leon Ransmeier, Studio Wieki Somers, TAF, Teruhiro Yanagihara. 16 different works and collections of porcelain objects for the home will be launched in spring 2016.

EMOTION MEETS ARCHITECTURE – VILLEROY & BOCH’S
NEW TILE COLLECTION
CENTURY UNLIMITED
Creating something new that is based on the spirit of a company‘s own history, referring to tradition without merely copying past achievements – there are only a few
producers that manage to do this as successfully as Villeroy & Boch does with its
CENTURY UNLIMITED collection. This series of tiles, inspired by the legendary 19thcentury Mettlach tiles, reinterprets a milestone in the company’s history and places it
in a contemporary context. The result is a charming synthesis of the historic and the
modern that immediately looks both new and familiar. The series consists of porcelain
stoneware tiles with motifs that were designed along the lines of historic patterns.
In the mid-19th century, entrepreneur and amateur archaeologist Eugen von Boch
came up with the idea of creating flooring based on the example of ancient Roman
floor mosaics. This resulted in tiles with various designs – the famous Mettlach tiles –
being produced on an industrial scale in the large factory in Mettlach.
COSMO VISION
However, the manufacturing quality and the range of options nowadays far exceed the
wildest dreams of people in the 19th century. CENTURY UNLIMITED offers a choice of
nine basic unicolour tiles in colours ranging from warm beige and brown through cool
blue, grey and black to bright and lively cotto. They are matched by the three motif
lines of Triangle, Circle and Diamonds, each of which features nine ornaments varying
from subtle to decorative. This results in a total of 36 designs that bring character
and atmosphere to home environments, restaurants, bars and public areas.
The reference to the company’s history does not mean that this collection is exclusively preoccupied with the past. On the contrary, in 2016 Villeroy & Boch will be adding
new tiles to this series in monochrome hues particularly suited to contemporary architecture. And the rest of the company‘s tile collection for 2016 also shows how the
designs of this company with its long tradition reflect today’s creative spirit. Under the
motto ‘emotion meets architecture’, tiles have been developed that specifically infuse
contemporary architecture with the emotion and warmth that really define a room‘s
atmosphere.
The COSMO VISION series of tiles, for example, uses the raw look of in-situ concrete to
provide an authentic loft atmosphere. The DRIFT series, in natural beiges and browns,
takes its inspiration from the Far East’s paper-folding art of origami. Completely different is the NEWTOWN collection, with attractive stone textures artistically reinterpreted and combined with designs that have a historic look. Another newcomer to the
range is the CREATIVE SYSTEM 4.0 colour concept, a colour matrix allowing different
styles to be combined on walls to provide various atmospheres in rooms. This enables
complex tile arrangements to be achieved for all rooms and for all moods – always
unique and different, and always with the level of style and quality for which the
name of Villeroy & Boch is renowned.

Entrepreneurial culture
and sense of responsibility
Casalgrande Padana has been manufacturing stoneware slabs since 1960. We have always worked to
foster the integration between product culture and
entrepreneurial culture, to be interpreted as a sense
of responsibility and sharing. We feel responsible
for the environment, for those who work with us
and for customers, to whom we guarantee products striking the perfect balance between ethics
and aesthetics, such as for instance in the Bios
Ceramics*, our cutting edge stoneware slab line.
Bios Ceramics products reduce environmental

pollution, are self-cleaning and kill bacteria. We
share because we produce culture and enhance
design and wish to share this with the community, starting from the assumption that the sense of
beauty should be experienced as a resource available to all and not as a privilege for the happy few.
This is the meaning attached by Casalgrande
Padana to its entrepreneurial spirit today.
This means placing human beings and the environment always at the heart of all our corporate
strategies.
