“FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS AND PRIVATE LAW IN THE EUROPEAN UNION” Mid-November the ‘Diritti & Regole Laboratorio Interdisciplinare’ of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna will be welcoming to Pisa the researchers involved in the European Research Training Network on the field of ‘Fundamental Rights and Private Law in the European Union’. Nine universities throughout the whole of Europe co-operate in this international project that aims at charting the horizontal effect of fundamental rights in European private law. The research is based on a bottom-up approach, investigating case law in Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, England, Sweden, the Netherlands and Poland. The project thus aspires to contribute to a further clarification of the interconnection between constitutional law and private law. The evaluative meeting in November marks the halftime of the four-year project. In the context of this meeting, on Saturday 13th of November a public event is organised on the theme of European constitutionalisation. After an introduction offering public and private law perspectives on ‘Fundamental Rights and Private Law in the European Union’, some of the co-ordinators of the various research units will present the summary results of the project, touching upon such topics as: the effect of fundamental rights in domestic private law; harmonisation of private law in Europe; differences and similarities between the approaches adopted in the various countries; the role of the courts in the protection of fundamental rights between private parties.
