Se si guarda alle due ruote, il nostro territorio ha molto da dire: anche da un
punto di vista economico e imprenditoriale. Colossi mondiali e piccolissime
realtà, grande management e generazioni di artigiani imparentati con l’arte,
motori, ruote, telai, componentistica, il catalogo delle realtà imprenditoriali e
dei prodotti “made in Varese” si impone per varietà e qualità. E questo grazie
al fatto che un tessuto imprenditoriale ampio e diversificato continua ad individuare nel mondo dei cicli e un interessante fronte competitivo.
Ai primi del Novecento risalgono le gesta di Luigi Ganna, grande ciclista che
tagliava traguardi con pesantissime bici. Trofei e applausi alle spalle, il campione iniziò a produrre bici con il marchio Ganna nella sua stessa Varese. Un
marchio di successo, poi rilevato dalla vicentina Giubilato.
Tra le piccole realtà locali che continuano a realizzare qui bici artigianali, la
Pavarin. Una bella storia, quello del suo fondatore: giovane apprendista alla
rinomata “Ganna”, Achille Pavarin diventa presto un tecnico di valore a cui
persino “mister Ignis” fa la corte. Ma una passione resta nel suo cuore: quella
del maestro del lavoro che sogna un’officina tutta sua, capace di realizzare,
pezzo per pezzo, super due ruote da relax e competizione. Ciò che continua ad
accadere, ormai da anni, nell’azienda di Calcinate del Pesce, sotto la guida di
Roberto, figlio del fondatore.
Piccole e vivaci realtà, quelle varesine, che stabiliscono veri e propri record sul
fronte della componentistica. In pole position è la Beretta Cerchi, industria
saronnese tra i maggiori produttori di cerchi in alluminio, acciaio e leghe leggere per biciclette, con un export relativo all’80% del fatturato e circa tre
milioni di pezzi realizzati ogni anno. Buono il successo della varesina Dansi
Italia, leader negli impianti di illuminazione, e competitiva la Andriolo, azienda nata negli anni Quaranta, sede a Venegono Inferiore, che si dedica agli og-

Enterprises and bicycles: the so
called «Varese System» grows
If you think about bicycles, you can
notice that the area of Varese has a
lot to tell, also from an economic
and entrepreneurial point of view.
There are international giants and
very small realities, great management and generations of craftsmen
who are related to art, engines,
wheels, frames and component
productions. The catalogue of the
entrepreneurial realities and products which are «made in Varese»
stands out for its variety and quality. The reason of this success is that
there is a wide and varied entrepreneurial network which continues
to find in the world of cycles an
interesting competition.
It is necessary to mention the
exploits of Luigi Ganna at the beginning of the XX century, a great
cyclist who was the first to cross
the finishing lines with very heavy
bicycles. After several trophies and
applauses, this champion started to
produce bicycles (branded Ganna)
in his own town Varese. This was a
successful brand, then bought by
the company Giubilato of Vicenza.
Nowadays, the company Pavarin is
one of the small local realities
which continue to produce craft
bicycles. The history of its founder
is particularly interesting: he was a
young apprentice who worked by
the famous company Ganna. Soon
Achille Pavanin became a capable
technician and attracted also the
attention of the founder of the
company Ignis. But his real dream
was to have his own shop and to
be a master, able to realize bit by
bit normal bicycles and racing
bicycles. His firm, situated in the
village Calcinate del Pesce and
now directed by his son Roberto,
still produces bicycles.
These small and dynamic realities
of Varese set up pure records in
the component production. The
most important reality is represented by the firm Beretta Cerchi
of Saronno. This is one of the
major producers of rims for bicycles made of aluminium, steal and
light alloys. Its exportation covers
the 80% of its sales and it produces about three millions rims a
year. An other successful firm is
the enterprise Dansi Italia of Varese, which is leader in the lighting systems, while the firm Andriolo, born in the Fourties and
situated in Venegono Inferiore, is
particularly competitive in the
production of objects made of
plastic materials. This latest firm
underlines with pride that it is
going to produce the flasks for the
World Championship of Varese in
2008. It is also necessary to mention the firm Montalbetti, that
was opened in Varese sixty years
ago. Mic (Milan International
Commerce), whose head office is
in Legnano, is an other firm which
boasts several successes in this
field. This firm, led by Amedeo
Colombo, has a story made of
famous brands, like the wellknown gear «Shimano made in
Japan» (Francesco Moser was the
first person who gave his endorsement to this product).
Finally, it is also important to mention the innovative ability of the
firm Mapei, leader in the building
trade. This firm opened in Castellanza a big service centre, which is
addressed to high sportive services.
Daniele Nardello and Stefano Zanini are two of a large number of
athletes of Varese who go in this
important centre. Varese and its
Province represent a point of contact between economy and sport
and between innovation and history, also in the cycling field.

Innumerevoli anche i successi della Mic (Milan International Commerci), oggi
con quartiere generale a Legnano, l’azienda di Amedeo Colombo che vanta
una storia fatta di brand famosi, come il celebre cambio “made in Japan”
Shimano, che ebbe come primo testimonial Francesco Moser.
Grande è la capacità innovativa mostrata infine dalla Mapei, azienda leader per
l’edilizia, che a Castellanza ha fatto sorgere un mega-centro servizi rivolto
all’alta prestazione sportiva e al wellness. Tra i tanti atleti che si affidano al centro d’eccellenza anche gli atleti varesini Daniele Nardello e Stefano Zanini.
Anche su due ruote, dunque, il Varesotto si pone quale punto d’incontro tra
economia e sport, innovazione e storia.
