Informatica e Sistemistica - University “La Sapienza” – Rome, Italy L. Tombolini Ecotema – Cannaregio 463, Venice, Italy L. Novelli Archimedes – via Tagliamento 9, Rome, Italy Aim: To control boat traffic in a waterway of about 6km length through 13 observation posts (Survey Cells) for real-time monitoring and later time statistical analysis Survey Cell: 3 high resolution network cameras, a PTZ camera for zoom and tracking of the selected target, and 2 computers running the image processing and tracking software Image analysis: Multi-gaussian background subtraction in combination with optical flow analysis to obtain robust image segmentation. Ellipse approximation are computed on the blobs detected Tracking: Observations from the image processing step are used by a multi-hypothesis Kalman filter to track targets over time Live aerial view: Live images are rectified and stitched together to generate a composite top view of the Grand Canal
