Gemelli, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Rome, IT Aim of the course During the first day (theoretical session) the programme will offer participants the opportunity to learn or improve their strategy for a minimally invasive approach to Upper GI surgical oncology. It will include background lectures and step-by-step descriptions of the techniques concerned by the course. The whole second day (Hands-On Session / Cadaver Lab) will consist on a technical workshop practically teaching participants manual skills and new technologies, including the application of the latest HD video-equipment and brand new dissection devices supplied by the course sponsors. Direct “face-to-face” communication with expert teachers will allow all participants to implement their knowledge regarding advanced laparoscopic technical approaches with special focus on Upper GI oncologic procedures. Main topics • D2 plus distal / total gastrectomy • Intracorporeal B II anastomosis and /or Esophago-Jejunal anastomosis • Nodal station n^ 11 • Nodal station n^16b Educational Methods • Participants will be encouraged to interact during plenary lectures (see detailed Day 1 programme) • Hands-on sessions will consist on mentored operations on human cadavers. • Step by step application of basic principles elucidated on Day 1 will be applied, starting from trocars positioning and general surgical strategy. • Each participant will choose to perform as the first operator one among the following laparoscopic procedures: distal or total gastrectomy, “D2 plus”-lymphadenectomy, mechanical intracorporeal anastomoses, D3 lymphadenectomy(nodal station n^16 B), distal pancreatectomy (nodal station n^ 11). • Participants will be also requested to assist the procedures of their “table partners”. • 4 cadaver torsos will be available on 4 fully equipped tables : participants will be divided in groups of 3 ; each table will include the presence of 2 surgical tutors + 1 scrub studentnurse. • Technicians and product managers will interact inside the Lab. Ideal participants • General surgeons and surgical oncologists interested in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery of the Upper GI tract.
