Abstract
In our study we have evaluated the theme of the platelet fatty acid composition in subjects with a clinical diagnosis of Major
Depression (MD), in subjects with a clinical diagnosis of Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD) according to the coronary angiography
and in control subjects. We have analyzed all the groups without taking in account therapies, gender and age. As far as we
know, the platelet fatty acid composition has never been analyzed before, in MD.
The results obtained with the Self Organizing Map (SOM) show the evidence of three fatty acids, Arachidonic Acid (AA),
Linoleic Acid (LA), and Palmitic Acid (PA) in a peculiar position with respect to the biochemical characterization of MD and
three fatty acids, Arachidonic Acid (AA), Linoleic Acid (LA) and Oleic Acid (OA) in a peculiar position with respect to the
biochemical characterization of the IHD. Bio molecular considerations are made about the possibility of controlling positive
changes in platelet viscosity, in both pathologies.

*: Massimo Cocchi was born in Bologna on 8 October 1945. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1971 at the
University of Bologna. In 1990 he has been appointed as honorary lecturer of Nutrition Biochemistry (Scottish Agricultural
College). He has been appointed as Professor of Nutrition Biochemistry of the Scottish Agricultural College (1995-1998). In
1998 he received the title of Professor in Perpetuity of the Scottish Agricultural College. In 1999 he has founded the
scientific journal “Progress in Nutrition” (Impact Factor since 2009). He has been elected President of the Scientific
Association “ARNA”, Associazione Ricercatori Nutrizione e Alimenti (2003–2009). In 2005 he has been appointed as
Contract Professor of Food and Human Nutrition at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Bologna today
changed in Nutrition Biochemistry. In 2008 he has been appointed as Full Professor of Nutrition Biochemistry at the
L.U.de.S. University, Lugano, Switzerland. In 2005 he has been appointed as President of the Italian Society of
Experimental Biology, Section of Bologna “Oliviero Mario Olivo”. In 2005 he started, with Lucio Tonello, to study the
platelet fatty acids in groups of patients (Depressive and Ischemic) realizing a combination between Biochemistry and
Artificial Neural Network which has allowed to identify the depressive and the ischemic population against the apparently
normal people. On the argument many papers, meetings and conferences have been hold. In 2008, Kioto Prize
nomination.
