he Frankfurt Book Fair embodies the most important international meeting place for
anyone who operates in the publishing industry. The numbers provided by its
organisers show the relevance of such event: more than 7,300 exhibitors for 100
countries, 299,000 visitors and more than 10,000 journalists. The Frankfurt Book
Fair is an exceptional occasion for Italian publishers to be present with all of their
best strengths in order to guarantee the interest that our country has always been
dedicating to books, and to show our willingness to develop such an ancient and
modern instrument for people and culture to communicate and dialogue.
In particular, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities has committed itself in promoting
and enhancing books and the Italian publishing sector. A concrete evidence of such a commitment
stands in the development of the Italian pavilion Punto Italia. It was conceived and structured by
the Italian Association of Publishers in collaboration with the National Institute for Foreign Trade
and it will be much more spacious this year than it has ever been (about 300 square metres) in order
to receive a greater number of publishers. Our significant presence intends to allow specialists to
enlarge their economic as well as cultural sphere, helping them building bridges toward the future
and giving them access to useful information about the World Book Market. The Frankfurt Book
Fair is also an opportunity to examine the state of the art of the publishing industry in the world
and, as regards to Italy, to analyse the production growth index and sales proceeds supplied by the
Italian Association of Publishers and by the National Institute of Statistics.
The Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, which uses to participate in the event through
the Punto Italia, will enjoy this year a dedicated institutional area. The area will propose a selection
of volumes edited by the General Direction for Libraries, Cultural Institutes and Authors’ Rights and
by the Centre for Books and Reading, as well as a series of valuable publications from the General
Direction for Landscape, Fine Arts, Contemporary Architecture and Art. The volumes exhibited –
chosen amongst the extremely numerous works that the Ministry publishes each year – are meant
to represent the technical-scientific research carried out by central and territorial Offices for Cultural
Heritage. They may be considered as a valuable instrument to diffuse and share Italian cultural
heritage, both on the national territory and abroad. The dedicated area will also provide visitors with
information about the many projects recently financed by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and
Activities aimed at achieving better communication and accessibility to information for partially
sighted people through special circuits.

its activity with an
ambitious project of
exploring the
historical value of
photographic images
as heritage and
memory elements
and enhancing public
and private institutions' archives of images. It
seeks to carry out a methodological
comparison on themes like preservation,
restoration, training, cataloguing,
digitalization and dissemination of the world
photographic heritage by creating a virtual
network linking national and international
public and private institutions. The present
issue presents the Acts of the Meeting
promoted by the Department of Visual Arts of

Luigi Vanvitelli (Naples, 1770 – Caserta, 1773)
was an exceptional architect, painter and
actor on the artistic scene. He worked at the
Bourbon’s court from 1750 to 1773 for whom
he conceived the Palace of Caserta, his most
famous achievement.

The exhibit, which
proposes works of
art temporarily
borrowed as well as
permanent furniture
of the Royal Palace
of Caserta, goes
through the vivid and
innovative cultural
climate that Luigi
Vanvitelli created
around him. It also recollects some other
creations of artists who worked at the court. It
shows paintings inspired by the architect’s
bright visions or paintings that represent
various religious and pagan subjects created
for churches and houses of the Neapolitan
nobility, allegoric triumphs of the ruling
dynasty, official portraits of the Royal House
and Neapolitan aristocracy, celebrative
images of the Court, sublime visions of the
erupting Vesuvius, sculptures and furniture. It
aims to present in an innovative way
Vanvitelli’s activity as well as the work of his
pupils and the artists whom he surrounded
himself. The exhibit provides the visitor with
new clues, further analysis and interesting
discoveries.

The exhibit is the
first monographic
review dedicated to
Amico Aspertini. By
re-discovering the
essential role he
played in his original
context, it clearly
aims to give back
the right value to a
great artist who has
been largely unknown to the public. More
than 120 works have been gathered from
various European and American museums to
give a full vision of the work of such an
eccentric and restless interpreter. The
exhibit also tries to illustrate the works of
some other artists with whom he had
contacts. Selected engravings, precious
illuminated codices, ceramics and
archaeological pieces are also collected to
rebuild one of Italy’s major artistic period, in
particular in some towns, like Bologna, that
were true leading centres for culture and arts
during the first half of the 16th Century.
Amico Aspertini (Bologna, 1474 – Bologna,
1552) was one of Bologna’s most eclectic
painter of the first half of the 16th Century. He
attended Giovanni II Bentivoglio’s court and
worked with Francesco Francia and Lorenzo
Costa. Then, under Papal government, he
5
succeeded in pursuing his activity and went
on travelling through Italy. He met Raffaello,
Dürer, Michelangelo, Filippino Lippi, Perugino
and other famous artists.

The anthological
exhibit celebrates
the talents of Andrea
Brustolon, reviewing
his life and artistic
career.
Approximately 100
works of outstanding
quality are
presented, which
display his peerless
decorative virtuosity, which range from the
ecclesiastic furnishings to furniture and are
compared to those painters and sculptors of
his age who worked at the same time as the
great painter and carver. This anthology of
works afford the public the chance to follow
the creative progress of Brustolon and admire
his matchless ability to transform wood into
lifelike realism together with picturesque
expression.
Andrea Brustolon (Belluno, 1662 - 1732) was
one of the most original sculptors and wood
carvers of the Venetian Baroque age. He was
defined by Honoré de Balzac as the
Michelangelo of wood for his technical
perfection and expressive intensity.
On the occasion of
the Fifth Centennial
of the of the death of
Andrea Mantegna, an
exhibition
demonstrates the
relations between
the artist and the
Gonzaga family,
concentrating on his
masterpiece: the
Camera Picta, painted between 1465 and
1474. Through three sections, the exhibition
presents the various portraits linked to
members of the court portrayed in the
chamber and the other important personalities
in the history and culture of the age; the
entire corpus of documents signed by
Mantegna and finally the written culture in the
court by means of letters and manuscripts
regarding culture which were desired by the
rulers Ludovic II and Barbara of Brandenburg.
The exhibition catalogue is enhanced by the
articles on historical studies, as well as
preservation and restauration activities
carried outy in the Castello di San Giorgio and
in particular, the new monitoring equipment
which has been set up in the Camera Picta.
Andrea Mantegna (Isola di Carturo, 1431 Mantova, 1506), outstanding artist of the
Italian Fifteenth Century, a painter and
architect who was defined by Adolfo Venturi
“the founder of humanistic painting in
northern Italy”.

This work presents
the most interesting
outputs of a vast
survey on the
ecclesiastical
patrimony of the
Diocese of Saluzzo
and bears witness to
the first action of
conservation carried out on local heritage. It
gathers more than 16,000 analytical charts
and pictures that have been drawn up during
an impressive cataloguing that recorded, from
1997 to December 2005, all 91 diocesan
parishes and places of worship built in the
municipality of Saluzzo (Province of Cuneo). It
gives evidence of the important historical,
artistic and religious heritage created
between the Romanesque era and the 20th
Century: frescos, oil on canvas paintings,
wooden liturgical treasures, precious clothes,
jewellery and votive pictures. It aims to
nourish the debate on the preservation,
conservation and enhancement of past
heritage and to give a valuable account of
restoration interventions made in the last 30
years.

This publication is a
tribute to Pier
Jacopo Bonacolsi,
called “the
Ancient”. It includes
contributions by
researchers and
international
specialists that go
through his life and
his works. After
many centuries of silence, critics and the
larger public are offered the occasion to
rediscover this artist who was a goldsmith,
sculptor, medallist, antiquarian at the
Gonzaga’s courts. For the first time a
monographic exhibit is entirely dedicated to
him, with about a hundred works coming from
the most prestigious national and
international institutions (among them, the
Kunsthistoriches Museum of Vienna) that form
an outstanding event, though temporary, as
they re-compose the original collection of the
Ducal Palace of Mantova.
Pier Jacopo Alari Bonacolsi also known as
“The Ancient” (1460?-1528), was one of
Mantova most famous and renowned artists.
He was multi-talented man and he played an
essential role at Francesco II Gonzaga and

the most important
artistic phenomena
of the European 18th

Veduta painting. Of this, Canaletto is
undoubtedly the absolute main player as

Bernardo Bellotto and Francesco Guardi, for
a total of approximately one hundred works,
coming from the greatest museums of the
world, public and private institutions, whose
succession not only illustrates the various

The exhibit proposes
some 160 sculptures
and paintings by
Antonio Canova and
some highly
interesting points of
comparison with
Raffaello, Tiziano
and other
contemporary
artists. It chooses in
Forlì – where the artist created three major
works – the ideal starting point in order to
prove the close link between the town and the
so-called “modern Fidia” and his artistic
production, which was totally inspired by the
classical ideal. The exhibit compares marbles,
plasters, bas-reliefs, sketches, paintings and
drawings by Canova to Ancient models that
inspired him and to some of his contemporary
artists.
Antonio Canova (Possagno, 1757 – Venice,

The most complete

monographic exhibit
on Antonio Allegri,
better known as
Correggio, is a
tribute to the artist
who brought great
prestige to Parma. It
presents more than a hundred works,
paintings and drawings from his youth to his

the strong personality of this 16th Century
brilliant interpreter who influenced future
artistic trends until the Baroque. To explore
also the context in which he lived and worked,
it proposes a selection of works by his
contemporaries and of some reference places
in the town and province of Parma.
Antonio Allegri called Correggio (Correggio,
1489 - 1534) was one of the major exponents
of the Renaissance. His work is mainly
characterised by his ability in catching the
light, creating new light and shade effects
and achieving impressive spatial deepness.

to Rome on the
occasion of the
Esposizione
internazionale of
1911: as a matter of fact, in a context in
which folk art was collected focused on the
authenticity of the Italian cultural traditions,
the Esposizione gave a great deal of
importance to the traditional clothing. The
catalogue opens with an essay on the
comparison between our day and age and that
of the exhibition at the beginning of the
century. It is then followed by an analysis of
11
the transformation of Sardinian costumes
between the Seventeenth and Eighteenth
centuries. All of the clothes, reproduced in
colour, are supported by explanatory notes on
the typology of the garments and its
characteristic materials, to these we should
add the collection of goldsmiths’ art and the
transcription of documents kept in the
historical archives of the MAT. The publication
of Sardinian costumes and its photographic
documentation, include a broad and detailed
photographic series, which shows the clothes
in all of their decorative details, and the
related catalogue notes.

landscapes became a continuous source of
inspiration.

The exhibit is the
first Italian

dedicated to Cy
Twomby and presents
more than sixty of
his works. It goes
through more than
seventy years of his
long career with
paintings, drawings
and sculptures that tell some key moments of
that period, and accompanies the public
backwards until the Fifties. It aims to make
Twombly’s evasive and sometimes
unfathomable art more intelligible by
introducing the visitors into his atelier: like a
journey into the heart of the artist’s creativity
to understand his modus operandi and sensegiving process, going through the various
periods and steps of his creation. This book is
enriched with essays by Richard Shiff, Tacita
Dean, Nicholas Cullinan and an interview by

On the thirty
anniversary of the
master’s death, the
exhibit aims to cast
light on the so-called
“by De Chirico” or, in
other words, the kind
of painting that is
neither a copy nor a
study but rather a
reflection of the
inspired artist on the inspiring artist.
Therefore, it gives relevance to the
continuous and complex relationship between
De Chirico and the art from the past. A relation
that may be defined as a sort of imaginary
museum born from his willingness to possess
any secret and any material virtue of
“painting” in order to transmit it to his epoch
where all meanings of it have been lost. It
gathers a hundred works (paintings and
drawings and one sculpture) that are
presented in six thematic sections: Mythology
and Archaeology; After the great masters;
Great painting; From Rubens onwards;
Neometaphysics; Works on paper. The
catalogue includes many essays,
contributions, charts and Dacia Maraini’s
interesting interview to the master.
Giorgio De Chirico (Volos, 1888 – Rome, 1978)
was a famous Italian painter and one of the
major exponents of the artistic trend of
Metaphysical painting.

The exhibit, which is
dedicated to the
active role played by
the Della Robbia
family, illustrates
the development and
large diffusion of
glazed earthenware
in Tuscany during the
Renaissance. It
presents about 140
works some of which of an outstanding value
and exhibited for the first time. They tell
about the prolific links between the art of
sculpting glazed earthenware and the “three
sister arts” and “decorative arts”. The public
will understand the new interpretation Luca
Della Robbia gave to this technique and will
discover his great creativity together with
other works by his contemporaries that will
outline the cultural context where he grew up.
This publication casts light on Della Robbia’s
pottery impasto and enamel, on the basis of
the outputs of chemical and physical analysis
that were carried out at the Louvre Museum.

This publication
gives evidence of the
intensive restoration
intervention carried
out on the
Donatello’s David
from June 2007 to
November 2008.
Before its
restoration, the
famous statue was
only subject to ordinary maintenance due to
its delicate shaping and its original gilding
(made with the extremely fragile technique
called “mission”). New laser techniques
14
allowed giving back the statue its ancient
splendour by restoring gold and taking away
the compactness of the dark patina that
covered it. The essays inside this volume,
which are illustrated with graphs, comment
the delicate restoration interventions that
were carried out in a special open-air
laboratory where specialists, researchers and
technicians have been working under the eye
of the public.
Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi called
Donatello (Firenze, 1386-1466) was a famous
Italian sculptor, goldsmith and designer. He is
considered to be one of the fathers of the
Florentine Renaissance.

beginning of the 19th Century until the 1920s.
It shows some eighty works of art coming from
the striking Quadreria dell’Ottocento, the
refined Morone Collection and the storehouse
of Castello Visconteo of Pavia. It recurs to
some key subjects, like women and
landscapes, to make us discover important
traces of the artistic culture that developed in
that town of the Po valley. A town that also
hosted a famous Art Academy, where many
enlightened benefactors met talented artists

The exhibition is
dedicated to the
work and activities
of the Modena artists
Guido Mazzoni and
Antonio Begarelli,
two exceptional
personalities of
Renaissance art
history. The exhibit’s
intention is to
enhance the value of their artistic stature and
to rekindle their appreciation by the public at
large. The exposition contains approximately
sixty works of art, for the most part
sculptures, but also painstakingly selected
paintings and drawings, concerning the period
spanning from 1470 to 1560. The context in
which they were working is studied,
highlighting the importance of their
production within the Po Valley sculpture
production of the period and the vaster artistic
panorama, marked by such important artists
as Ercole de’ Roberti, Giovanni Bellini, Nicolò
dell’Arca, Alfonso Lombardi, Correggio and
Raphael.
Guido Mazzoni (Modena, 1450 - 1516) and
Antonio Begarelli (Modena, 1499 ca. - 1565)
are considered masters of Emelia renaissance
terracotta. They were active with one working
some fifty years after the other, the former
creating features which are more realistic and
detailed, and the second in a more classical
and idealized style.

result of his intense design work. The
overview covers his artistic career and
highlights his sense of measure in as much as
it is a hallmark of modernism, in a continuous
return to the inspiration of the past to return
to the present, tradition and renewal.
Enrico del Debbio (Carrara, 1891 – Roma,

Century Italian architecture, animated by a
great passion, autonomy and coherence with
which all of his design work was imbued.

This volume includes
many essays and
contributions by
specialists that go
through a centurylong history of
medical plants, with
a special attention to
case studies that
illustrate their
therapeutic value. It
is an extraordinary journey inside the book
heritage of the Central National Library in
Rome that takes us to the early times of
Modern medicine. The publication was first
conceived by the famous School of Medicine
of Salerno and illustrates the great
contribution made by institutions, either laic
or religious: the latter have kept in line with a
uninterrupted medical tradition that goes back
to Middle Ages and that has been enriched in
the 16th century with new therapeutic
resources thanks to new species discovered
and brought in by missionaries, like china root
and passionflower. Many themes of great
historic and cultural value are dealt with:
development of pharmacopoeia, medieval
surveys on vegetal medicine, monastic and
laic pharmaceutical schools, autochthonous
and exotic plants, botanical gardens, species
gardens, charlatans. The underlying issue of
this volume is the ultimate search for the
secret power of plants, a precious value that
humankind should be proud of and that
mustn’t be wasted nor lost.

built a display of the objects coming form
museums, libraries as well as Italian and
foreign archives, which are able to summon
the feting and celebrations linked to the most
important moments of the life of princes, from
the unfolding of the seasons, and of the civil

This publication aims
to illustrate the
artistic production of
Lodovico Cardi also
known as “Il Cigoli”
according to three
essential periods of
his life: The
customers from
Figline and the
friendship with
Gregorio Pagani with whom he shared the
passion for “drawing from nature” and
searched a new way to “obtain natural and
true colours”; The step from apprentice to
master; The achievement of the frescos in the
Chiostro Grande of Santa Maria Novella. The
exhibit presents more than fifty works
including self-portraits, drawings, sketches
and works of art by his contemporaries and
proposes an interesting comparison to
underline stylistic resemblances and
differences.
Lodovico Cardi called “Il Cigoli” (Cigoli, Pisa
1559 - Rome, 1613) was a famous Italian
painter and architect. He was trained at the
Florentine school and worked during the
transition period from Mannerism to Baroque.

Catalogo della mostra tenuta a Parigi nel 2009. - ISBN
9788836613366 (€ 34,00)
The Musée du
Luxembourg in Paris
hosts this exhibit on
two major Italian
artists of the
Renaissance: Filippo
Lippi and his son
Filippino. With its 51
selected works, the
exhibit casts light on
the artistic renewal
brought by the artists and their influence on
Florentine painters. Therefore the exhibit shows,
together with the masters’ works of art, some of
the most important works by their collaborators
like Fra Diamante, Domenico Zenobi, Ridolfo
Bagordi (the so-called Ghirlandaio) and Santi di
Tito. Moreover, in this occasion, some other ten
works of art have been restored like the
marvellous Virgin and Child with Saints Stephen
and John, better known as Pala dell’Udienza.
Filippo Lippi (Florence, 1406 - Spoleto, 1469)
was a Carmelite friar. From 1452 to 1466, he had
his atelier in Prato, where he also worked to the
fresco of the Gallery of the Cathedral.
Filippino Lippi (Prato, 1457 – Florence, 1504) is
the son of Filippo and the nun Lucrezia Buti, the
famous model whom he inspired himself in his
paintings. He grew up in Prato in his father’s
atelier where he showed great talent since the
very beginning. He then became apprentice in
Botticelli’s studio. His paintings were full of
mystic and religious tensions and had great
influence on contemporary artists. It also
opened the way to Italian Mannerism, an artistic
trend of the 16th Century.

What emerges is the incomparable importance

Eighteenth Century until the present day, but
also the great deal of attention that Egypt
enjoys still today in Italy.

The exhibit
dedicated to Canova
recollects for the
first time some of his
262 portraits and
gives evidence of the
renown and prestige
he was
acknowledged as a
true “legend” both
for the creativity of
his sculptures and paintings and for his strong
personality. The exhibit opens with the most
studied self-portraits in which the artist
succeeded to express the many states of
mind, then it proposes about forty portraits by
Italian and foreign artists, many “engraved
portraits”, medallions, and even exhibits the
artist’s own clothes and personal
correspondence. On the occasion of the
transfer of the relic of the right hand, from the
Academy of Fine Arts of Venice to Possagno,
the exhibit explores once again the life of
Canova, including his private life, his
relationships with contemporary artists and
intellectuals and with his motherland: it
succeeds in giving a social picture of the
social and worldly life, trends and fashions.
Antonio Canova (Possagno, 1757 – Venice,
1822) was one of the major European sculptors
between the 18th and the 19th centuries. He
interpreted aesthetics according to Johann
Joachim Winckelmann and Anton Raphael
Mengs’ theories.

of the Castle has uncovered paintings by
Nicolò dell’Abate who decorated it around
1540-1543 with the depiction of the Nuptials
of Psyche on the ceiling as well as supporting
figures in the room identified by critics as the
Chamber of Paradise. The sensational
discovery has stirred a painstaking campaign
of restorations and studies which has been
addressed to one of the greatest moments of
artistic, literary and cultural history of
Scandiano and of the Duchy at large: that
promoted by the humanist sensitivity of the
Boiardo family. The volume presents
contributions by several scholars on the theme
of recovering the ancient artistic heritage of
the castle and documenting the restoration
work by Opificio delle Pietre Dure of Florence.
Nicolò dell’Abate (Modena, 1510 ca. –
Fontainebleau, 1571) famous Italian painter
represents a key personage of European
Mannerism, especially active in Soragna,
Busseto, Sassuolo, Reggio Emilia, and
Modena and in the last twenty years of his life
in Paris.

Omaggio a Umberto Boccioni / a cura di = edited by
Bruno Cora, Tonino Sicoli e Cristina Sonderegger. Cinisello Balsamo : Silvana, [2009]. - 191 p. : ill. ;

Catalogo della mostra tenuta a Lugano nel 2009. Testo anche in inglese. - In cop.: Museo d’arte della
Città di Lugano (€ 30,00)
The present
publication offers a
review of Umberto
Boccioni’s works
recollected in an
exhibit at the Art
Museum of Lugano,
on the occasion of
the centenary of the
birth of Futurism.
The exhibit shows for
the first time two important blocks. First, the
works on paper bought by Italy at the sale of the
Winston Malbin Collection and that are now kept
at the National Gallery of Cosenza. And, second,
the 21 pre-futuristic works donated by Chiattone
and now part of the collection of the city of
Lugano. There is also a selection of paintings,
drawings and engravings that come from Italian
and Swiss private and public collections. Such
clearly philological intent aims to illustrate the
main steps in Boccioni’s activity, from pre22
futuristic experiences until full maturity, and to
highlight the specific outcome of the sketches in
which he captured his feelings that are first
steps towards his future works and are essential
to understand them.
Umberto Boccioni (Reggio Calabria, 1882 –
Verona, 1916) is known as one of the major
exponents of the avant-garde movement of
Futurism as well as the artist who most
contributed to its birth and development.

The exhibition
presents a precious
and numerous
nucleus of
miniatures on
parchment donated
to by Count
Giambattista Buri in
1883 to the Museo
civico di Verona. The
exhibition also
studies the aspects of the Renaissance
civilization which are not only expressed in
painting, in sculpture and in architecture, but
also in books. In Verona the art library of the
Renaissance draws upon a very ancient
tradition, which was born in the scriptorium of
the Chapter House of the cathedrals starting
from the early Middle Ages and unfolds over
the entire development of manuscripts. Within
this panorama of great artistic activity we find
the work of the miniaturist and painter
Girolamo Dai Libri, in which knowledge of
Italian art of the Fifteenth Century is married
with precious illuminations and a precision of
details whose roots are set into the refined
Gothic Veronese tradition of Pisanello. The
series of miniatures, the books and painting
are all reproduced in colours and supported by
explanatory notes and the related
bibliographies. The scholarly notes are formed
by a section on restoration of miniatures, a
glossary, the registry of documents
concerning Dai Libri family and the general
bibliography of the artist.

This publication is
the result of
historical research
on photography and
on the consideration
that scholars have of
it, with particular
reference to the socalled “reproduction
photography”, aimed
at reproducing works
of art. In this context, an essential role is
played by Pietro Toesca, one of the key
players of Twentieth Century art who
continuously and studiously used photography,
dedicating a great deal of his thoughts to it.
The volume studies the relationship with this
kind of images and gives us an insight into an
entire moment in Italian art history, with
which Toesca constitutes the bridge between
two generations of art scholars, that formed in
the second half of the 19th Century and that of
the new future scholars Roberto Longhi and
Federico Zeri, with their own various ways of
comprehending the relationship with the
means provided by the photograph..
Giovanni Pietro Toesca (Pietra Ligure, July
1877 – Rome, March 1962), Italian art
historian, was a student of Adolfo Venturi in
Rome. He began his career as professor at the
Accademia scientifico-letteraria of Milan, in
1905, he then taught at the Universities of
Turin. Among his most famous students are
Roberto Longhi and Ernst Kitzinger.

twenty years of team work by the scholars of
the Accademia della Crusca: under the
supervision of Bastiano de’ Rossi, and was
published in 1612 in Venice by the printer
Giovanni Alberti. With its publication a
homogeneous and regulated model of the
Italian language was established based on the
imitation of the great masterpieces of
Florentine literature, especially Dante’s
Commedia, the Canzoniere of Petrarc, and the
Decameron of Boccaccio. The Vocabolario
degli Accademici della Crusca represents a
vital and indispensable passage of Italy’s
linguistic history. The Accademia della
Crusca and ERA Edizioni have reprinted a
prestigious copy of the first “impression” of
1612, published in Venice on the printing
press of Giovanni Alberti. In this way the work
which marked one of the decisive events of
the Italian language, comparable only to the
literary masterpieces of the Fourteenth
Century has been made available to the
public.
