AGENDA
The GuardEn project
The project, funded by the South East Europe Transnational Cooperation
Programme (S.E.E.), priority axis “protection and improvement of the
environment”, aims at developing an integrated approach of strategies for
the prevention of soil pollution and rehabilitation of harmed territories.
Agriculture and companies involved in the agro-food supply chain often
play an important role in preventing the contamination of natural
resources of the surrounding areas.
The project starts from the assumption that pollution can be faced only
through the development of conscious and voluntary socially responsible
behaviours.
On the basis of the specific tangible challenges connected to its territory
each geographical area involved in the project has suggested a Standard
of virtuous practices to be adopted by local agro-food producers in favour
of water and soil protection. In the Veneto region area four good practices
have been focused as crucial for pollution prevention and some of them
have been analysed in a substantial sample of farms and agro-food
companies; also a mutualistic fund for covering the risks of reduced
income due to the application of one of them has been finalized. The fund
may represent a concrete tool for farms that intend to adopt clean
production practices on a volunteer basis and it constitutes an efficient
alternative solution to the massive utilisation of insecticides.
4 good practices:
Reduced intensity of tillage
Reduced amount of mineral fertilizers
Increased Soil Organic Matter
Integrated Pest Management
