Agnus Dei (from Missa Brevis in A minor) – notes, pronunciation and translation Little is known about the life or the music of the Italian composer, Claudio Casciolini, who was born on November 9, 1697, and died on January 18, 1760. He was the choirmaster (maestro di cappella) of the basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso in Rome in the early 18th century, and upheld the more conservative a cappella choral tradition prevalent in the Roman Church of that time. This Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) is spare, almost minimal in content. The half note pulse remains constant throughout the piece, like a heart-beat. Choral phrases should be sung as an individual melodies, with a slight crescendo at the beginning of each phrase and a slight diminuendo at the end of the phrase. Each new choral entrance should receive a bit of emphasis, with the volume of the other voices not covering/obscuring the new entrances. The breath mark indication ( ) implies a quarter note rest. Pronunciation Guide Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi Miserere nobis Dona Nobis Pacem Ahn-yoos Deh-ee kwee toh-lees peh-kah-tah moon-dee Mee-seh-reh-reh naw-bees. Doh-nah-noh-bees pah-chem. English translation Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Grant us peace.
