Size It has an area of 212 km ². It stretches 65 km long and is 5 km wide. Ithas a depth of 372 m. The lake is 193 meters above sea level. The volume of water is 37 km ³. The Borromean islands « Isola Madre » : The largest of the Borromean islands There is a botanic garden with a palace. How to go to the islands By boat : The islands can be reached from Stresa, Arona, Pallanza, Locarno, Laveno ... with the boats of the "Navigazione Lago Maggiore". Situated in the middle of the gulf, with a magnificent palace of the Renaissance as well as one of the oldest gardens of Italy, the island is famous for its tranquility. The famous French poet Gustave Flaubert said in 1845: " Isola Madre, heaven on Earth. Trees with gold leaves that the sun gilded” « Isola Bella » “Isola Bella” was known as “Isola di sotto inferiore” or isolated island until 1632. There was then a small fishing village. That year, the Count “Charles Borromeo III” (“Carlo III Borromeo”) began the construction of a palace in honor of his wife “Isabella d'Adda”. The work, interrupted by a plague, was completed at around 1652 by the son of “Charles”. The terraced gardens were only opened in 1671. Over the following centuries, the “Borromeo” family made it a center of worldly importance. « Isola Bella » : The great baroque palace The great baroque palace is a museum containing unique pieces of inestimable value: the original furnishings, paintings and frescoes of the 16th-19th centuries, Flemish tapestries of silk embroidered with gold, sculptures, weapons old. The halls of the palace are also impressive, with such a ballroom, a throne room, an armory, or the “Salon Napoleon” (the latter probably stayed on several occasions). « Isola Bella » : The palace The Palace, built in the 16th century, was renovated by the Princess of Borromeo in 1978 and since then home to antique furniture from various family residences. It has also been converted into a museum and you can see replicas of homes averages, many collections delivered, tapestries and porcelain, a puppet theater, an art gallery bringing together old masters and 17th century Lombardy Finally, a doll museum, bringing together French and German parts of the 19th century. It is 13.5kms/ eight miles long and surrounded by mountains covered in lush vegetation. The setting alone is breathtaking but the jewel in the crown is the island of “San Giulio” in the middle of Lake Orta and dominated by its thirteenth century basilica and convent .
