Dear Brothers ami Sisters,
The Lord has given us all so many gins. But do wc
use them as eagerly and thoughtfully as wc might? And
so we uso them for the right ends? We live in a vcry
money conscious society, so the questions asked us by
Jesus are very relevant.
The "sensible" use of money will mean very diffcrent
things to a speculator on the Stock Market and to
someone who believes that everything superfluous to

Many marriageS consist of one partner who saves
and the other who spends! Jesus is asking us to look at
our behaviour with money and see whether our
approach is the best. Secondly he is asking us to look at
our behaviour between ourselves as Christians and ask
the question whether we put our full energies into the
pmctice of our beliefs or not. And He asks us to use all
the talents God has given us for that purpose. The
Father asks us to turn to" Him with the difficult decision
of our lives as well as our needs and to be 'more aware
of all the gins He lavishes upon us and enables us to
use them well.

'I am sending you a copy of a few words written by Rabbi Sacks, which I 1'C<1d in a Church bulletin in Salisbury, a
few weeks ago'. I thought it was relevant to this age.
It is a world where, in the words of R.1bbi Sacks:
"Values are tapes we play on the walkman of the mind: any tune we choose, as long as it does not disturb others.
Beyond protjucing and consuming. work and leisure. we find it hard· to say what gives meaning to our lives.
Individualism condemns us to constructing our own morality. But, a private morality is no more possible than a private
language".

RIVISl'A DELLA COMUNITA'ITALJANA
An Australian's St. Peter's
Impressions formed by visitors of
familiar places are invariably revealing: when such views were recorded
and published a century ago they
become doubly so. From an early
date, given the lIlusieal reputation
acquired by SI. Peter's, congregations
were rarely exclusively C.1tholic' or
Italian. The presence of royally provided an additional source of interest
to curiosity-seekers in the summer of
1891 when the Prince of Naples (the
future King Victor Enunanuel I1I) ,on
a visit to England became a regular
atlender at Sunday Mass.
The only son of King Humbert I
and heir apparent to the Italian throne
Victor Emmanuel was making his first
visit to England. The nature of the
1891 visit was private and it provided
the prince wilh the opportunity to
make use of his English, a language
be had studied since childhood. His
education had been of a rigorous
mililary nature, and when he was not
in the e1assroom he had been taken to
sce other countries, notably Switzerland, Germany, Greece, Turkey,
Egypt, ~iilestine and Russia. His studies and travels, up to the age of
twenty,' had been under the watchful
eye of Col. (later General) Egidio
Osio. Now aged twenty-two and frce
of his tutor's allentions, the prince
found his activities were watched by a
curious public' while his comings and
goiugs were observed the reported on
by the press. An Irish-Australian journalist, lames Franeis Hogan, recorded
his impressions of the prince and the
church which formed the basis for an
article which appc.1red subscqucnlly
in the Melbourne C:llholic' wcckly,
"The Advocate".
A ccntury ago newspapcrs still
relied heavily on Ihe printcd word 10
convey their mcssage since illustrations were expcnsive and hence rarely
used. This obliged writers such as
Hogan to compile pen-portraits of
individuals and events and his accounts of St. Peter's in 1891 provides
us with a useful episode in the
church's history. The princc, Hogan
noted, appeared 10 have litlle in
common wilh his forcbears in stature
or manner. Being litlle over five fcct
tall, the diminutivc figure found il
hard to shake ofT the label of "11
Prinieipino". As a boy he had bccn
regarded as delic.1tc wilh his spindly
Icgs and a broad chesl, yet he mlS
possessed of a sound constitution and
-
was rarely ever ill. Hogan was impressed by the apparent courtesy
shown by Ihe prince towards those he
mel. Queen Vieloria entertained the
prince to dinner at Osbome where she
had Ihe opportunity 10 scrutinise him
at close quarters. Later she recorded
in her Journal the fact Ihat the
.,...young Prince, who is in his
twenty-third yc.1r, has a fine hc.1d and
gentle expression but... is drc.1dfully
short. He is wonderful well-informed,
intelligent and amiable,"
Generally, the prince made a good
impression wherever ,he went and this
proved to be only the first of a series
of visits he was to make to Britain.
He returned in 1897 for Qucen Victoria's diamond jubilce celebrations
when he was sc.1ted at the left·hand of
the Queen at the state banquet. (fo
her right S.1l the ill-fated Archduke
Francis Ferdinand of Austria·Hungary). Victor Emmanuel's last visit
was iu 1924 when
accompanied by
Quccn Elena he visited the Empire Exhibition at Wembley.
Any doubts people
may have entertained
that he would ever
become king were
dispelled in 1900
when following the
assassination of his
Ihther he su=ded
to the throue. He
was 10 reign for a
longer period than
any other kiug in Ihe
history of uniled
lIaly.
Hogan weut on to
dcscribe thc church as oue of the
sights of Londou, oue not to be
missed by tourists. Hidden amoug
shops and offices the writer asserted
that oncc inside the visitor would fiud
himself in onc of the most handsome
churches in the world. The internal
decoration impressed him greatly, being on what he considered to be an
elaborate scale and with a wCo111h of
colour on all sides. The ceiling depicting SI. Pcter iu Hc.wen was particularly fine. The wall ovcr Ihe sanctuary
WlIS covcrcd by a paintiug of the
angels and s,1ints in paradise. Othcr
murals depicted Ihe Transfiguration,
the agony in the Gardcn. the Ascension. the 1..1st Supper and various
incidents in the Iivcs of SI. Peter and
J.Dunleavy
SI. Paul. Hogan informed his readers
he was not aware of any chureh in
Australia decorated in such a style.
"No doubt (he speculated) the reason
is 1b.1t Australia is yet too young to
possess an artist of Ihe first rank, and
cndowed with the requisite' Catholic
knowledge" taste and ,sympathies. ,No
doubt when Austraha bccomes.,more
populous and gives greater enci>urngemeut to high art, Catholic painters of
eminence \\ill be gradually atlraeted
to her shores. In the case of the Italian
chureh in London, two famous artists,
Amand and Gauthier were brought
from lIaly at considerable expense to
decorate the interior,'"
The church was also the proud
possessor of what' Hogan termed a
monster bell, one of the three largest
in Eugland; known as "the big bell of
SI. Peter". It Cust £1,000 and was
purchased in 1862. Its dcep, sonorous
boom, Hogan wrote, could be heard
far and wide over
London.
The Advocate
correspondent had a
dcep and abiding interest in music. Having grown up in Mel-,
boume, the capital of
Victoria, he frequently attended
Mass at SI. Fianeis'
church, whieh then
enjoyed and still
does a fine musical
tradition. He considered Ihat the choir at
SI. Peler's justly enjoyed a reputation
for excellence. On
the orders of Cardinal Manning, however, the choir was
restricted to men and boys which
presented difficnlties with some of the
Masses composed for mixed choirs.
Hogan was rCo1dy 10 concede that the
rccmitment of boys had gone part of
the way in helping to overcome this
problem. An organ and orehestra
always accompanied (he ehoir on
Snndays.
lames F. Hogan eompiled an intrigning snapshot view of St. Peter's
in the 1890s when church-going was
still for many people a cenlral fealure
of (hcir Snnday routine. The Advocate
wonld continue to publish his London
Correspondence \lith the by-line •A
Victorian in London' dOI\n 10 the
time of his dc.1th in 1924.

A government commission has Two
begun investigating allegations that
flats belonging to st.1te insurance
funds were improperly allocated to
influential people at rents below market prices. The commission, set up by
labour minister Tiziano Treu, is to
examine whether fund officials
abused their authority in the allocation of flats. By law, a certain
percentage of the 120,000 properties
owned by pension funds must be
rented out to low-income f.1milies.
The others arc allocated 'at the funds'
discretion. But instc.1d of collecting
market rents, prosecutors 5.1id the
funds had rented many of thc flats to
the well connected, including politicians, judges, trade unionists and
journalists, at only a fraction of what
they werc worth. Although not neccs5.1rily illegal, the practice has angered
ordinary Italians hit by a shortage of

I was beginning to think Tony had
some c.1nine blood as he found the
trees oncc more. Geoff was baek on
track as well • on the middle of the
fairway. Tony's third to the green
even earned him a chip but he was in
trouble especially after Geofrs chip to
the green gave him a birdie opportunity. But again the Enfield mans
putter let him down - another hole
gone begging. Hole halved in five. All
square at the half way point.
10th hole. Par 3. 180 yards.
Both tee shots c.1sily clcared the
lake. Tony 40 feet passed the pin to
the back of the green. Geoff 14 feet to
the left of the pin. Tony's magnificcnt
downhill putt finished close ot the
hole and Geoff left his birdie attempt
short Ic.1ving him a testing par putt to
5.1Ve the hole. No problem. Hole
halved. All square.
11th hole. Par 4.
Both landed their tcc shots in the
middle of the fairway, Tony follo\ving
up landing just short of the green.
Geofrs second was unquestionably
his worse shot so far. Lifting his hc.1d
early the ball skimmed along the
ground 20 yards or so behind Tony's.
His recovery shot was an action
replay of the previous ball yet left
him five feet short of the hole. Tony
undershot his third and his fourth
missed by inehes. Yet another, ehance
for Gcoff to take the hole. Again it
went begging. But at least he 'didn't
underhit it this time. It was the left to
right S\ving that c.1ught him out. Hole
halved. All square - stilJl
12th hole. Par 4.
Two hours later we were at the
elub house again teeing off on the
12th. Another shot to Tony. Geoff, his
consistency back, went plumb down
the thirway along with Tony's. Tony's
second was 5.1fe and sensibly short.
"Good shot" 5.1id Martin, Geofrs
caddy for the day, after Geofrs
second shot. I suspect he is too good a
friend to have been 5.1rcastic at such a
critic.11 time, it's just that Geoff put
his shot in the ditch having, together
with his caddy, misrc.1d the eourse
planner, mistaking a pathway for the
ditch some forty yards further down
the fairway. So Tony had two shots
on Geoff. Still; he made a mc.11 but it
was one up to Tony.
13th hole. Par 5
A passing plane was in danger of
Tony's tee sholl What it 'lacked in
distance it made up for in height.
Another perfect tee shot from Geoff if only he could rc.1d the greens as
well. Tony's seeond was a respeetable
hit but he had let Geoff in with a
chanee who hit a perfeet second.
Oltobre 95

"Brilliant" said Tony of his third.
OK, so it .missed the ditch but it was
still short of the green. Geoff was
putting a perfect hole together with
his third to the upper level of the
grecn. Now it was down to his putting
but he probably took heart when he
saw Tony's fourth land in the bunker.
Geoff claimed the hole but only after
three putting. It seems the nerves
were getting to them. All square.
14th hole. Par S.
Gcoff was giving a shot to Tony
on this dog leg right hole. Geoff and
Tony both hit safe tee shots but
Gcoll's second deserved better. Understandable though playing against
two enemies: nerves and giving away
a shot. Tony took his ehance wilh a
perfect second shot Ic.1ving him an
casy third into the heart of the green.
The rest, a formality. One up to Tony.
15th hole. Par 4.
.
Gcoff, although into the' rough on
the right and seemingly blacked out,
put his recovery shot leftside of the
green. Tony meantime hit the perfect
tce shot but followed it up with a poor

second short of the green. Neither was
he Ik1ppy \vith a third that left him
with work to do. Geoff hit a tremendous putt from 30 feet which swung
around the hole before staying out.
Putting like that deserved to win the
hole. His follow up did. All square.
16th hole. Par 4
.The final hole where Geoff was
conceding a shot. Like the last one
Geoff tried too hard, pulling his
normally reliable tee shot into the
brook. Tony seized his chance wilh
good shot off the lee. The rest was a
formality. One up to Tony.

couldn't see him actually shaking but

18th hole. Par 4.
A tree slightly obscured the view
of this dog leg right. What tree? Both
shots going straight over it to land
just feet of each other. Gcoff to play
first, only just and only just into the
grcenside bunker· the one shot he did
not want. The lie of the ball near the
cusp of the lip only added to his
problems. All Tony had to do was
stay calm. Easy to say whilst tapping
these words into the computer with a
drink nearby. Tony's reaction to his
second shot was a four XXXX - and
nOlhing to do with Castlemaine! Geoil's bunker shot was the one we all
wince at and little that anyone can do
about - it hit the lip and came straight
back at him. His next was a nicely
placed chip to the hole. Meanwhile
Tony had reached the green in three.
Tony to putt from fifty feet-'a good
putt but still some life Icft in it.
Here we were• on the 18th, all
square, four shots each and Peter
Ciccone was measuring to see who
would putt first! I was glad I didn't
play golf. It was all a matter of
concentration, luck and nelVl:S. The
conversation had.stopPed a cOuple of
holes ago and now all we could do
was look on as Gcoff just missed his
five foot putt. So Tony, just a .matter
of inches closer had a putt to \vin. If
he missed then there were the playoffs. It was certainly Ryder Cup stuff.
Gcoff had never got to grips with the
greens and Tony was wayward on the
fairways but it was quite reasonable
that bolh did not play to their best.
How could things have been closer
with no-one holding more tban a shot
1C<1d and for no longer than one hole.
I think even the ball was nervous for
it seemed to hesitate before, almost
rcleetanlly, easing itself over the lip
of the hole to give Tony victory.
The embrace belween Tony and
Geoff at the end was of mulual relief.
I am nOI sure eilher enjoyed the game
as wc spectators did, they were just
plC<1sed it was over. "I am never
putting myself through this again"
was ~ony's reaction.
Pcler Ciecone has promised a
tournament next YC<1r wilh even more
coillestanls. That must be good for the
golrers and certainly for the charities
benefitting from the event. Well done
Peter. Congratulations Gcoff and
Tony.
