The Pontifical Urbaniana University is an academic institution belonging to the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples. The origins of the Urbaniana date back to 1st August 1627, when Pope Urban Urban VIII decided to establish the Urban College with the Bull Immortalis Dei Filius, which was the very first educational institution within the Congregation De Propaganda Fide. The University is located in the heart of Rome, close to S. Peter's Church, on the Gianicolo hill, inside a large green park, which ensures its guests quiteness and concentration. Location: Pontificia Università Urbaniana Via Urbano VIII, 16 00165 Rome Welcome Reception at Castel Sant'Angelo Monday, May 30th - 07.00 pm On Monday 30th, from 07.00 pm, a welcome cocktail will be offered at Castel Sant’Angelo Terrace. Castel Sant’Angelo, on the west bank of the Tiber river and close to Saint Peter’s Church, is one of the most impressive sites in Rome, linked inextricably with the history of the city itself. Begun originally by the Emperor Hadrian in the early second century AD, it was completed by Antoninus Pius in 139 and intended as a mausoleum for members of the Imperial family. During the troubled third century, the Emperor Aurelian fortified the structure and included it as part of its walls, and it remained of vital defensive importance. On the ground floor the winding ramp designed for the funeral cortege is an impressive piece of Roman engineering, whilst on the upper floors, features include a display of ancient weapons, some impressive trompe l’oeil frescoes and the small but exquisitely decorated bathroom of pope Clement VII. Location: Castel Sant'Angelo Lungotevere Castello, 50 00193 Rome Social Guided Tour Colosseum and Roman Forum Wednesday, June 1st - 02.30 pm “As long as the Colosseum stands, Rome will stand; and when Rome falls, so will the world”. One of the seven wonders of the world, the Colosseum, a mammoth amphitheater, was begun by Emperor Vespasian and inaugurated by Titus in the year 80. Today it is the symbol of Rome worldwide and is a major tourist attraction. Close to the Colosseum, it takes place the ancient Roman Forum. Before becoming the political, administrative and religious centre of Rome, the Forum was an inhospitable marshland. From the late 7th century CE, after the area was drained and reclaimed, several monuments were progressively built on it: first the buildings for political, religious and commercial activities, then, during the 2nd c. BCE, the civilian basilicas, where judicial activities took place. By the end of the Republican era, the ancient Roman Forum was already fully built up so that only a few monuments were added during the Empire: the Temple of Vespasian, that of Antoninus and Faustina, the monumental Arch of Septimius Severus, the imposing Basilica of Maxentius. The visit will include a short explanation of the Trajan's Market. Trajan's Market is a large complex of ruins located on the Via dei Fori Imperiali, at the opposite end to the Colosseum. The surviving buildings and structures, built as an integral part of Trajan's Forum and nestled against the excavated flank of the Quirinal Hill, present a living model of life in the Roman capital and a glimpse at the continuing restoration in the city, which reveals new treasures and insights about Ancient Roman architecture. Meeting point: Pontificia Università San Tommaso D'Aquino Largo Angelicum, 1 00184 Rome Gala Dinner at Palazzo Brancaccio Thursday, June 2nd - 07.30 pm Brancaccio Palace is the last Roman Patrician Palace built in 1880 in the heart of the eternal city. Located on Colle Oppio, near Emperor Nero's "Domus Aurea" and the seven hills, between Colosseum and the famous Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Princess Mary Elisabeth Field, American wife of Salvatore Brancaccio, in 1879 relied on architect Gaetano Koch for the construction of the palace located in a beautiful, natural old park among roman ruins, centuries old plants and fountains. In the Park you can also admire the small and charming Hunting Lodge turned into a Coffee House, rich in decorations and painted by Francesco Gay. Location: Palazzo Brancaccio Viale del Monte Oppio, 7 00184 Rome OPTIONAL TOURS FOR ACCOMPANYING PERSONS Walking in the heart of Rome searching for dark stories and obscures crimes Tuesday, June 31th - 07.00 pm A suggestive walk from Ponte S. Angelo to Ponte Sisto, passing through Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori. The urban scenario, made of squares, narrow lanes and fragments of a Rome which does belong to the past , gives the area a misterious and magical atmosphere. The walk will end with a typical Italian pizza and beer. The Roman Ghetto was a Jewish ghetto established in 1555 in the Rione Sant'Angelo, in the area surrounded by present-day Via del Portico d'Ottavia, Lungotevere dei Cenci, Via del Progresso and Via di Santa Maria del Pianto, close to the River Tiber and the Theatre of Marcellus. With the exception of brief periods under Napoleon from 1808 to 1815 and under the Roman Republics of 1798-99 and 1849, the ghetto of Rome was controlled by the papacy until the capture of Rome in 1870.
